Over the last four years, I sat across
from almost a thousand families who were
thinking about relocating to Tampa. And
you know what they didn't ask about
first? They didn't ask about the granite
countertops, about how close the house
was to the beach, the number of
bedrooms, not even about hurricanes.
They asked about the quiet stuff, the
real fears that wake you up at 2:00 a.m.
And if you're thinking about moving to
Tampa and you've got that tiny voice
playing in your head saying, "But what
if this is a mistake?" You're not alone.
In this video, I'm breaking down the
seven scariest concerns I hear from real
families just like you and what we've
learned from walking through it
together. And if we've never met before,
my name is Juan Alkala and almost 7
years ago now, my wife Kate and I packed
up our family of five, moved,200 miles
south here to the Tampa Bay area and
have been loving it ever since. And
while we were excited to make the move,
we were also scared out of our minds. We
were stepping into the unknown. We
didn't even know anybody here. We
weren't just chasing sunshine. We were
chasing peace of mind and a life that
felt less like a hamster wheel and more
like living. And if you're anything like
us or the couple hundred families we've
worked with, you probably have some of
the same fears, too. So, let's talk
through them. Now, I think the biggest
voice probably playing in most of our
minds, I know it was for Kate and I, is
what if this doesn't feel like home? And
I'm going to be honest with you, it's
not going to feel like home because it's
not where you grew up. it's most likely
not where your family currently is and
there's going to be change and this is
always one of the first things that I
hear and it's one of the first things
that we felt. So, you know what if we
get there and something just feels off.
That is a normal thing to be saying
internally. You know, you spent years
building a rhythm. You know, you've got
your favorite coffee spot back at home,
your go-to pizza place, the school drop
off line. You might know that In and
Out. And now you're wondering, you know,
will Tampa ever feel like home to us?
Because here's the scary truth. A
beautiful house won't matter if you feel
like a stranger every time you pull into
the driveway. That's just real life.
That's why we just don't talk about zip
codes. We talk about lifestyle alignment
a lot with our clients and on this
channel. Where do you like to eat? How
do you spend your weekends? Do you want
peace or do you want people? Or to be
honest, does peace come from being
around people? Everybody's a little bit
different in terms of how they're wired
because the vibe of a neighborhood
mirrors your rhythm. And it shouldn't
take long for it to feel like home if
you get it right the first time. Another
one of those questions is probably
running around in your mind. Is Tampa
overhyped? Am I overthinking this entire
thing? Believing this move is going to
be something that it never is going to
live up to. And that's a great question
to ask yourself. And it usually comes
out in this question. Be honest, Juan.
Is Tampa actually worth it? You know,
there's so much noise online. You know,
you can check out the Instagram reels
with rooftop bars, the beach drone shots
that I put out there. you know, the the
paddle boarding shots, people fishing,
they're out hanging on the beach,
they're walking the city, I know what it
looks and feels like. And if you've ever
been burned by a place that looked
better on paper or on YouTube than it
did in person, I totally get it. And the
scary part isn't that Tampa's bad. It's
wondering if you're about to trade in
everything familiar to you and your
family for something fake. And I think
we can all relate to that. But here's
what I tell our clients. You're not
moving for a vacation. You're moving for
alignment. You're moving for lifestyle.
Most of the people we work with aren't
just chasing trends. They're chasing an
actual lifestyle that they've been
building in their mind for potentially
years or maybe just a few months, but
sunshine that doesn't come with burnout,
so to speak. And you know, it's one of
the things that my friends ask me all
the time. We've been here almost 7 years
now. And they ask, they say, "Juan, what
is the biggest difference between living
in Florida after all that you've been
through, including hurricanes and
everything else, and the Midwest?" And I
always tell everybody, you don't have to
shovel sunshine. And that puts joy in my
life. It it puts a smile on my face. And
it puts a smile on their face, too,
because honestly, that's why a lot of
our clients are moving here, not just
for the sunshine, but for the lifestyle.
And when that's your filter, Tampa is
going to deliver. And this question, as
a parent, is one that I know we can all
relate to. And it's the one that keeps
most of us up at night. And is, will
this move mess up our kids? Right? the
fear under the fear, so to speak. Will
they make friends? How will they make
friends? Will schools be good? I've read
a lot of things about Florida education,
and to be quite honest with you, some of
them are true, and some of them are so
inaccurate, it's wild. However, that
information is out there. Will they
resent us for leaving everything or
everyone they've ever known? These are
very tough questions you have to answer
as a parent, and I've heard the tears on
these calls. I've had parents pause the
conversation to check their kids because
the fear is real, y'all. So, don't feel
like you're alone in this. I know
exactly what that feels like. We took
our three kids and moved them away from
their grandparents and everything that
that they ever knew. And it was so hard.
I mean, there was so many tears when we
were pulling out of the driveway. But
what we found over time is it really was
the right move for our family. Now, our
family comes and visits us now a lot.
Obviously, there's a a lot of a benefit
to that, but to be quite honest with
you, the time that we spend with them
and and we usually see them at least two
or three times a year, the time is much
more intentional and it feels good and
and the kids take note of that as well.
So, you're not just moving across state
lines, you're moving across your child's
entire emotional world. But here's what
we've seen. Kids are super resilient,
typically more than us parents are,
especially when you find a community
that supports them. And there are a lot
of other people going through the thing
that you're going through right now.
They've either been through it, are
currently going through it, or about to
start that journey along with you. So,
there are a lot of people who relocate
to the area. So, you're not alone on
this. And remember, Tampa does have some
top tier public schools. We've got great
private options and charter options. And
there are neighborhoods where kids are
all over the place. You can plug them
into the park and trust me, they will
not have a difficult time finding
friends. And ultimately, I think this
question really boils down to parents,
too. Where are we going to feel
supported? Where are we going to find
those friendships? So, I can relate. I
understand. And it's a legitimate
question. As a father and as a husband,
I know this question really weighs heavy
on my heart. And is what if I'm making a
financial mistake for the family? And
let's call it what it is. Moving is
expensive. There is nothing cheap about
relocating your family. Real estate is
not a cheap investment, right? over time
it, you know, it can absolutely bring
you a lot of blessings. But if you move
somewhere and make a mistake, you should
not expect that you're going to walk
away from that house and make a profit.
As a matter of fact, it's probably going
to cost you, you know, thousands of
dollars if you make that mistake. So,
you need to get it right the first time.
So, asking yourself this question is
important. And unlike 5 years ago, Tampa
is not a budget option anymore. Is it
affordable? Yes. Um, is it cheap?
Absolutely not. When we moved here, it
was cheap. I thought we were getting an
absolute steal versus what we were
getting in return. But the world found
out. Everybody moved here over the last
5 years, and those prices have continued
to rise. And especially in those places
where people want to live. I've had
families sell a $2 million home in
California or Seattle or in Chicago or
in Boston and still feel nervous about
buying a $600 to $900,000 house here
because it's not about the price tag,
it's about the risk, right? You ask the
questions, "What if I'm buying the wrong
house? What if we hate it and it can't
sell? What if we underestimate
everything?" And these are all really
important questions that need to be
asked. And if we're honest with oursel,
the scariest part isn't just the money.
The money's important, but it's the
regret. That's why we walk clients
through the real numbers, insurance,
floods, taxes, HOE fees, so there's no
surprise for them. And if that home
stretches you farther than you're
comfortable with, we don't just cheer
you on. We help you weigh the
trade-offs. the long term, what's
important to you and your family because
smart decisions start with clarity, not
emotion. If you have any questions that

right the first time. Now, this next
question I know is very common because
it's one of Google Trends largest asked
questions, which is, you know, how's the
weather in Florida? Which is really code
for is the heat going to break us? And
let's talk about Florida's favorite
horror story. You know, that's the heat.
Now, I've met with families that were
all in here on Tampa until they visited
us in August in September, and they were
like, Juan, it felt like we were walking
around through soup. And I can totally
relate. I remember our first year here.
We moved in into December, so we hadn't
experienced a Gulf Coast summer yet. I
went over to Miami to see some friends.
And uh uh um there was a gentleman there
and he said, "Wan, have you ever lived
through a Gulf Coast summer before or
experienced that?" And I said, "No,
why?" He goes, "Because it's like waking
up to a Labrador Retriever 2 in from
your face." And I remember looking at
him like, "I'm not quite sure that's
true." And then we got to July of the
following year. And oh boy, were we in
for a rude surprise. Now, here's what I
need you to know. There are people who
love the heat. And I mean, they love it.
They are all about having to sweat.
That's their thing. There are people who
are terrified of it, who can't handle
it. Honestly, there are those people.
So, you need to know who you are. I
personally in my family are of the
mindset that we would rather sweat
through two pairs of clothing each day
rather than having to go outside, chip
the ice off the car, warm up the
vehicle, shovel the driveway, not see
sun for 6 months. And that is our
prerogative. Maybe not yours, but this
is something you need to be aware of
because the reality is July, August,
September, even in October, it is hot,
y'all. It is like we're in an oven. And
it's a thick one, too, because there is
a big bowl of water in there. It's just
pouring moisture in the air. So, I'm
calling it what it is because that is
what you have to endure to get through
the magical winter time when it's 77°
and the sun is shining. Is it worth it?
I don't know. It's worth it to us. Is it
worth it to you? You're going to have to
make that decision. And you're not
trading heat for perfection. You got to
remember that. You're trading it for the
possibility, right? Because while it is
hot in the summer, you're also going to
be outside with your kids in February,
playing soccer, playing baseball,
playing football, doing all the things
that you can't do if you move from a
northern or a cold climate in the
winters. And to be real, most of our
clients adjust within one season. And by
the next summer, they're hosting pool
parties and laughing about their old
snow boots in storage. Now, this next
question is one that I know can hit you
right in the heart. And it is, will we
lose our people? And I got to be honest
with you guys, this was one of the
toughest things for us. No doubt about
it. You know, questions like, you know,
we're close to our neighbors, our
church, our gym, our school. What if we
move and never find that again? And, you
know, we can relate. The church that
Kate and I went to before we moved here,
we were there almost 6 years. Uh Kate
came to Christ in that church and it was
very difficult for us to leave. I was
part of the worship team and we just
felt like we were at home in that
congregation and that was really scary.
You know, leaving family obviously, you
know, there were tears like we said when
we left the driveway there. It was
difficult and and Tampa spread out.
There's not one downtown, so to speak. I
mean, there is a downtown Tampa, but
there are pockets of little lifestyle
clusters all over the place. And yes, it
can feel isolating if you don't know
where to look. And if we're honest with
ourselves, the scary part isn't that
you're going to lose community. It's
that you might never find one that feels
like home again. And that's why we focus
so hard on plugging our clients into
neighborhoods where their people already
exist. Young professionals walking to
brunch in West Park Village. Families
hosting culde-sac cookouts at Starky
Ranch. Empty nesters doing sunrise
paddle boarding in Safety Harbor. That
way you're not starting again from
scratch. You're stepping into a place
that was waiting for you. And if we had
to sum up all of those questions into
one, it would be this. What if this is
the wrong move? This is the one that
underlies every other fear. What if this
is all a big mistake? What if we uproot
our entire family and everything we know
and it's not what we thought it was
going to be? And let me be real with
you, no move is perfect. And to be quite
honest, the way I describe it to our
clients is it's going to be like you're
standing on jello-, right? And and if
you you could even think about that, you
know, you're going to be shaky, right?
And the way we always describe it is
this move is going to feel like you're
standing on jell-o or you're walking on
jello- and our role is to throw rocks in
it, right? That way you have some solid
footing to help you make qualified
decisions and you're going to have the
what did we do moment. It's going to
happen. But here's the truth I've seen
over and over again. The right move
doesn't always feel comfortable, but it
does feel aligned. Because let's be
real, y'all, this isn't just about palm
trees and pools. It's about stepping
into the next version of your life. And
if your current life feels too small,
too rushed, too gray, Tampa might be
exactly the place that you were meant to
be. If any of these fears hit home with
you, you're not crazy. You're just
human. Trust me, this move isn't just
about a new zip code. It's about
transformation. And here's the cool
part. You don't have to figure it out
alone. There's a link in the description
to book a Zoom call with me down below.
It'll take you to our website, ask you
just a few questions, then it will
literally take you to my calendar. We'll
walk you through the scary parts, talk
about the exciting parts, the things
that you don't want to post about on
Facebook yet. Because if you're going to
make a huge move and build something
new, let's make sure that you're doing
it on solid foundation. And YouTube's
going to put two more videos up here
that'll help you on your journey. And as
always, until next time, go out and live
that Tampa life.
