Okay, so this week I want to share
the best 15-year-old Scotch whiskies.
My last video introduced
12-year-old Scotch whiskies,
so I want to
thank everyone who subscribed.
I'm really grateful
and I think a lot of people enjoyed
that video,
so I'm going
to continue recommending 15-year-old Scotch whiskies
Before I do recommendations, I want to share some
whisky knowledge
Since I just started this channel, I've made
many videos about whisky,
and I want to update one of them.
I'll continue to do so in the future.
This time, I'm talking about caramel coloring
or E150a.
I want to share
my opinion as a
consumer and enthusiast
about caramel coloring
So what is caramel coloring? E150a
, in short, is a heated
sugar that can be used in food
or whisky. Drinks like cola
can be colored with
E150a. If you look at it, it's flavorless
so the Scottish Whisky Association allows it
to be used as whisky
coloring.
From
a manufacturer's or business's perspective,
do they use caramel coloring
for batch stability
or color stability?
However,
from the perspective of consumers, especially
experienced whisky lovers
like us,
this is purely to
make whiskey more marketable.
In fact,
for an inexperienced consumer who
doesn't know much about whisky,
they'll usually go to a
convenience store or hypermarket and see that
a darker color
might mean it's better,
older, and more flavorful.
Perhaps people tend to think that
whisky must be a deep amber color,
like sorghum .
If you see sorghum that is colored
yellow in a hypermarket, would you buy it?
Of course not.
Because your
mind thinks of white liquor, sorghum,
so you must look for white or clear color.
The average consumer is the same.
When they see whisky, they tend to want
the darker one.
So, if you're talking about batch stability
or color stability,
I don't think it is a complete explanation
it's purely a type of cosmetic for
whisky to make it look better and more sellable
Is it a form of marketing deception?
For
me,
it's a bit of a marketing deception.
If you're an inexperienced person
you might think
the darker the color ,
the more you like it.
If
you look at
these five bottles, you might think the E150a
looks better in amber
or that the darker one looks older.
This is a way of
deceiving novice consumers
and allowing them to get into this whisky scene
For experienced whisky enthusiasts,
I think it's okay
if they put it more transparently on the label.
I think caramel coloring is acceptable
Some people can accept it,
while others can
Those who can't
accept it have at least a more transparent information.
Don't be hazy and
say, "I'm using a natural color," but
there's no information on the label
With the internet so developed these days, it's a bit like
deceiving consumers
to emphasize that
it's a natural color even though it's
clearly not. It's like treating consumers like idiots.
So
I think this isn't a good
idea either. You need to be transparent
and honest, saying, "I'm using caramel,"
or "the whisky is natural." Color
doesn't matter.
Okay, next
I'll teach you
how to tell if there's E150a in the whisky.
There are basically two ways.
The easiest is to look at the label.
If the label says "natural color," it's a natural color.
If it doesn't say "natural color," it
usually does contain caramel.
Like the sample I just mentioned
some wine merchants will say
"It is natural color,"
but the label doesn't clearly say so.
Yet, it's stated online
that caramel coloring is used
If you want to know
more , you can check out
two websites or apps.
The first app or website
you can refer to is the German website
Whic.de.
Okay, let's take a look at the
Whic.de section.
Let's start with a sample
I look up Auchentoshan Three Wood
, since they claim it's a natural color.
But
if you go to the German website and look at the
Auchentoshan Three wood, look down.
In this section, you need to look for the word
"FARBSTOFF."
You'll see "JA" written on the side of FARBSTOFF
which is German means with added color
word for Yes with coloring
German laws are very
strict. Let's look at Macallan 12 Year Old Double Cask
which is also more
transparent because it
has "natural color" on the label. Is it colored? Then let's look
at Fakten.
And you see it says Farbstoff "NEIN" here.
Farbstoff Nein means no caramel,
so you can check the German website.
The second thing you can refer to
is downloading the Zhongwei app
from mainland China.
Come on, let me open it.
Okay, let's look for
the Auchentoshan three wood,
because we just ordered
them. So, look down and find the ingredients
...see?
Look at that theres: water, barley, Auchentoshan has
a caramel color.
Let's take a look at Macallan.
Look down at the ingredients
in Macallan 12 Year Old Double Cask
. You'll see it only contains standard water and barley,
so this is the natural color.
So, if you want to
check to see if
a whisky has caramel
or not,
you can get the real answer
by using these three methods.
Okay, finally,
I want to know
if caramel coloring is harmful to the body.
Actually, if you
drink or eat too much of something,
it can cause harm.
So, if you drink too much whisky,
especially one with caramel in it
, it's actually not good for your health.
So, you should still eat and drink rationally.
They say that
caramel coloring is
actually carcinogenic
but you would have to drink a lot.
Maybe you have to drink several barrels of whisky
in a day or two, or drink
hundreds of liters of cola,
for this to happen.
Anyway, we can't drink that much,
so it 's best
to drink whiskey
rationally
What about you?
What do
you think about this caramel coloring?
Please leave a comment below
and welcome to discuss.
Then let's move on to the next part!
Okay, without further ado,
let's take a look at
these six 15-year-old Scotch whiskies that
are worth buying.
For
the sixth place, I would choose Glenfarclas 15 years old.
It has an alcohol content of 46%, is non-chill filtered,
and does not have E150a.
Its price is around 1,300. I think
among the core range of Glenfarclas
the 15 year old one has a relatively high CP value
because it is the only one with an alcohol content of 46%
and it seems that it is not chill filtered.
so its texture is oilier and thicker.
Glenfarclas is one
of the few distilleries that
still uses direct fire heating,
so its wine body is a little different.
This one
has a very fragrant flavor of dried fruits,
such as raisins and
citrus.
It has a lemony flavor
and a
Christmas fruitcake-like aroma.
So I quite like the Glenfarclas 15-year-old,
one of the general drinking whiskies.
This is number six, the Glenfarclas 15-year-old.
Next, let's look at number five . For
number five, I'd choose
the Glenallechie 15-year-old.
It's 46% alcohol by volume, non-chill-
filtered, and uncolored.
It costs around 1,900.
This has a more sherry-
like, rich whisky feel.
I recommended the 12-year-old in the last episode,
but the 15-year-old is a step up,
and its flavor is quite balanced.
I went to Billy's Master
Tasting
last time, and I tried the 15-year-old
I was really impressed,
so I started buying
it. And if you look at the price of the Glenallechie 15 core series
, the 12-year-old is around 1,000.
1,300, and the 15-year-old is 1,900, which is still very reasonable.
But if you go up to 18 years,
the 18-year-old Glenallechie costs around
4,000-5,000.
So
more than twice the price of the 15 year old, and
only 3-year-older but the price jumps well above double.
So I think the balance between age and price
is very good.
It has a more layered feeling.
I have also tasted the 18-year-old, but
it is different.
This one is stronger.
The 18-year-old may be too soft and light, but
this is a very good vintage in my opinion.
As for the Glenallechie distillery,
this one is currently ranked fifth. The Glenallechie 15-year-old is good.
Then for fourth place,
I would choose
Glencadam 15-year-old.
It is 46% alcohol by volume
non-chill filtered, and uncolored
It costs around 1,800
This one has a
very balanced
vanilla, citrus, and floral aromas. I actually quite like the distillery called Carden
They use pure ex bourbon barrels, and you
rarely see sherry barrels in this distillery,
so the body of the whisky is quite noticeable,
and the flavor of the whisky is very obvious.
Their bourbon
is truly a classic Scotch whisky
but
this distillery is a niche distillery and
not many people know about
it . But I think
Glencadam's products are pretty good
and worth buying.
I quite like
the 15-year- old,
and its 10-year-old is also great,
but the 15-year-old
feels like the next level and is better and
and tastes deeper
, with the flavor of the barrel being stronger.
So this is the fourth
place, Glencadam
15 Years Old.
In third place, I would choose Springbank 15 Years Old
, which is 46% alcohol by volume,
non-chill filtered, and uncolored.
The price is around 5,000.
This one
is quite expensive
You know I'm a fan of Springbank
but because of the price, it can only
be ranked third.
However, I
think it is more balanced and complex
than Springbank 18 years . The taste
of 18 years
may be a bit monotonous due to that batch.
I probably had. But
the Springbank15 years has
many
layers. It is also a sherry bomb
The age is enough
, so it is very
strong and comfortable. It is a
sherry bomb from
Campbeltown . However, it is really hard to buy.
Every time I go to the Drinks, to pre-order,
it is always sold out. It seems like someone is buying it up.
Anyway, it is a core range whisky
If you
want to make it an investment, you probably will lose money in the end haha
Because of
this, it can only be ranked third.
So sorry,
Springbank 15 years
is ranked third. For second place, I would choose
Glenscotia 15-year-old
is 46% alcohol by volume,
non-chill filtered, and uncolored
and the price is around 1,700.
It is a bourbon-matured whisky
that has been finished in sherry casks
I think it has many layers,
because it has the flavors of two
classic bourbon casks, such as vanilla
, cream, toffee, and citrus, and also
the flavors of dark fruits
in sherry casks , such as blueberries, strawberries, and raisins.
It
has
the flavor and spirit of Glenscotia distillery.
When you drink this, you will know that
this is the flavor
of Glenscotia
, and it also has the style of Campbeltown,
with the taste of sea breeze and sea water
, a little salty,
and then with the addition of bourbon and sherry casks
it is quite good and balanced. It is much easier to buy
than
the Springbank 15
and not that expensive.
So this is the second place Glenscotia 15-year-old.
Okay, now we come to the first recommended video,
and I will choose
the Benromach 15-year-old.
It has a 43% alcohol content
, is chill-filtered, and has no coloring.
It costs around 1,700.
This time, the Benromacht has that old Speyside
sherry style
so it's very well made.
And at 15 years old, it feels
older than 15 years.
This is a
great everyday whisky
that is very well made.
Although it has only 43% alcohol content
and is chill-filtered
it tastes
very full.
It has a strong body, but it also has a smooth
and comfortable finish.
I
had this one in the Kingway blind tasting challenge
last year . It's the best one I chose.
The aroma
is very fragrant
and the taste is great. It's strong, oily, and full, and
the finish is the longest and best
