We read about prayer warriors.
We read about prayers that opened the doors for Peter that healed the sick for Paul.
We've heard people described as a person who can pray the paint off the walls, but
sometimes we feel so weak.
And what if our prayers are not very poetic, not very passionate?
Does heaven hear the enfeebled prayer of a weary soul?
I'm so happy, according to Scripture, to tell you that the resounding answer is yes,
yes, that the power of prayer resides not with the one who makes the prayer, but the
one who hears the prayer.
And God does not hear our prayers based on our brilliance or our intelligence, because
there are so many times we are neither of the two.
But God hears our prayers because he loves us.
You have a voice that is heard in heaven.
So what you pray in the night is heard in the light of God's throne.
You keep track of all my songs, you have collected all my tears in your bottle, and
you have recorded each one in your book.
There's hope, there's hope because there's prayer.
I want to ask you a question.
Have you ever felt like giving up on God?
There have been times in my ministry, the answer to that is yes.
There have been some Monday mornings in my life I said I've had enough.
There are some of you here right now, my piece of advice is, you may be tempted to
give up on God, you better stick with God.
One thing is 100% true all the time, here it is.
God hears and God answers prayer.
You will never be so rich, you'll never be so big, you'll never be so strong, you'll
never be so popular, you don't need God.
Matter of fact, let me tell you something, you're depending on God right now for your
next heartbeat.
You're depending on God right now for your next breath.
God will hear your prayer.
God will answer your prayer.
But I need to remind you there are different answers to prayer.
For example, some answers are direct, and we've all had this happen to us, right?
We've all prayed for something, it's almost like, man, like the next day, God gave it
to him.
Now, sometimes God's answers are delayed.
You see, God is so wise, he not only gives us what we want or what we need, but he
gives it to us when we need it.
Now, you won't like this next one, but sometimes God's answers are denied.
I hate to tell you this, no is an answer.
No is an answer.
I can honestly tell you, listen, I look back on my life, and I think I'm more
thankful for the prayers that God said no to than I am the prayers that God said yes
to.
Because if God had said yes to my prayers, I wouldn't be married to the greatest woman in
the world today if God had answered my prayers the first time.
God knows what he's doing.
He's never late.
He's never early.
Because I have a Father who's not just good, he is perfect.
But you've got to keep on asking, and you've got to keep on seeking, and you've got to
keep on knocking.
You cannot give up on the God who never gives up on you.
Matthew 7, starting in verse 7, ask and it will be given to you.
Seek and you will find.
Knock and it will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, it
will be opened.
Or which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone?
Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent?
If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more
will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him?
How much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask?
Real prayer begins with real relationship.
If we view God as a distant God up in the heavens, uncaring, I will never go to him with
the things that are going on in my life.
Because why would he care?
If that is our view of God and not as Father, we'll miss out.
If you, who are evil, who you know the things going on in your heart and mind sometimes,
if you, who are evil, still give good things to your kids, what about me?
If you, in all of your brokenness, still know that you want to give your kids the best.
I'm perfect.
I am holy, all loving, all powerful.
If you, who are evil, still want your kids to have great things, what about me?
Just ask.
To the ones who ask, the Father gives what is good and needed.
Notice, I didn't say to the ones who ask, he gives what we ask for.
Sometimes in his very goodness, he does not give us what we ask for.
And sometimes he moves instantly.
There are times I've prayed prayers and he's done it immediately.
Those times are great.
There are things I've been asking God for for over a decade that haven't happened yet.
So I'm going to keep asking, keep seeking.
I'm going to keep knocking, asking the Lord to move, putting my burdens at the feet of
the one who has the power, but not just the one that has the power.
The one who I get to call Father, we get to put our stuff to him, believing and trusting
he will move in our lives.
God isn't grading your prayers as if you've got to get it right any more than you grade
your own children when they come to talk to you.
He just wants you, he just wants honesty.
See, if Jesus said, man, that's the God, that's what God wants, just come, ask, bring
yourself to him.
Here's a question.
If you got everything you asked God for this last week, just think about the last seven
days. If you got everything you asked God for the last seven, the last week, would your
life look any different today?
And you know why that question wrecked me a few weeks ago when I saw it?
Because I thought about the last seven days and I thought, I don't know if it would.
See, here's my guess.
We're not even asking.
We're not even taking up, most of us aren't taking Jesus up on the single greatest offer
that he makes related to the relationship that he wants to have with us.
We just don't even ask.
Christianity is much dependent, in the proper sense, on prayer.
Prayer. No prayer, no power.
Little prayer, little power.
Much prayer, much power.
Prayer is the key to power in the Christian life.
And we learn that prayer is asking.
So many times we ask men, but we don't ask God.
Paul said, Timothy, you need to learn that prayer is supplication.
It's asking.
And I believe tonight, many of us need to get a prayer list going.
You need to get a place.
You need to get a time with the Lord where you spend time.
Husbands, pray for your wife.
Pray for your wife.
Pray for your children.
I don't want to start my day without kneeling down to him and worshiping him and telling him how great he is
and telling him how much I need him.
Oh, we say Jesus is in our heart.
We say he's in our life.
But do you talk to him?
I believe we ought to all begin our day in prayer.
Begin it with the Lord.
First of all, you need to pray.
Pray first.
Here's my question to you.
Have you prayed first?
When you think about prayer, prayer should be our or your first line of defense.
Not your last resort.
I want to motivate you to be a person, no matter who you are, that prays first.
Pray first for your kids.
Pray first for that situation that is going on.
Pray first, not pray last resort.
Pray first.
