There are now 3 Philadelphia restaurants with Michelin Stars

Three Philadelphia restaurants have earned Michelin stars for their exceptional culinary excellence. >> The iconic Michelin Guide recognized restaurants at the Kimmel Center last night and our city walked away with a trio of Michelin restaurants and other big honors. Alicia Vitelli attended the event. I was texting her during it. She's here with What an honor though for these chefs. >> Unbelievable. Yes, Sarah and I had a a a text chain going throughout it because it honestly this is so thrilling. It was a huge night for Philadelphia, a Michelin star, and of course, the prestigious white coat that comes with it is the equivalent of winning an Oscar for these chef owners. Last night, that honor was bestowed upon her Play Supper Club, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Provenence. >> The team um >> the team makes it. They do make it. >> We're grateful for all of them. We are. >> Never in a million years would have thought we'd have been here ever. I've been working in Philadelphia since I was 18 and this is everything. It's amazing. >> So emotional. Now, Petra Mala, you see the owners there. That's a vegan restaurant in Northern Liberties, won the first ever Michelin Green Star in Philadelphia for sustainability. So, I just that was actually the first Philly award of the night that went out. It's really exciting. There's another category called Bib Gourmand, and this is awarded for exceptionally good food at moderate prices. So that went to Disengoth, El Shenon, Fiorella, Fourth Street Delhi, Angelos's Delisandro, and Del Rossi's three cheese steak spots, Pizzeria, Bedia, Royal Sushi, and Isizakaya and Sally. And then there's the Michelin recommended list. 21 local spots made the cut. You see them there. So many culinary gems on that stage. It was kind of like the class photo that they're taking there. I spoke with Michael Klein, the Inquirer restaurant and food scene reporter to talk about the buzz that is swirling about maybe some potential snubs. >> There were a couple of surprises on there. I mean, uh, it clearly tells me that the Michelin people were doing their homework and they weren't simply repeating every other list that's out there. I think the biggest surprise to me was John George's restaurant at the Four Seasons in Philadelphia. He wins Michelins all over the world and he was there last night and he was I think he was fully expecting to win. >> I found it fascinating that Philadelphia's only James Beard award winner was not there. >> Pila and Rachel Lauren, the owners weren't invited. It's hard to read the tea leaves. This is an outside organization that operates in total secrecy. They did not leak the list. um they don't announce they're coming. >> So um Mann by the way was Philadelphia's only winner this year for the James Beard Award. Yeah. And so the owner won emerging chef. Huge moment for uh Pilorn and Mann. They were not invited last night. So interesting to see how this process works. You know, these Michelin inspectors have been visiting Philadelphia for months undetected. And Klein suspects that maybe some people didn't get mentioned or included because they couldn't get a reservation or a seat at those restaurants. Isn't that fascinating? We have so many hot spots. >> Yeah. We've been talking about how difficult it is to get a reservation anywhere right now. >> Yes. So, it's it's fascinating to know how it happened. I mean, earning a Michelin star is is huge. So, we have three big big celebrations coming up. >> Thought the French cheese like their cheese steaks. [laughter] >> Yeah. Like, who knew? >> Three of them on that list. That's crazy. >> I know. They're probably going, "Maybe try this with Bri." [laughter] >> That's right. Not the same. >> It was.
