Okay this is the bowl I'm going to be throwing in the next video. You can see it on the right.
Here I'm centering the clay. It's about a five pound ball of clay. I just kind of roughly center
it before I actually center it and wet it down and pull it up and down a couple of times.
Get it nice and smooth there and start to open it up a little bit here. Again this is a five
pound ball of clay. You can see the bowl on the right so it's not it doesn't have a super large
base but it'll spread out quite a bit at the top. So when I do the pull I have to leave a little clay
at the top because it's going to have to open up quite a bit. Here I'm compressing down the base of
the bowl. Leave it a nice curve on it. I'm just verifying or double checking the thickness of
the base. Don't always do that but just want to make sure on a piece like this. Doing a first
pull on it here. Second pull. It feels nice and centered. Don't feel any air bubbles or anything
in it. Packing it down again. I'm working on that little edge on the inside for the base to the
wall. Nice little curve there. So I'm pulling it up and opening it up a little bit more.
Doing another pull and again I'm going to open it up a little bit more at the top.
It's getting a little bit wider. As you can see I'm going to leave a little bit of clay again at
the top. Kind of like a bead around the top rim. Here I am standing up when I'm doing the pull on
it. I don't always do that but sometimes I just feel good standing up and pulling.
Looking straight down on the piece when I do the pull. Make sure my hands stay together.
When I do the pull on that as much as I can I have the hands contacting one another to give me
the idea how far apart they are. Up and down and away from one another. Inside and outside.
Here I'm using the rib to kind of compress the outside edge with the sponge on the inside.
Now I'm just doing a little bit of a touch up on the rim of the bowl. Just an initial
just kind of rounding it off. Working a little bit on the wall here. Still leaving a little
bit of a bead at the top for the rim of the bowl. Rounding it off there. Now I'm going to bring out
my special spoon. Use that spoon to leave a nice little curve transition from the wall to the flare.
Again I'm using the rib on the outside there now to just kind of smooth out that outer edge.
Not pushing too hard on the inside. Just sort of smoothing the outside.
Touching up the base on the inside here again. This piece is nearly done with the throwing. I'm
just cleaning up a few surfaces and edges. After this it'll be allowed to go to leather hard.
It'll be stained with a black oxide stain which will turn black when it's fired later.
After it's been stained and relief carved then it'll be bisque fired.
Then after the bisque fired it will be stained with a semi-transparent glaze
to allow me to see the pattern. And then it'll be fired again in my scup kiln the cone six.
