Yo, yo, what is up design lifers welcome back to the channel
It's jimmy and I am here to help you with your design life. Booyah. Check it. Check it. Check it. Check it
Damn, the shirt actually looks a little better after a couple of washes so that like
You know starts to get real tight start showing off the guns a little more
You know what i'm saying? Anyways guys, you can grab yourself one at designlifebrand.com
Today I want to talk to you guys about something that I didn't give a crap about when I was a student
And that was design process
And the reason is because a lot of students, uh, when we're first starting off
We kind of just want to jump into the fun stuff, you know, actually
Designing and finalizing and rendering and making things look super cool, right?
And so usually we just jump right into the solution just pop there
We're there after just a couple of sketches, but design professors what they try to teach us is you have to go through
the process to start developing
You know what you're going to end up with and so to figure out this methodology is a little more of a advanced skill
And so first you learn the technical stuff all the programs how to draw how to render
You know how to use solidworks and then you have to learn the actual industrial
Design figuring out how you come up with these solutions. And so this is really about design
Process what process do you take? What are the things that you do?
Uh in order to come up with your design
I didn't really care about this when I was a student but now as a professional now being a year out of school
Design process is like crazy crazy crazy
important I just kind of go through the process and go ahead and
Do it every single time and it gives me a awesome result
And so I want to share that with you guys not specifically my process. Uh, we can do that in another future video
I'll go through my process
I'll show you guys my inspiration folder where I just like pull great ideas pictures from all around the internet
And using those as inspiration for my own concepts. And so, uh, that should be a future video
So hit that subscribe button and also hit that bell button
So you for sure will get notified when I upload my next video
What I want to do is go ahead and you know, just jump into a couple of these, uh design consultancies
And what they usually have is a list of you know process of how they come up with their design
So if you're a customer if you're looking to get your design
Figured out and developed you would go to these design consultants and they will literally tell you know help you develop
Uh your idea into an actual physical product and so
No up front tell you, you know, these are the steps that we'll take. Let's just take a look at it
This is going to be an awesome, you know way to figure out design processes and what the actual pros do
Let's just jump right into the computer. Let's go
All right design lifers, so we're here at rks.rksdesign.com
The links should be down below if you want to check it out yourself
but this is a design consultancy that was close to cal state long beach, so we were able to
Have a field trip out there and they actually have a very very thorough
design process and they really
Map it out and show it to you guys and it's almost like a part of their uh marketing through their service. So it's kind of cool
um, and this is mainly the reason why I want to show you guys this so it can
you know, it can really open your eyes to uh,
Some of the processes that you can take and maybe add to modify your own process in order to really fine-tune and come up with
some awesome sick designs
Uh, this is specifically the section that I want to talk to you guys about and this is you know, breaking down their design
Process this is going to be the whole process very thorough
So, you know the biggest thing I have to say about this is that this is a full thorough design process in order to develop
a well
Created product right but sometimes in the real world
You're not going to have all this time and some of the projects are not that important
Sometimes they just need like mouse pad or or you know
Just it's just like a different design or something
That's really quick that only would take a day or two
And so it's rare that you would actually go through a whole industrial design process every single time
I'm gonna just read this through i've read it through already and some of the things I understand some of them
I don't so take it for what it's worth. So research
Conducting
desktop global research
Curating trends that's important
generating research
Hypotheses, so a lot of this I feel like I do myself, but
Very very quickly and I don't even think about it when i'm doing it
I just kind of do it and so it's cool that they really just list it out
Like I do look at trends and stuff like that, but I never think that i'm doing that
interviewing stakeholders
creating
stimuli
conducting co-creation sessions
creating research plan
Screening criteria and discussing plans. So this is really initial stuff probably doesn't take too long
Maybe the hypothetical concepts is really just spitballing seeing what's possible
And then just running with a couple of ideas once you're in the ideation stage. All right, so moving on to step two
synthesis
Generating insights creating go-to marketing strategies interesting
Benchmarking competition that's going to be a huge one. That's one that I do
I always look at the competition see what they're doing
And why why or not people are talking about them and the pros and cons of each one
So, um, that's a very very important one that I do and obviously when i'm going to design mine
I'm going to make sure that it looks and works way better
Okay, so developing personas maybe that's like figuring out who the client is going to be identifying customer triggers
Developing help me statements mapping opportunity zones developing customer experience journey
So this is really, you know, like nailing down and and defining what this product is going to be
A key attribute so this is going to be a shorter section here
identifying category
Attractors so
What attracts people and this is something that we do at my work is we figure out why people buy certain things
What is the main selling feature?
And then that's what we add into ours and that's what we you know, try to develop as much as possible
defining solution criteria
finding key product
attractors hero's journey lining hero's journey for key personas
defining moments of truth
Defining avenues of customer attraction engagement
and
adoption purchase
creating viral demand
So that's going to be a big one creating viral demand the big one that I figured out
What a lot of business people have been doing nowadays that i've been learning from i'm going to share with you guys
Is they just use ads they use facebook ads they use google ads instagram promotions
You guys probably see that on instagram where you can just promote
By paying a little bit of money and you can get a lot of
Eyes onto your content if that's what you want to do. And so you just pay a little bit and it's kind of like
Paying for a bigger audience that that might be interested in what you're selling
All right, so design is going to be their next one brainstorming
in
Creative immersion sessions. Okay, so brainstorming in these creative sessions as they call it
Uh ideation ideating and conceptualizing cool, so that's probably sketching
Uh creating and iterating the concepts. All right, so developing this is the heavy heavy stuff that I personally do
Development of wireframes mapping proposed solutions exploring colors materials and finishes. That's cmf guys
uh prototyping, okay pa validating of
proposed solution developing
The brain, uh, excuse me developing the brand developing elevator pitch, okay
Next one is execution developing
developing the product service
integrating partnerships
Engineering programming the product. This is really doing the technical stuff the down and dirty stuff
You know measurements and and mechanical engineering and and programming and any electronics. This is really, you know
Figuring out. How do we do this creating fast fails?
Uh iterate iterative testing and prototyping testing of beta versions cycles of design engineering
improvements debugging tooling process check and
producing
and then
uh conducting pilot studies
Pilot studies how interesting?
And ramping up production, so that's pretty cool. So this is all about really just figuring it out
How do we do this? How do we make this work? And how do we start making these things empowering the customers?
rewarding customers
creating heroic
Evangelists and generating viral demands. That's about it guys. I hope you learned something from this design process
This is really what designers do
This is how we come up with and develop the products and these are a lot of the things that we think about
So it's super cool
This is such a hack to be able to go to these websites check them out and look through their whole process and the steps
That they take obviously, there's a lot of details that go within these, you know from the day-to-day and figuring it out themselves
But it's cool to just see the steps that they're taking in order to you know
Come up with their designs and so we're gonna check out some other ones. I think this is really fun
Go ahead if you guys know of any really cool ones link me down in the comments
But I got a couple myself for the next couple videos
All right guys and check out my last video where I do a review on a bic pen the ultimate
Basic basic pen so check that out
