Rememering Sister Jean
Will Rivas here and with the life and
legacy of a beloved 100-year-old sister
who became a staple at March Madness.
Will, you had the pleasure of speaking
with Sister Jean a few years ago.
I did. It was an honor and a privilege.
And Sister Jean became famous late in
life at 98 years old to be exact. But
her life until she became the best known
college basketball fan around was filled
with purpose and service.
She was one of America's most beloved
college basketball fans. Sister Jean
Dolores Schmidt was the chaplain for the
Lyola University men's basketball team
for over 30 years.
That's the guardian angel right there,
Sister Jean.
The Catholic nun capturing the sports
world's imagination, becoming something
of a viral sensation at the age of 98
when her ramblers reached the NCAA Final
Four in 2018. In 2023, I had the
pleasure of sitting down with Sister
Jean to talk about her legacy. What
legacy do you think that you have left
here?
I hope they remember that I'm humble
with all this when they write such
beautiful notes to me and tell me I'm
such an inspiration. I never knew I was
making that impact. I also want them to
remember me as just loving everybody
and everybody loved her back.
Everyone loved Sister G.
She was always just a very special
woman. She lights up when a student
approaches her.
Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt was 106
years old.
God bless Sister Jean. And Lyola
announcing the passing of their iconic
chaplain, the president of the Sisters
of Charity, Blessed Virgin Mary
University, saying, quote, "She saw God
present in all that surrounded her and
trusted in his goodness and her presence
with us will be greatly missed." And I
concur. She
humility and love. She will be
remembered. A lot of basketball. A lot
of basketball. All right.
