Climbing shoes are an essential part of a climber's gear, and top athletes put a lot of thought into choosing the right shoes for their needs. From the hardest v17 boulders to 9c routes, climbers need shoes that offer maximum performance, comfort, and durability. In this article, we take a closer look at what some of the world's top climbers use on their feet.
I've spent hours trying to find the elite level climbing shoes of the strongest pro climbers.
These are the shoes that the strongest pro climbers use to climb the hardest V17 boulders,
9c routes and these are the shoes that have won World Cup competitions.
I'm also going to share with you details of how these pro climbers use them that you'll be surprised to know.
This is Kip from Bouldering Highlights and these are the climbing shoes of the strongest climbers.
Starting off with the strongest outdoor boulderer in the world today, Sean Raboutou, brother to Brooke Raboutou.
The shoes he used for the world's hardest boulders, graded V17, were a combination of Las Potivas Solutions and Miuras.
As you can see on his ascent of Alfvén, he rocked the Solution on his right and Miuras on his left.
You will see that this is a trend for Las Potivas climbers.
Jimmy Webb is known as the world's best flash boulderer.
He flashed 6 V13s or higher boulder problems and completed the first ascent of Sleepwalker 8c+, after 11 days of effort.
The grade was confirmed by Daniel Woods, who by the way, wears Evolve Phantoms.
Jimmy Webb is sponsored by Tenaya and seems to wear their Mastias.
On the indoor side, the shoe of choice for Olympic gold medalist and greatest competition climber of all time, Yanya Gambret, wears the 510 High Angle Pros.
But stick around for which specific version she uses.
One interesting thing about Yanya is that she uses the High Angle Pros for basically everything.
Indoors, outdoors and even speed during the Olympics.
However, Yanya Gambret's greatest rival, Ai Mori, wears the very interesting Las Potivas Futuras for bouldering.
The Futura is one of the Las Potivas no-edge technology shoes in which there is no sharp edge at the edge of the toe.
This allows for more leeway when placing your foot on indistinct holes or when smearing.
In traditional climbing shoes, the pressure exerted by the climber focuses more on the profile of the sole.
With no edge construction in weight, the climber is distributed more evenly on a greater amount of surface rubber.
This is evident by the...
But what does the greatest climber of all time, Adam Ondra, use?
Adam Ondra used the Las Potivas Solution Comps to send their hardest route in the world, Silence 9c.
He mainly uses the Las Potivas theories for bouldering and Solution Comps for lead competitions.
However, he is not the only 9c climber.
Seb Wynne, famous for sending DNA 9c, rocks a very unique brand called the EB Sentinel.
Magnus Meatball, I mean Meatbowl, I mean Magnus Meatball is so good at climbing.
He only wears rental shoes.
Just kidding, he doesn't even need shoes because he just campuses everything in the gym.
Go for it!
First time I did that actually.
Both Magnus and Olympic silver medalist Nathaniel Coleman rock the Scarpa Dragos.
Let's also check out almost 9c climber Alex Migos' shoes.
He rocks the Tanaya Iatis and famously became the first to on-site 9a in them.
Another Tanaya fan is Chris Sharma.
However, in this clip, I have no idea what he's wearing.
So if you know, comment down below.
Stefano Gusoffoli, who recently climbed Excalibur 9b+,
uses the La Sportiva Solution Comp and also has the Miura in his arsenal.
Tomoa Narasaki, the multiple World Cup bouldering champion, uses the Umperell flagship.
Even though the TM Pros were made in his name and made specifically for him,
he seems to prefer the flagships.
Umperell is also coming out with new models this year designed by Tomoa Narasaki.
Meichi Narasaki, Tomoa Narasaki's younger brother,
recently won the finals of the Japan Bouldering Cup,
and you can see that competition. Link in the comments.
He has triumphed over the strongest competition, including his own brother Tomoa.
Meichi Narasaki uses the La Sportiva Series, currently in a very unique burgundy colour.
I think this is a Japan exclusive, but it could be just customised for him.
He used the Solution Comp a few years ago though.
Futsaba Ito also won the Japan Bouldering Cup,
flashing all 4 boulders in the women's finals,
defeating the climbing sensation Ai Mori.
Highlights of that in the comments and in the link in the description.
But the most important thing to remember,
is that the shoe is only as good as the climber who uses it.
Climbing shoes do get stinky however,
so clean them easily and quickly with these 3 simple steps in this video.
