Beto O'Rourke PAC under investigation over funding of Texas Democrats' redistricting walkout
We take you to Texas now. The FBI is getting involved in a Texas redistricting fight.
Senator John Cornyn says FBI Director Kash Patel has approved a request for the agency to assist state law enforcement
in locating House Democrats who left Texas to protest new congressional maps.
Meanwhile, the state attorney general has launched an investigation into a political action committee founded by Beto O'Rourke.
CBS News Texas is following the latest developments and breaks it all down.
Attorney General Ken Paxton says former Representative Beto O'Rourke illegally raised money to help out the Democrats
who left the state house earlier this week.
As you know, those Texas House Democrats left the state in order to block Texas House Republicans
from passing new district maps that would effectively give the Republicans, the GOP, five more seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.
And by leaving the state, those Democrats now face a fine of $500 per day.
Attorney General Paxton claims O'Rourke's political action committee is illegally financing the out-of-state travel.
He issued a request to examine, which demands documents and communications from the committee.
O'Rourke's team did confirm they are raising money for the Democrats through his PAC.
They're trying to stop the consolidation of authoritarian power in America as Trump and Greg Abbott and Ken Paxton
and the Republicans in Texas, thick as thieves, try to steal these five seats in Texas.
Those 56 Texas Democrats are all that stand between that future and where we are right now.
And so we've got to have their backs.
This comes as Governor Abbott filed a lawsuit with the Texas Supreme Court
to remove Texas House Democratic Caucus Chairman Gene Wu from office.
The governor accused Wu of abandoning his post and being the ringleader of the Democrats who left the state.
While Wu says he's doing his civic duty, Republican State Representative Katrina Pearson of Rockwell
applauds the governor's efforts.
We are constitutionally required to be here.
So pulling political stunts like that is not representing your district.
These guys are fleeing for political purposes and there should be accountability.
Representative Wu has until Friday, that's tomorrow, at 5 p.m. to file his response with the Texas Supreme Court,
his response to Governor Abbott's lawsuit to remove him from his office.
Also happening tomorrow, another deadline, House Speaker Dustin Burroughs plans to reconvene the entire House
and try and get a quorum at 1 o'clock tomorrow afternoon.
He's going to try and get at least 100 lawmakers present in the House.
We'll have to wait and see if that happens.
