We are back with another episode of Beers in the Shed and this one is a cracker. I reckon it's
going to ring home for a lot of you guys. Have you ever bought or sold a four-wheel drive and
regretted it? Do you love the one you're with or maybe it's time to upgrade or maybe you're
holding on to an absolute gem that's going to be worth a stack more money down the track?
I'd really have to get a great deal before I try and sell something like that to get into an
unknown. It is a false economy in the sense that you're not doing it to save money. If I want to
do more touring that vehicle is not going to cut it. So you know the best thing I could have done
was you know getting that 60 series which was next size up. It's a good topic like you said
Jocko and I think the folks are going to love it mate. Why don't you start first Jock? Have you ever
regretted selling a four-wheel drive? I don't think you've sold any. Well first things first
dude I'm just going to crack a cold forex here mate. Hang on. There we go we're on. Now I am
probably an outlier because I still drive my first car. It's my daily driver still but I've definitely
bought and sold plenty of four-wheel drives over the years for fun. You know doing these trips and
things and there's been a few there that I've regretted. The Parenti as you know like that
that thing I love so much. Yeah. And we sold it for a good cause so I'm grateful of why it went
and the money we got for it and raising the money for young veterans and that's awesome.
But I loved that vehicle so much. I was actually real sad to see it go. So that's probably the
only vehicle in probably 10 years of doing this now mate that I actually regret. The rest
the rest I wasn't too bothered by. Yeah no fair enough mate. I think a lot of people watching
this are at a bit of a crossroads as well because they might have you know their old faithful
vehicle that's getting a little bit old in the tooth right now and they're thinking you know
maybe it's the year I upgrade. Maybe it's the year prices are coming down the second-hand market as
a lot of people have seen. They're thinking do I sell my old trusty and go with something you know
untested something new and try and upgrade a little bit or do I stick with what I got? And we'll get
into a lot of that later. For myself mate I've bought and sold quite a few rigs over my years
and I think there's a couple that I've probably regretted selling way back in the day. I had a
beautiful one HDT single owner vehicle low kilometers. It was neat as a button mate and
I remember that one it was pristine wasn't it? Absolutely mint and it's just a really really
gorgeous example of an 80 series and I sort of wish I still had that one but like a lot of people
mate I wasn't in a position where I could just keep it and buy another four-wheel drive. I needed
to sell that to get into the next one so at the end of the day I sort of had to sell it but yeah
I've owned a couple of good ones. Yeah for sure definitely mate. I guess the question then becomes
well if you've got a vehicle that you really like when is the point where you decide it's time to
move on or keep it? What do you have to balance there to determine it? For me there's like a
couple of factors obviously financially that is the big one like if you really want to keep your
dream vehicle but it's just costing you so so much money that can be hard particularly in
mechanical repairs and things like that and the other one being if there's a lot of say rust in
the body if it's just not safe anymore so financial reasons rust in the body or structural safety
and then the third one I would say is if the vehicle just isn't suited to what you want to
do anymore like they're probably the three things I would say maybe it's time to move on but at the
same time if it's it's so hard because it's it's hard to part with your dream car but what about
you mate where does someone determine oh you know I don't want to keep this car I want to get
something better and is that the right call how do you decide that you reckon? Your three points I
think are very very valid mate let's look at say you've got an older vehicle yeah they call it a
30 year old vehicle you are going to be doing maintenance to keep it on the road but you're
also going to be doing a lot of maintenance on a 10 year old vehicle right because I'll tell
you a couple of horror stories and chances are you guys will have a few mates as well
that have been through the exact same thing I had a mate who bought a Ford Ranger exactly the same
scenario got out of a very reliable vehicle yes it was costing him every week to keep this thing
on the road like every four-wheel drive does he thought he'd go for about a sort of a 10 year old
Ford Ranger that had locays on it seemingly compared to his old Land Cruiser
in the first six months he had to replace the transmission that was worth seven thousand
dollars there was a mechanical issue with the motor which was it was to do with the tuning
and one of the sensors again that was another four thousand dollars he ended up spending
so he's over ten thousand dollars in maintenance for this vehicle that was supposed to cost him
nothing and to keep on the road compared to his old Land Cruiser it was a very much a false economy
in that sense so the maintenance didn't go away even though he got a newer vehicle yeah it's it's
a crazy one isn't it because on one hand you think oh if I get into a newer vehicle I'm going to have
less like ongoing running costs like replacing parts but at the same time you're forking out
much more money in the first place and then if it does give you dramas you're even more in the hole
and you just keep digging like like where do you where do you stop so um and I guess the other
thing too is you've got to you know keep in mind these older vehicles as well they're doing
say half a million k's and it's not just you know the alternators and starter motors and things that
are doing four hundred thousand k's it's the the springs on the pedals it's the wiring behind the
dash it's the bolts that hold the um you know all these little bits and pieces everything in that
car has done half a million k's so it's something you need to factor in but at the same time is it
cheaper to keep that thing going than it is to fork out new money like in my position mate I
can't afford to go buy a brand new car right now and I keep my Hilux on the road that is not a
practical daily driver by any sense of the word and I or by the term but um last year I had to
replace the entire engine harness and body harness because I had a earth fail and it arced out
through the wiring loom and um like obviously a very freak thing to happen but it was you know
another maintenance thing that I didn't expect to happen replacing all the wiring in the car
I did it because it was like the I got a new loom for 150 bucks and did it myself sort of thing not
everyone can do that like if if you can't you know work on cars yourself and things like that but
for me I'm at the stage now with that car where it's not that practical but to keep it on the
road because I do all the maintenance myself it doesn't cost me a lot of money to just keep it
going there's no point buying a new car yeah and I think that's you made a great point mate look at
the car you've got now is it completely tired and have you got big rust holes are you just pushing
the proverbial uphill or is this vehicle quite tidy and you're just doing maintenance to keep
it on the road now if it's a very tidy vehicle and it's something like an 80 series 100 series
a gu a gq or you know something that's quite sought after that's going to really retain its
value and if it's as long as it's being well looked after and neat um and all like your engine
your gearbox even even those things are quite easily replaced compared to some of your newer
cars I would say that I'd really have to get a great deal before I try and sell something like
that to get into an unknown um that whole that whole false economy of you know selling a good
reliable wagon or ute and and getting to something newer is a false economy in the sense that you
you're not doing it to save money you can do it to get something newer and that might be a bit more
comfortable but you will not be saving money in the long run chances are the cost to get into it
you're going to be out of pocket and the unknown vehicle someone got rid of that vehicle keep in
mind if it's second hand so chances are you know they might need a bit of maintenance to keep that
thing going so it's going to cost you a heck of a lot of money don't get into a new vehicle for
the wrong reasons thinking you're going to save in the long run because that in my opinion is simply
not true but I suppose the third one that we touched on before which I reckon for you and
I is is very true for how much we use these vehicles off-road and a lot of people watching
as well as if it's not suited to what you're doing anymore like um if you start out frothing on hard
wheeling and you've got this built-up vehicle on 35s twin locks reduction gears all this sort of
stuff and since then you've had a family and you want to go take the camp trail away on the weekends
that's probably not the most practical vehicle to take anymore sort of thing that's a big one jock
because I remember as a young bloke I came to this exact same um point of in my four-wheel drive
career where I had a Suzuki Sierra and I wanted to do harder tracks and I wanted to go away touring
and stuff so I started pouring money into this thing to make it better off-road and at the end
of the day it was still a Suzuki Sierra I couldn't fit more than a backpack and maybe a swag in the
back of that vehicle so no matter what I did um if I want to do more touring that vehicle was not
going to cut it so you know the best thing I could have done was you know getting that 60 series which
which was next size up in terms of size it was way better tourer and allow me to fit bigger tires a
lot easier so I could do tougher tracks um again so it was a good compromise for me into the old 60
if I want to do really hard tracks it probably would have been better getting something like an
80 series or a patrol like a live axle vehicle again a lot more capable out of the box that means
less money need to spend on modifications to get the sort of outcome you're after well with that
in mind mate what about some vehicles that a lot of people at home watching right now probably have
one in their driveway and if they have this particular vehicle should you hold on to it
what do you reckon some prime examples of that would be assuming these vehicles are in good
condition um in terms of the chassis the body the wiring all that sort of jazz um I think I think
all your large live axle vehicles will be worth holding on to because they're simply not making
these anymore and um you're never going to get a vehicle out of the box that will be as capable
and as tough as your 80 series your 105s uh your gu's and your gq's I have two one of them is uh
the sort of mid 90s ln106 hiluxes in standard form like not a lot of them have been modified by
people like me um and you know like it's a lot of first four drives for young people but if you find
a stock ln106 that doesn't have any rust hold on to it for as long as you can um they are getting
very hard to find without being touched um and some people are even importing them over from
japan in in stock form and stuff or different variants thereof um that I reckon if you had a
stock one of them that would be really cool to to get on the road and the good thing is because
they're so slow you won't want to drive it that much anyway so yeah that's it's absolutely fair
mate um I'll probably add to what I said about the gu's gq's 80s the 105s um even your 100 series
look in particular at the engine and uh the engine combos that you're having these vehicles that's
what's going to be worth money down the track now so you're sought after torquey little diesels like
your 1hd fts your ftes um your td40 tools twos especially those intercooled ones made in the
ti's and stuff like that those things are going to hold their money something shocking so in the
next sort of 10 years you're not going to lose any money on that vehicle in fact you'll probably
make money I'm not going to say it's going to be like a classic old muscle car but the simple
fact is they're not making a lot of these vehicles anymore anything that's sort of equivalent to that
so they're going to be worth a lot as there's not many left a lot will be rusted running to
the ground overly modified and those examples out there that are still relatively stock and clean
are going to command an absolute premium agree mate agree so if you've got one of those vehicles
let us know if you've got an absolute peach of a four-wheel drive that you're really proud of
that you want to hold on to let us know in the comments below what it is well guys it's pretty
timely in that easter holidays are just around the corner if you're looking for a campsite I
think you're going to be getting away in your four-wheel drive there is one must-have app you
need on your phone because trust me when I say this you'll find the best campsites in this country
I've thought of course about the wiki camps app now a lot of you guys might have used it before
but trust me when I say this it's all brand new it's been completely redesigned it's got a whole
new look and um heaps of really new features now we used this just the other day jocko you and
myself were down uh where were we in like mid north coast of new south wales yeah mate it's
pretty crazy an area we've been to heaps before and we found a new campsite that was spectacular
I didn't even know it was there exactly right we got in um late one day we thought we need a
campsite we found this beautiful one right on the river in fact I even caught a flathead right near
camp and um the best thing was we had it all to ourselves so guys if you're thinking about getting
away and you might have left your run a little bit too late to book the perfect campsite don't
stress jump on wiki camps and um trust me when I say they've got campsites right around australia
from paid campsites free campsites by going to detail there's usually photos good descriptions
and even user feedback as well so it is the number one app to have I reckon leading up to easter to
find the perfect campsite yeah big time mate with easter coming up that is the time to get yourself
away and get yourself on the app check out some cracking campsites and then go camping after that
this exact vehicle could be yours you see marta cars for cancer and giving you the chance to win

at marta so make sure you get your tickets in before may 13 unless of course it does sell out
sooner that's just how popular these lotteries really are so the best way to get your tickets
is go to carsforcancer.com.au and good luck we put the question out there um on instagram have
you ever bought a four-wheel drive and regretted it now these people have sold the four-wheel drive
and regretted it now check this out branded had a short wheelbase pajero a little 2.8 litre turbo
diesel and regrets it every single day selling that thing they're a cool little car yeah they
are really cool really cool now this one caught my eye too mate noah's landy he bought a defender
sight unseen from wa was sold only had one small rust hole but found extensive rust that is not
what you want it's always a risk with sight unseen stuff and i imagine being a defender he probably
paid some decent coin for it that's a bummer yeah and i think a lot of people think they don't rust
as well because they've got a lot of aluminium on them but but um yeah it's a bit of a shame if
they're all rusted out that's no good what about um old rexy spencer um his dad used to have a hj47
just like the old farm truck and um he sold it again still talks about it every single day i know
every single person's ever sold a 40 series mate regrets it especially they probably got rid of it
i got one here mate from talia rundle so she had a 2014 ford ranger got it on her p's you know had
a stono snorkel and stuff she's even said that it sounded like a pigeon was stuck in it so it
probably did this and she accelerated but um had to sell it unfortunately and was very upset but
then a little while later found it in a small town in uh in victoria and uh still saw it still going
so i guess it's nice obviously it sucks that she had to sell it for those reasons that she did but
at least seeing that it's still running and still being looked after would be a nice uh
a nice way to remind yourself of all the good times you had in it yeah absolutely mate here's
another story that's come in from jayden um actually bought a 2011 hylux mate it's
it's a bloke after your own um taste anyway bone stock low kilometers um even had fresh paint so
you can imagine the thing looked absolutely mint but you know that's where i guess it looked
absolutely mint on the surface but underneath wasn't as good you know a few weeks later after
he bought it the paint started to flake off it obviously they've done a bit of a bodgy job on it
um the whole chassis was rusted underneath and you know he had always huge aspiration of doing
up but unfortunately it was completely buggered so he had to sell it for way less than he bought
it and i'm completely lost on that i think he's never got stories like that mate buying something
especially sight unseen and you think it looks good and then um then you start to learn the
real gremlins behind it yeah you're not wrong mate and do a revs check i can't suggest that
enough mate a lot of people will try and skimp on the 30 bucks to do a revs check um someone i know
i won't mention any names but he's my brother mitch um bought a toyota he bought a toyota
hylux as well he just reminded me it was like about a um it was one of those n70s a single cab
and it was a um repaired right off so yeah right yeah yeah he didn't know about that until it was
a bit too late and um luckily got rid of that vehicle before he put too much time and effort
into it but yeah it had heaps of water damage and it was very evident after he got it he got
it at a great price as you usually do with those sort of vehicles i think this is too good to be
true and it was it really was well what about you guys at home have you ever bought or sold
a four-wheel drive or maybe even you've kept one and then ended up regretting it let us know in
the comments below really keen to hear about it i'm sure mate there would be lots of stories
of people who've regretted selling their dream vehicle or they've bought one that they are
they're really regretting as well so let us know well mate next up is my favorite section because
it means i can scour graze.com for some crack and buys of course it is the graze top buys of the
week we've got some awesome ones here mate and straight into it off the bat i've got this uh
jeep jk wrangler now currently up for just over five grand it's only done 97 000 ks and after
wheeling a jk in the states these things are so capable the fact you could get one in for that
price or depending on what it goes for at the end of the auction this would be an awesome buy i reckon
and being a short wheelbase obviously a little bit different driving off road but i've always
wanted a jeep and i keep looking at graze.com for them and this one popped up i thought you beauty
and then moving on mate i've got another one here this is a 2008 gu three liter now currently
just over six grand it hasn't met the reserve but it's got 170 000 ks and particularly because
we're just talking about how much these du's might be worth in a little bit of time this might be a
cracker of a buy to get for a steal and then hold on to of course it is the three liter so a few
things to keep an eye out for with those engines but if you can get it for cheap i reckon you get
into one of the best four drives ever made for not that much money not a bad buy at all mate
a couple good picks there jocko i was uh scaring around on graze as well mate i found these ones i
wish to share uh this one here's a 2017 ford ranger now what's cool about this one it's just
a no-nonsense dual cab u it's also got the manual transmission not the auto which is known to have
a few problems i've got a very very low um reserve on it at the moment so i think that'll go up and
there's no doubt about it but keep your eye on that one because i reckon someone's going to get
as well so that could be great value for someone looking for like a tradie ute or something like
that um stepping up the notch a little bit in utes mate check this one out it's a vdj 79 series
single cab ute so this one's got no reserve there's quite a few people looking at it but again
it's got only 60 000k so it's practically brand new for a 2020 model um you could get yourself a
bargain on a v8 79 series and um like we're looking at at vehicles that are going to hold
their value for years to come um these 79s mate especially a low kilometer one like this and a
late model um 2020 i think um would be worth its weight in gold especially with a v8 in it mate
jocko one of my favorite parts of beers in the shed where we get to go into your sheds to see
some of the cool things you guys have been up to from your mad fails to your rigs and to make
things even better we have a couple of really cool prizes to give away what do you reckon jock
mate i love this part of the shed it's always cool seeing what people have been up to
let's get into it hey i want to start with one mate let's talk about fails because i love fails
they make me smile because i've done so many myself i reckon but this one here is monumental
this is monumental in so many ways now it shows just how quick everything can go wrong now starting
off um doing a water crossing and the first clip you see it's all pretty straightforward it gets a
little bit deep and the next minute where things go completely pear-shaped and your fridge is
floating down the river and you can completely submerge underneath now the thing i want to point
out everyone was safe thank goodness um but that's his car at the end the whole thing's
underwater the whole thing is underwater mate it's it's all completely under like we're talking
about a submarine that really is it and the good thing is everyone is safe but it's a pretty timely
reminder how quick things can go wrong mate that's crazy that is not what you want mate i originally
thought that was just his fridge floating down the river i've done that before in cape york but
that's the whole vehicle that is a bugger all vehicle well mate i've got a bit of a rig here
and i reckon you're going to love this one it is of course an old zuki in cape york now it's
jackie and duane murphy's son's four-wheel drive they call it the buzzard and it's doing what looks
like a frenchman's track mate and it is getting after it looks like it's done there's it across
i think as well by the looks of it mate that is insane for a first time take it up there epic
epic yeah exactly right goes to show it doesn't matter what you drive mate you can go do epic
trips like that i really love it little suzuki vitara you don't see heaps of those in fact the
suzuki vitara just like was jesse's first four-wheel drive it was yeah as my first four-wheel drive i
reckon there's something about us suzuki drivers mate when you start up an azuk it prepares you
better things to come mate that's for sure um let's jump into this one this one is being shared
via instagram now simone's young one um has actually put together a little bit of a lego
scenario based on a cape york trip i did with sammy back in the day it was a fishing trip now
check this out it's got the boat on the trailer got old sooty there as well even to the point
where there's not much food in the little food crates mate because we used all our food or
got our food so it's been made by young lincoln and harvey so guys that is fantastic i love seeing
i love the fact you've ever taken them outside and um really set the scenario up but that's
awesome you can tell you can tell he's modeled it after sammy because that little sammy figure's got
no fish he hasn't caught any so exactly right mate exactly right so well done well done lincoln and
harvey um yeah and kids make sure if you if you are making some cool lego things out there let
your parents know so they can get in touch with us i love seeing when the when the kids put a lot
of effort in mate it's really cool to see right we need to pick up jocko the best rig or a fail
to give a 4x merch pack to now these 4x merch packs are pretty cool um what do you reckon mate
the fail or the rig i've got something in mind what are you what are you thinking it's a tough
one mate it's a tough one because i just reckon you can't go past taking a little old zook to
cape york and the fact that that's um jackie and duane's son's first four wheel drive that's pretty
epic that earns a 4x merch pack in my opinion mate yeah absolutely i'm gonna give it to the buzzard
mate give it to the buzzard yeah mate the buzzard is getting a 4x merch pack that is epic and plenty
more adventures to come in that mighty little zook mate if it's been to cape york it'll go anywhere
so of course if you guys want to enter uh your lego creations or you've got a rig or a fail that
you want to share the best way to get it through is use the hashtag four drive 24 7 fails four drive
24 7 rigs and four drive 24 7 kids on instagram tiktok or you can share it on our official
facebook group mate that's the best way to get in you could get a 4x merch pack just like
jackie and duane's son and the buzzard have now yeah absolutely mate that's a lot of people do
ask how do you get your stuff on visa shed that is the way to do it guys now jocko i want to share
something um that's um of high importance mate i think we're gonna have to wrap this one up
my 4x gold is getting dangerously empty in fact it's fully empty and that's probably all we've
got time for today anyway i just want to thank you guys for tuning in of course and um what i
want to do is just put it out there mate a lot of you guys um probably obviously following us on
