Hello together! Welcome on GermanPod101.com. I'm Elysia, your German coach. In today's
lesson we will talk about untranslatable German words, so really unique words in German that
you cannot really translate in another language and they're really special for the German
culture. Alright? And this lesson is for intermediate learners.
Hallo zusammen! Ich bin Elysia, eure Deutschlehrerin und in der heutigen Stunde reden wir über
unübersetzbare deutsche Wörter. Die Stunde ist geeignet für Mittelstufe-Deutschlerner.
So untranslatable ist unübersetzbar. When you see un, the syllable un in front of a
German word, usually it's a kind of a negative form of the word. So for example, übersetzbar
means it is translatable. When you put un in front, it means it's not translatable.
Okay? So translatable, übersetzbar, untranslatable, unübersetzbar. Okay. Also, erst erkläre ich
euch ein paar Vokabeln, die euch nützlich sind und dann erkläre ich euch die Aussprache
und die Bedeutung dieser einzigartigen Wörter. So first of all, we will talk about the vocabulary
that are useful to you and I will explain to you the pronunciation and the meaning of
each word. So let's start. The first word is das Kopfkino, Kopf, Head, Kino, Cinema.
So Head Cinema. Head Cinema, I chose a picture to explain that word to you later but be patient,
we will talk about it quickly. So nächstes Wort ist die Schnapsidee. Idee is very close
to English, so it's Idea, die Idee, Idea. And I'm pretty sure you have heard about
a Jägermeister, which is an alcohol, a German Schnaps. Schnaps, a kind of alcohol, Schnapsidee.
You can also take a spontaneous picture, which is called Schnapschuss, Schnapschuss. Okay?
It's when you take a spontaneous picture. Then nächstes Wort ist Sturmfrei. Two words
together, combined words. Sturmfrei, Sturm is the storm. Es ist sturmiges Wetter heute.
It's stormy weather today. Frei is free, so storm free. Doesn't make any sense but
shortly you will know the meaning of this word. Dann nächstes Wort ist der Zeitgeist.
Zeit, ach ich hab keine Zeit. I don't have time. Zeit, time. Geist is a ghost. So again
when you combine these two words Zeitgeist, time ghost, you have probably no idea what
it means but I will tell you shortly. Und das letzte Wort ist Fremdschämen. Fremd
ist das Gegenteil von bekannt oder ich kenne das. Fremd oder Fremde, Fremder is a stranger.
Fremdschämen is a verb which means I'm ashamed of something. Ich schäme mich. I'm
ashamed. Fremdschämen, so a shamed stranger, maybe you have an idea what that word means.
Okay, noch ein paar andere wichtige Wörter. So a few more important words for you. Die
Denkweise, Denken to think. Weise, the way to do something, the way to think. Denkweise
is your way to think. Dann nächstes Wort, Sich etwas vorstellen. Sich etwas vorstellen
is you imagine something. Sich vorstellen is also to introduce yourself. So be careful
how you use this word. If it is reflexive, so with the syllable Sich in front, Sich it
means it's a reflexive word, then it means to imagine something. Dann das nächste Wort
ist Verrückt. Bist du verrückt? Maybe you remember one of my lessons that was about
German body language. This is where I explain to you the word Verrückt already. Bist du
verrückt oder hast du einen Vogel? So that means crazy. Then Spontan, very close to English
as well, which means spontaneous. Then the next word is Durchdacht. Durchdacht is the
past tense of think. So etwas ist durchdacht, something is very well thought through. Ich
habe das gut durchdacht, well thought through. Okay, nächstes Wort ist Mann bist du aber
peinlich. Peinlich is when you are embarrassed or you feel embarrassed. Das ist mir so peinlich.
Okay, und dann das nächste Wort ist Unwohl. Same pattern, so mir geht es gut, ich fühle
mich wohl means I feel good. When you put the syllable Un, it means you are not feeling
good. So ich fühle mich heute sehr unwohl, ich habe Bauchschmerzen. So I feel unwell
today, not good today. And finally the last word is die Bühne. Bühne is the stage. Zum
Beispiel die Theaterbühne, the theater stage. Okay, did you get all these words? So repeat
after me. Unübersetzbar, das Kopfkino, Schnapsidee, Sturmfrei, Zeitgeist, Fremdschämen, die Denkweise,
sich etwas vorstellen, verrückt, spontan, durchdacht, peinlich, unwohl und die Bühne.
Now I will explain each word to you. So we have five words, five unique special German
words. Das erste ist Kopfkino. So that was the picture I showed you, Kopfkino, the lady
with the bubble above her head. So wenn ihr zum Beispiel eine Geschichte lest oder hört,
dann stellt ihr euch Bilder in eurem Kopf vor. When you read or listen to a story,
you imagine pictures in your mind. Das ist das Kopfkino. Also in English you could say
mind cinema. Okay, die Schnapsidee is the guy who is drinking alcohol and then he has
a spontaneous idea. A Schnapsidee is usually when you have a spontaneous idea but also
it's not very well thought through. You didn't think about all the aspects of this idea if it
might be realistic or not realistic. Also die Idee kann manchmal nicht sehr realistisch sein,
aber sie ist spontan in euren Kopf gekommen. Okay, dann Sturmfrei. Sturmfrei ist dieses Bild
hier, wo ihr Jugendliche zu Hause feiern seht, weil die Eltern nicht zu Hause sind. So teenagers
alone at home because the parents are not there, they are happy and they might do a
party. Reminds me on the movie also Kevin Alone at Home, Kevin allein zu Haus. Er hatte
eine sturmfreie Bude. Bude is another word for a house, like a free house, a house to himself. Dann
der Zeitgeist. Time ghost is this picture here. So Zeitgeist ist wie die Leute in einer bestimmten
Epoche, zum Beispiel Antike, Mittelalter oder Neuzeit, denken, die Philosophie, wie sie sich
anziehen oder ihre Haare tragen. So in a special period of time, so when you for example think
about the Middle Ages, there were a special way to dress and people believed in witches
for example. So that was particular about a certain period of time. So that word Zeitgeist
describes how people thought in a special kind of period. Okay and the last word is Fremdschämen,
ist wenn du zum Beispiel auf eine Party gehst und das ist die Katze hier, die sich schämt. Ich möchte
das nicht sehen. So zum Beispiel geht ihr auf eine Party, euer Partner ist betrunken, redet sehr
laut oder macht dumme Witze, dann fühlt ihr euch unwohl und schämt euch für sein Verhalten. So
when you go for example for a party, to a party with your partner and he's very drunk and behaves
very silly, talks very loud, is doing silly jokes and you feel ashamed about his behavior. So
that's called Fremdschämen. So ich hoffe, die Stunde hat euch gefallen. I hope you liked this
lesson. Let me know which was your favorite German unique word and don't forget to subscribe to the
channel and like this video. I hope to see you soon, goodbye, tschüss, bis bald.
