Kevin Jonas talks about how Nick got the Jonas Brothers back together and why Joe was hesitant about the idea.
When we originally started the conversation
about doing something again as a band,
it was going to be like,
well, how about we do like a little like reunion tour?
You know, like 30 cities, 30 shows, that's it.
Joe was very, he was the last on board with new music.
Like very bullish, like I don't want to make music again.
Maybe we'll do this, whatever, but like no new music.
Okay.
And then we were performing, we went on a trip,
which we filmed for Amazon, you know, chasing happiness.
And it was awesome.
Like it was, it was like us bonding as real brothers again.
But the moment in Cuba,
when we were sitting there playing Love Bug,
it like, I think he just remembered what it felt like
to make music again together.
And then everything changed after that.
You explain who brings that idea up first,
the idea of getting back together?
Nick brought it up to me.
Nick brought it up to me in, around Christmas time,
around the holidays.
Came to visit me and Danielle in New Jersey,
came to Christmas and he like, we were just hanging,
had the full day.
And that night he was like,
you know, I've been thinking about this.
How do you feel?
But like, kind of sheepishly he talked about it,
was like, how do you feel about doing that?
And at this time, at this point I had been like,
cool, band's done, never going to do this again.
Into doing other things, let's see what happens.
But at that point, when he brought it up again,
I was like, okay, I'm down to have the conversation.
We then, he, we then talked to Joe about it
and he's less excited, which is like,
he's like, I'm doing my dancing, I'm living my best life.
Like, I'm like, he's like doing his thing.
You know, Cake by the Ocean was like literally
everywhere after Jealous Cake.
Like, it's just tons of stuff happening for everybody.
And then we went to Mammoth.
Phil McIntyre, our manager, a long time manager,
said, okay guys, let's go to Mammoth.
We're going to spend four days together
and talk about like what this could be, if at all,
and we can make a decision one way or another.
And we left there saying we're not ready to do anything.
But he did say, I think we should film
you guys going through a process of deciding
whether or not you guys want to do this again.
We said, okay, see what happens.
You'll own it all.
Never have to see the light of day.
Let's just document this.
But I'm going to put you guys in,
I'm going to send you guys to places to do this
because Nick was, Joe was doing The Voice in Australia.
So me and Nick surprised him and flew to Australia.
We were doing things in New Jersey.
Like, it was like, we were all,
London, went to London, went to Cuba.
Like, it was a very busy travel time to do this
and see each other where, we met each other where we were.
And because of that, I think it helped us all
see each other's perspective.
What did you learn about each one of them?
I think, you know, you go through these processes,
you hang on to a lot of things.
A lot of, you can watch the documentary.
It's kind of intense.
We didn't hold any punches.
Similar to this Christmas movie, it's really funny.
That Christmas movie is so funny.
But like, you know, in that moment,
Joe says in Australia, he's like, yeah, me and Nick thought,
like, at least he said, it's like,
I felt like you were holding me back.
Like, he says that straight up and I was like, okay.
Whoa, it's a punch to take, you know?
Well, I took it and we still got through it.
But that's brothers, right?
What does it mean to you today, though?
I think it's just, I think it was a challenge, actually,
in that moment to be great and to be focused.
And I think at the same time,
he also then immediately out of context,
you don't realize, but like he says right after that,
he's like, but I also didn't understand,
like, your focus was on something else
that was more important, which is your wife and your family.
And I wasn't there and I didn't understand that.
And I'm sorry.
Like, he was very clear about it, right?
He's like, I just, I couldn't put myself there.
But like, yeah, we all have a,
none of us had balance back then.
It was either like the band or nothing, right?
So like, I was the first to go,
I'm gonna go do this other thing for a minute.
And I think it was important
and wasn't always met with great understanding.
But now I think everyone looks back
on every one of these decisions,
Nick doing the administration or wanting to go solo
or breaking up the band.
It's like, thank God it happened.
It all benefited everybody.
It all benefited everything, right?
Like, and thank God he broke the band off
because I think we would have been a joke
if we would have kept going.
Honestly.
Weirdly, I think you're 100% correct.
I know we are.
Like, we had to go live a little bit of life
and he thinks, could it have been handled maybe better?
Sure, in the moment, duh.
Like, but we're children
and we don't know what we're doing.
We're not emotionally qualified to handle like,
I'm what, 24, five, 26, maybe?
I don't even remember.
And I'm like having to deal with like many employees,
millions of dollars in like potential like loss
of tours being canceled and like just like everything
and then just having to make a decision in the moment.
Like, you don't know what you're doing.
Remember, we're kids from New Jersey
that made some music and got really lucky.
I think we're pretty good at what we do,
but like, it still takes like lightning strength, you know?
And sometimes there's no school for this.
I always say this to actors, like early actors
and like people that are like,
yeah, like, so what would you give advice for kids
that like want to like start in the business?
I'd be like, dude, find somebody that's been on set
and ask them how to act on set.
Not like in the movie.
No one teaches you what it's like to just show up on set.
This is your call time.
This is what this means.
By the way, don't do this, do this.
You know, like, you don't know.
It's like, it's a complete and total weird world
we live in out here in California.
No, you learn as you go and you have to fake it
till you make it.
Completely.
Very weird.
