In this video, I use the Sho Sugi Ban technique to char the tongue and groove siding I purchased for the cabin, then I apply some transparent redwood timber oil. It's easier to do this at home then take the siding to the property.

all right i got a lot of this tongue and
groove siding
that i want to use on the cabin
and uh
it's got a lot of flaws in it it's got a
lot of pieces that are busted out some
pieces that are warped cracked split
it's a little twisted
so i got it at a pretty good discount
i think
they were listed at like nine dollars a
board and i got them for five dollars a
board
because of all the the damage but i've
worked with this stuff before
in
just this kind of shape before and it
comes out fine
that's uh exactly the shape it was in
when i worked on my shed
but i want to
burn this wood
just to give it more of an aged look
so i picked up this propane torch from
harbor freight
and it is the green wood
propane torch
and it's supposed to hook up to
a 20 gallon tank
so that's what i want to do is i want to
get that hooked up see if i can't burn
these planks and
maybe put some stain on them and see how
it's going to look so
that's this video
so let's get to it
all right first thing you want to notice
is that this connects by screwing
inside
and these newer 20 gallon tanks have
both the external
screw or the internal screw so
and another thing that you want to
notice is that this doesn't go in
righty tighty lefty loosey it's just the
opposite
so you got to remember that you don't
want to cross thread this when you're
installing it
and the kit comes with a wrench
which you're going to need in order to
get this tight
so let me get this attached
okay so i can go about halfway before uh
it gets too tight for me to
go any further by by hand
all right i hope this has some gas in it
i'm gonna go ahead and open this up
see if i can get it lighted
got this turned all the way off
so let me open this up
that's open wide open
not getting a whole lot of flame out of
this thing
i'm wondering if this tank is
low on uh
propane
yeah i'm not sure that's going to work
let's see what it does anyway
that's not doing anything
i think that tank's empty
let me go swap the tank and we'll see if
we can't get that working better to turn
it off
you just turn this
to minus
that closes it off
turns it off there
all right i swapped out tanks so uh let
me turn this one on we'll give this one
a shot
all right again to turn this on you just
switch this towards the plus
that's more like it
oh yeah this is going to make short work
of this
[Music]
do
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
[Applause]
so
[Music]

[Music]

alright so i want to take one of these
and
spread some of this timber oil on
just to see how it's going to look
shake
so
all right i remember from using it
before
that when you applied it it looked
really bright orange but then it dries a
richer
redwood color so you can see this is the
side
without the stain
and here it is with the stain
i think that's going to look fantastic
so that's
how i want
to stain the siding for the cabin
so i'm going to go ahead and
keep burning these and this is similar
to what you would do with shishugi bond
i'm not burning it that much
that it would equal you know what you
would do with sashugiban
i'm just trying to
kind of enhance the looks of the siding
so i'm just kind of
just charring up the the surface
all right i was able to get all
of the boards burned
and i had enough of the timber oil
to get
most of them done i still have
i think five left over here
i've got four left
so i came really close to being able to
get all of them done but
i couldn't
so but i do have enough
to do the entire front wall of the cabin
because i i purchased a couple of extras
so
i have enough to do the cabin
plus i think three extras just in case
uh there's probably a couple of these
that i'm not going to be able to use
there's a lot of them that are twisted
and busted up so
hopefully i'll be able to use them all
but just in case
so i know that this looks
really orange right now but it's the
same
stain that i used on my fence in the
back there
so i know that it's going to
dry a much richer
color
[Music]
but this is uh going to be deciding for
the cabin
um
probably you can't tell here but i think
it's going to look great
at least uh at least i hope so
so i just wanted to do just a quick
video
i'm not at the property this weekend not
going to be there next weekend either
but i just wanted to
show you a little bit of progress behind
the scenes i'll be taking this down
there and we'll get it we'll get it
installed hopefully on the next trip
that i go down there still have to side
install a couple of windows
and uh hopefully i'll be able to get uh
at least the front wall sided
so that's gonna do it for this video
so i'll talk to you guys later
