When I set out on this off road motorcycle riding adventure, I had one goal: find as many epic, sweeping views of the Willamette National Forest as I could. This dual sport riding journey on my Honda CRF250L took me up abandoned logging roads, past landslides, around the Forest Service's attempts to block off roads by digging enormous trenches, and finally to a series of epic views while exploring deep in the forest. Dual sport forest riding is one of my favorite things, and this solo motorcycle adventure to the mountains nearby was a blast. I also stumbled across several potential dispersed motorcycle camping spots that I hopefully will get to return to in the future. I hope that future off road motorcycle exploring trips prove as fruitful and amazing as this one. Please enjoy the ride!
Hello everyone, welcome back to the dork side. It is I, your friendly neighborhood,
dork in my truck, driving up to the woods because we're going to go
ride some logging roads and find some beautiful views today
up Canyon Creek on the dual sport motorcycle.
That's right everyone, I am the dork in the road and I want to be your internet
riding buddy and I'm better than your regular riding buddies because I'm
available whenever you want and I come with a mute button so please
don't forget to hit that subscribe button and click that notification bell
so you know when I post new content just like this.
It's a beautiful mild July day and we are headed out.
We're driving up the highway, this is highway 20. We gotta go up
a few miles here, 10-20 miles until we get to the place where we'll stop and
unload the bike and hit the forest roads like a boss. Same place I brought
little dork if you saw the kids first forest adventure video
but I've been doing a little google map investigating and
marked a couple spots I want to check out to see if there's some good high
bluffs we can get up and see some decent stuff. So
that's we're going to check out today and either way we get a fun day of
forest riding so it's fantastic. So I just want to say thank you very
much for coming along. I hope you enjoy the video.
All right here we are coming up on the spot
Canyon Creek, see the sign that's it we're crossing
we're turning here. Conveniently there's a great place to park right here at the
bottom. Hopefully they're not logging up here
today. Really relish the idea of dodging
logging trucks all day but whatever I've done worse. I'm agile,
nimble and narrow on the CRF. So there is a kind of cool thing
back here right at the entrance that we go we look at almost every time
we come out here but I've never actually put it in the video
A little bit hard to get to because it's kind of overgrown back here right now
but there's an old fireplace and chimney back here
which I assume dates back to Sanam wagon road days.
This is right here on the creek and it's right on the old wagon road
that went from Sweet Home to Sisters in Bend so
my guess is it was either a house or some sort of
stopping point way station w-a-y not w-e-i-g-h
along the route somebody's home I don't know it's pretty cool though
stumbled across this wall come back here to take a pee one day
pretty awesome it's right by the highway highways over there but
I think it's bomb don't see that every day
really really don't all right let's get this bike unloaded get some riding
done
all right well back in the woods I'm gonna go a little faster this time
because Lil Dork isn't here she's doing good but I do wish she was
a little less timid on the throttle we're gonna go find our spot it's a
ways up though so thanks for coming along hope the mic
sounds okay I did it was okay on my test ride but I'm
going a little faster right now so I don't know for sure there's that cool
tree again sketchy glad I wasn't here when that thing
fell it's pretty it's very pretty
I see dust oh there's a rig coming that's not a log truck it's a dump truck
howdy
it's a water truck hope there's no fire up here
that's the second rig I've seen on this road I never see rigs on this road
if you're curious about the crf if you saw the moto camping video where I
talked about having electrical problems you're wondering why I'm riding it now
in the woods I figured out the issue it was something
that I thought I had eliminated but after going around not being
able to figure out what it was I checked it again
and it was my usb charger which you'll notice is no longer attached to the bike
that got shorted out because it got wet in the rain when I was riding up at
McCoy and I plugged it in or I hooked it back
up to the battery and the battery went down a significant amount in a very short
time and I touched the thing and it was too hot to even touch
so there's definitely some sort of short in there it was draining the battery so
I pulled it off and it's been fine since I've ordered a
new one and I'm going to put that on I might even do a video of it but the new
one has a switch so I can turn it off when I'm not using
it so it won't drain the battery which is a good thing there's our
waterfall it's not even a waterfall it's
trickle right now look at that nothing that's that raging
waterfall that duck fan hit under that time in the other video up here
no snow running off right now it's all melted summertime
well it's not too hot which is good it's been a very mild July
which I like I don't like it when it's super hot
I haven't had many days over 90 but it's mostly been
high 70s low 80s which is real good I have a feeling August is gonna suck
not looking forward to that but at least it's cooler up here always
I hope the stabilization doesn't look too funky so if you didn't see the other
video where I talked about it I upgraded to a GoPro Hero 7 and it has
image stabilization which I think looks awesome most of the time
except I move my head a lot when I talk so
sometimes you get a weird sideways pan but it should help overall hopefully
pretty cool pretty cool going this way got one left
pretty sure they made this so you can't get down there which is too bad because
it's a cool spot yeah the road used to go this way
they've probably seen it in a couple videos from oh there's another lizard
from last year and the year before but it started to get eroded by the stream
bed here so they rerouted the road over there and
now you can't get in there at all but now the stream is free to erode the
road to nothing it's already so overgrown it's crazy
this gravel is still super loose and sketchy
you gotta love it
we're going left again that's a big branch
I don't want to hit that
I don't know where that goes I wonder though can't go up far like it probably
goes up to a bluff it's just it can't go up very far let's
check it let's check it let's just go look I've
always wondered I bet it's a short little up
a lot of roads up here that aren't on the map now it's going down does it go
down to the water I wonder water's right down there narrow bridge
oh ---- dude there's so many of these cool bridges
all right let's see where this goes cool bridge back there
never been up here before it either connects to the other road or it just
ends up here at a landing there's a bunch of rocks
that's a big tree holy crap that's a landslide right there
that they just moved the road around it looks like
cool more rocks yeah there's a lot of land sliding up
here recently huh we're going up I don't know
where we're going up to we're definitely going up one of the
best things about dual sport riding is I wonder where this road goes and then
you just go and find out we're going up we are going up
this hill doesn't get much higher whoa okay
lots of rocks holy ---- I couldn't get my truck up here well I could but I have
to move a bunch of rocks this is sketchy should I be watching out
for fallen rocks
interesting question
oh look at this but here's what's awesome I think if there's no big trench
behind it we can get around it oh yeah we totally can
we totally can getting back might be interesting okay I want to see what's up
here
you got it baby you got it all right tentative but successful
they definitely closed this road at one point there's another mound
the problem isn't the mounds it's the trenches they dig behind them
usually yeah like this ---- okay do it for youtube
this would be faster if I wasn't waddling I'm guessing
dude am I gonna be able to get out of here gonna have to am I gonna regret
this probably
oh that's two can't have been many more than that right we're entering
non-maintained road territory so keep an eye on the edge because it
could be sketch so a good moto camping spot because
nobody's gonna find you dual sport camping I should say not
getting the verses up here this is interesting there's another one
what's with all the trenches I don't know if I can get through that one guys
up here by myself I am a little tentative on things like this
it's like a twisted ankle would be enough to make it so I couldn't get out
of here let me take a look at it I'm certain I've done way worse stuff
than this on trails many times but they're just gonna keep happening what
the hell's the point yeah I don't know guys I think I'm gonna
call it again by myself I probably could do it I'm 90 sure it
would be fine but it's the 10 that is a problem pretty
cool up here though it's gonna be tough enough to get back over the other two so
oh back down is fun
pretty cool up here though old abandoned road no one's been up here in years I'm
sure I'm certain
there's the first one on this hill too it should make getting up on the side
easy that's what we're gonna do
oh okay could have made it didn't need to put my foot down these rocks right
here sketch the downhill really helps yeah okay we
got it one down
I know more experienced rider less tentative really that's the problem
it's not experience it's a hesitation could take that no
problem see how deep it is on that side if
you just go up the side like that oh yeah easy peasy lemon squeezy well the
one up there wasn't that simple I promise back to our original
destination back down the mountain holy ---- look at that what is that a
red-tailed hawk he's like right in front of me
damn spooked him out of the tree that's gorgeous
this is the ---- I'm telling you you run into in the woods
look at this landslide I don't want to come around these corners too fast
man it was up there too lots of this downhill it's funny they built that
bridge just for this road and that road is closed now here's that
big landslide landslide bring you down
that's pretty cool right there I think why is there a big cave up there
that looks like a mine it's not I don't think it is I don't think I can
get up there anyway but this tree obviously
came down from up there that really looks like a mine
fun little detour but we are being distracted from our primary destination
which is hopefully a very high very awesome viewpoint
there's a radio tower up there so it's got to be an awesome viewpoint but I
don't know if there'll be a gate let's go find out all right back to the
intersection back to the main road there's the big
pretty gorgeous up here look at all the mountains
they're just the foothills
lots of timber country going right
let's put in the navigates to our spot so we're going to try to find the road
that leads up to that bluff where the radio tower is
so I marked it as close as I can get on the map I was stupid and I didn't mark
the the entrance road I didn't mark it when
I was online so I don't know where it is because it doesn't show up on the map
you need the satellite view and I can't get it with no internet
which I'm gonna left
this is pretty sketchy right here too especially that right side
I haven't done any maintenance on this part of the road since the winter
washed half of it away there not impassable by any means just
could become problematic if it continues here's the marsh
hello Mr. Marsh
oh yeah that's graded
scared me I was not expecting to hear a human voice
now we're gonna go right left goes to Gordon Lakes which is a cool little hike
and a decent spot to backpack camp if you want
it's a rock off the skid plate look at that
look at that you guys not terrible right here
not terrible right here
beautiful up here oh butterfly just hit my helmet hopefully he didn't fly in
that would be sketchbook I bet you that is a waterfall in the winter I bet
you
thanks you're welcome sign every time
not a bad view over there yeah not terrible not terrible
all right off to the left is the hill that you climb that we
climbed in the kids first time in the forest video up
to that really cool view is over here I'm gonna keep going and see if there's
a better one this way wow look at that
that's amazing that is amazing wow that's that rock face that you can
see from the other one wonder where this goes
I bet there's some good ---- up there that's so cool over there
we're going down though I don't want to go down we're gonna take a big sharp
left uh down here gotta go around this valley off to the
left that is a hell of a valley stupid as all this is just up here and
nobody ever sees it that's why I love riding around up here because
every time I find something cool like that overlook
I have to wonder how many equally cool things are up here that I've never seen
that lots of people never see like this ---- right here wow
amazing amazing look at this this is what we're doing take a look at
this marked intersection big party spot right
yeah I don't know where that one goes I know it doesn't go where we're going
it's just so pretty I just it's so clear and nice and not too hot
what a day what a day is that rock right underneath it now
well the marker on the map is right up here around the corner
hopefully there's a road nearby that's obvious
if not we have to try some of these side roads well now we're nine miles up I
think from the highway and the other holy ---- dude
three sisters
what have we here this is not the radio tower
but it's not nothing wow wow okay oh it's still around the
corner a little bit maybe the road is right down there
I wonder if this is coming out on the gopro but there's a really cool rock
face over there that's just even you can see for miles
I can't see the mountains as well from here there's got to be a good oh look at
this right where the map says it should be
this might be our spot it's the first tire tracks
people go up here all right well I don't need you anymore done
let's see what's up here very sandy
I mean if there is a radio tower they have to be able to maintain it right
which means you need a road to get up to it this is sandy
now this doesn't go anywhere except I bet there's an awesome ass view
up there oh ---- it totally is it looks awesome we're going to go over
this pile and see what it looks like
dude all right I'm gonna get you a good view of this and I'm gonna take this
helmet off and have some lunch it's amazing seriously
amazing trail down to there I bet it's awesome down there
there's the radio tower unbelievable just unbelievably beautiful damn
nature you pretty these pants have a secret surprise and I
think I'm gonna take advantage of them while I'm up here
they do this which I'm pretty excited about right now when it's 85 degrees up here
here's the magic you ready what shorts bro gonna be a lot more
comfortable I sit here and have lunch for a few minutes
yeah those are probably not going back on put the trip back down
all right I gotta get moving it's hot I didn't put the legs back on my shorts
we're rocking shorts the rest of the way down I may check out that side road
let's see what it looks like oh that's a lot better airflow
that makes a big difference yeah my legs are downright cold
so I'm guessing this road goes out to that actual radio tower
there was that one side road that looked like it headed towards that cool looking
ridge so let's check it out not a bad little view right there
either this is it let's see what it looks like
looks like there was a gate here at one time so that's interesting
that's what that pole is well it's not well traveled I'll tell you that much
seems obvious it's going up though oh ----
oh okay well I wasn't ready for that that was a pothole and a half like a big
rock must have come out of there I'm gonna go a little slower how to get
on the other side just so much foliage on this side
sketch me out just a bit it's a steep shitty road which almost
always means at least somewhere cool
like see all this foliage in the middle means it doesn't get driven or ridden
very often so it could go nowhere or it could come
out to a really really cool spot I don't know we're definitely going up
that's the joy of exploring you know it's funny I saw that
big pothole when I was exactly too late to do anything about it
I was just like well I guess I'm riding through what can you do
give it gas hope for the best this is it huh
damn well it's not a bad camping spot somebody's definitely camped up here
not good shade but better than some but no good view so
that's firewood it's a decent moto camping spot anyway
not what we were after I was really hoping it would go up on this ridge
there's not a bunch of beer bottles or garbage up here so it's not something
that's super well known I don't know though if I was in the
camp in a spot like this I'd do that one up on the other bluff
mark it in your memory it's in the video so I'll be able to find it in the future
right next to that other cool place where I had lunch this descent might be
semi-interesting it's pretty steep right here
this side road totally is okay we're gonna check out this side road
real fast if it's at all sketchy though I'm not
gonna risk it today I just want to see what it looks like
huh well not insurmountable it's not unlike the McCoy trail
it just goes right here it's just the landing this is a better camping spot
oh yeah lots of rocks for a fire pit there's a fire pit right there
so it's been a camping spot I guess there is no way to get up to that rock
face that bluff without climbing it there's
one more side road down here I want to check out
maybe we'll check it on our way it seemed like it had a pretty good view
from what I could see this part's a little rocky okay dr scott
anyone brad rocky dr scott
how's that pothole dude okay it's not as bad as it looked when I
came across it suddenly but it's not nothing
rocky all right that's stuck in my head for the rest of the day
rocky we're going this way beautiful view coming up
you see this this is gorgeous that's the bluff yeah I don't think a
road goes up there I was hoping there might be something
that wound around the other side but that's where we just were over there
we were right under that one I think well there's a road right here that
might get us a better view let's look at it
this is that road let's check it out see where it goes
too much downshifting too much downshifting bro
I'm gonna go slow just because look at this view
and I want to turn my head slightly and I don't want to crash
just a landing right here not a bad camping spot either
obviously someone's camped here well that's three real decent semi-secluded
camping spots I think I'd rather camp up on top if
I'm gonna have no shade anyway good explorers good explorers we found
things probably a good spot for an epic third
to the truck I'll see about heading home so I had a
great time exploring in the woods with you today
I appreciate you coming along I hope you enjoyed it found a really really cool
overlook spot got some awesome scenic views and had a bunch of fun riding in
the woods which is one of my favorite things so if you like
the video please hit the like button don't forget to
subscribe if you want to see more dual sport
or other motorcycling content shenanigans of this nature
again I appreciate you watching thanks a lot and as always
please do not forget to be excellent to each other
I thank you
EXCELLENT!
Just what I needed
