we headed out to the boat ramp about three in the morning loaded down with fuel ice and bait getting
ready for a 200 mile round trip adventure fishing in waters and the gulf ranging from 600 to 1500
feet deep heading out with my buddy pompano brock and his two friends from out of town
brandon and bubba this trip had lots of ups and downs but the ending made it one of the
best fishing trips of my life so let's go what's our speed at now brandon 6.3 okay perfect so after
an almost two hour ride out we finally reached the blue water and got ready to get some baits
in the water mahi candy baby or wahoo candy this is what we call the blue water though
hold it up there we go perfect so it didn't take long for two rods to get hit
i'll let you boys work i guess like here you got it
no go ahead bud go ahead
so the first fish got off but the second one was still on
he's right there
so we were getting the other lines cleared so we could land this fish cleanly
all right hold on brandon
what a gaff don't get hurt
is that your first mahi i think we got a little one first good one of any size yeah
all right hit the ballyhoo we had two on there but one of them pulled off but i think that the
one we landed is the bigger one yeah all right guys that was the blue wing carbon fiber gaff
we nailed that sucker with see i like it too it's not gonna spin around did you notice that
it's got a gimbal butt so you can put it in the rod holder it won't spin
solid carbon fiber you're not gonna break it
so the trolling bite just wasn't happening after about an hour
so we decided to go drop some jigs and throw some lures around the fads
oh one two baby let's go nice oh yeah
so the action picked back up when the school of mahi swam by
oh
there we go
hey what's up brock will you reel mine up my slow pitch yes sir
there's another good one right
yeah
so we were trying to hook one and get it up closer to the boat and hold it there
so the other mahi will follow it in and everybody can pitch a bait and hook up there we go
i'll get this
outrigger
that's uh
yeah we got me i brought my rod just now on that outrigger
so as long as this school stayed around the boat we were going to keep fishing for him
there we go
there you go i'll stay out of the trolling motor might be able to flip this guy
oh here's this guy oh there we go
so we got tired of catching the mahi and decided to move on
we went out to some deeper grounds where we could target some swordfish
all right moved on from the fad now we're
at uh some swordfish grounds we're gonna try our luck there see what happens
about how deep you think it is here 1500 foot
so we were using my chaos fishing custom bent butt rod with an okuma makara 50 wide put it up here
yeah we'll put one a little bit about that
so this is my first time ever sword fishing and it's a very technical type of fishing
everything has to be just right and there's a lot of things you do with
sword fishing that you don't do in other kinds of fishing
you use what's called a sacrificial weight that's used to get your bait down to the bottom quickly
but then as soon as your bait hits the bottom the weight should fall off of the hook
and you can see the little lights that we have on the line that's because it's so dark down
there there's no light and that gives the swordfish something to see another light
so you just use a rubber band to attach it to the fishing line so as you're reeling up
you can just grab the light and pop it right off the line and keep reeling
it's so dark you ever seen those david attenborough documentaries on you gotta take
it off whenever the swordfish comes up we get one we gotta get the lead off yeah that's one of the
hardest parts of the fight after we take the lead off that's when the fight begins we might not even
know if we have one until uh until uh we get the weight off because we might swim up with it and
as soon as you get the weight off you might dive back down put that through there
ah yeah all right and then all you gotta do is pull it off that's the weight that
stays with the bait the whole time and then you just unclip it as you're reeling up
you want to bend it yeah so it's not as much yeah just be nice and easy with it
there we go all right oh line isn't scoping too much
it takes a long time to hit bottom in 1500 feet of water
all right on bottom
you want to be certain that the sacrificial weight comes off once you hit bottom
all right crank it up fast like for about 20 seconds
yeah i think it came off
yeah all right so we don't let it sit on bottom no uh-oh you want it up 200 foot keep reeling
you want it up 200 feet so now you just wait you keep a close eye on the rod tip because
it's going to be a very subtle bite oh it just pulled line out was it loose
it just got jerked oh told you did you say that yeah they did it twice
i'm not sure if we had a small sword on or not we decided to reel up and check the bait
now it isn't on there or is it yeah yeah it is fortunately the sacrificial weight
didn't drop off but we got a big surprise when we took a closer look at it
hit our it skewered that it did bill went all the way through it yeah oh my god look let's
make one more drift yeah let's do it let's make one more drift come on let's do it the swordfish
had actually skewered all the way through that can filled with lead so after about another hour
and a half of sword fishing without a bite we decided to move on and go try and drop for some
tile fish but we weren't going to waste our time getting to the spot so we put out some trolling
whenever you reel the bait back up uh look the same the same oh we just got hit
you want that one reeled up yeah yeah
yeah there you go no you're good don't take it out of here you good
that's the rear oh yeah get ready to reel
no yeah it's not letting me pull all right slow down
i see him on top that might be on wahoo right there yeah really see how he's shaking his head
wahoo was one of our targeted species for this trip so we were getting excited
we're good we're good
it's not a mahi
but the good thing was the barracuda self-released after almost biting brock
oh that's perfect perfect there we are
all right guys we just pulled up to a tile fish spot it's about a thousand feet deep here and uh
unfortunately i'm gonna hand crank it i was using a triple hook rig with whole squid with a two
pound weight dropping it all the way to the bottom and letting it sit
there we go
got one yeah got him
again it takes a long time to reel up from a thousand feet down
yeah all right finally got a hook up
now in 15 minutes i'll be back when i'm done reeling
not bad it's not a lot of weight on it so
not a monster but i'll take it
not a monster by any means but it was my first tile fish so i'll take it
okay i'm reeling up i think i got a small one on
yeah that's definitely a fish oh hell saddle up
sounds yeah good he just nicked my nicked me and i feel it already
yeah all right damn that's a weird little guy
i don't know what that is brock that doesn't look like a scorpion if you know what this is
leave a comment below now while i was over there slaving away with the hand crank they
were using the electric reel yeah there's gotta be a tile with that big head shake
oh yeah that's a nice one look at the blue on that
wow man wow yeah nice
all right guys we're at the last spot uh this is a good grouper spot we're gonna drop some
ballyhoo and squid and hopefully we can end the day on a high note come on big grouper
on bottom we're in only 650 feet of water here but reeling up a grouper is going to be a lot
different from a tile fish i wasn't even paying attention oh yeah that's a good fish
hell yeah all right guys first drop something good oh there we go oh yeah
good fish i've lost a lot of big fish deep dropping before so i was really nervous about
keeping this one on the hook this is a little different from the tile fish yeah yeah dude
this is a big fish
come on stay buckled oh yeah oh yeah oh my god
no way
oh my god
glad i didn't hook that guy on the slow pitch i was literally blown away i'd never seen a
yellow edge grouper this big before here let me drop one more time before we get a pick
you get it this time i put a ballyhoo on with the squid
and oh man am i glad that i decided to drop right away before taking picks
while my bait was dropping we got a few picks
yeah i'm getting hit i couldn't believe it but back to back drops i hooked giant fish
oh i got him up off the bottom this may be the same size yeah holy crap oh now he's fighting over
it's floating up now no way i could have got these on my slow pitch
oh double oh no that's just air bubbles
oh it's another stud dude yeah damn dude what was that oh my god that's his air bubble coming up
way to go yeah
turn the light on that affloyed lot there you go right there yep
look at that guys second giant yellow edge holy cow
what a day guys look at that sunset back behind me what a way to end it off two giant yellow
edge grouper back to back hand cranked and 650 feet of water i'm beat i'm gonna go home go to bed
