Once, in a peaceful Chinese village, there was a mountain named Heaven Peak.
The villagers had a dream to construct a temple at the very top, where their prayers might climb
up to the sky. But the climb was steep. The path was dangerous. The elders announced,
who can make a staircase to the top, will honor himself and us all.
The problem gave the entire village an exciting buzz. Wei was a very strong young man. His arms
were powerful. His voice was resounding with confidence. I will come faster than anybody
up the stairs, he boasted. The villagers clapped. Surely, Wei would succeed. But now,
another person came forward. An old widow named Lin. Her back was bent. Her hands trembled with
age. The crowd laughed. Grandmother Lin, you can hardly take water out of the well.
You are going up the mountain. How will you construct stairs? Lin smiled and only said,
I will carry one stone a day. The work began. Wei climbed the mountain with massive stones.
He moved fast. He moved strong. Every day he set up heavy stones and shouted proudly.
His strength was cheered by the villagers. In the meantime, Lin carried only a small stone a day.
She tied it in her cloth. Step by step, slowly, she walked up the path and laid it down.
Initially, the stairs of Wei went up fast. Lin's appeared to be nothing at all. But weeks passed.
Wei grew tired. Some mornings, he slept in. On other days, he said, I will do twice tomorrow.
His collection of stones was soon deserted at the foot of the hill. And Lin? She never stopped.
During the summer heat, the autumn winds, the snow of winter, the rain of spring,
she climbed every single day. Her legs shook, yet still, she said, only one more stone,
just one, today. Days became months. Months became years. And one morning, a bell was ringing on the
top of the mountain. The villagers came out. They looked up and gasped. There was now a staircase
all the way to the temple on the peak of heaven. Prayers sounded in the sky. It was Lin's work.
The woman they had doubted, the woman they had laughed at, had made the staircase a one stone
at a time. The people bowed before her. Grandmother Lin, they said, you were not the strongest.
You were not the fastest. But your consistent steps have made a highway to heaven.
And Wei? He stood in the crowd, silent. He realized then, talent without constancy
is like thunder without rain. It is noisy, yet cannot feed the earth. After that day,
the staircase was called the Path of Patience. Long distance travelers came to walk it,
has been influenced by the tale of the old woman, who made the highway of heaven with one stone in
one day. So remember this, my friends. Those who do things in bursts of greatness are not successful.
It is part of those who do not give up. Even the smallest effort, repeated daily,
is transformed into a mountain of success. Carry your stone today. Carry another tomorrow.
And one day, you too, will be king of your own mountain. Tracing the tracks
your perseverance has made. Because consistency always beats talent.
