Near Potes in the heart of the Liébana region
dden in the mountains of Viorna in the foothills of
the Picos de Europa lies the Monastery of Santo Toribio
which was inhabited by Benedictine monks throughout its history
And it has been occupied since 1960 by a small community of Franciscans
It dates back to the Visigothic period in the 6th
century becoming part of the history of book arts
because here in the 6th century the blessed monk composed his works
among which the commentaries on the Apocalypse of Saint John stand out
Within it alongside its texts are illustrations and miniatures
The 24 illustrated codices that have survived to our time
Due to their subject matter and technique they form the foundation for
the development of Mozarabic and Romanesque painting and sculpture
In the eighth century it was an important monastery
during the reign of Alfonso I in the Kingdom of Asturias
when the relic of the Holy Cross was moved there
the largest known fragment of the True Cross
at Bishop Toribio of Astorga brought from his pilgrimage to the Holy Land
There was a custom undoubtedly stemming from the practice of the Great Bible
o scatter splinters and bits of sugarcane
wood so they could take them home
A small piece of sugar with splinters
Well then splinter by splinter
they realize the firewood is steadily dwindling
And it's also smaller since it's logical right
So how do they solve the problem of the splinters being all used up
What they do is cut or shape the single
piece of wood they have into a cross
Slide it into that golden fruit
cross cover it with glass and seal it
But in the lower vertical section
there's a small square window-like opening
left unshielded by glass or anything else by the monks
so that it may be venerated touched
or kissed—directly the wood of the
Cross According to Father Sandoval chronicler of the Benedictine Order
The relic is the left arm of the Holy Cross It
is closed and positioned in the form of a cross
leaving the sacred hole intact where Christ's hand was
pierced embedded within a golden Gothic-style cross
Completed in 1679
It is the largest surviving relic of the Cross of Christ
In 1512 Pope Julius II granted by bull
the celebration of the Levantine Jubilee
with plenary indulgence granted for the years
in which April 16 Saint Toribio falls on a Sunday
extending the grace to the seven days following the feast
To accomplish this the Gate of Forgiveness was built
which opens during the jubilee year
The current building dates from 1256 representing a series of successive
construction campaigns
carried out over the centuries
Although the structure has been remodeled several times it must have replaced an
earlier pre-Romanesque or Romanesque building
or one in the Asturian or Mozarabic style
The pointed arches of the atrium lead
to the 17th-century cloister designed
in the Herrerian style At the entrance stands a relief of Jesus Sotero
which represents the Blessed One on his desk
It is a structure with simple forms
a square plan and four arches with semi-circular profiles
supported by square-section pillars
with windows of simple understated shapes
Currently hosting an exhibition in the form of miniatures
on interpretations of the apocalypse
On the southern facade are two entrances
The larger one is the main entrance
a pointed arch surrounded by moldings
supported by capitals symbolizing the sacraments
To the right is the Door of Forgiveness
which opens only during the jubilee
It features a solid bell tower above the choir
The church follows the guidelines of
Cistercian-influenced monastic Gothic
featuring clear lines and open spaces
along with decorative simplicity
It has a three-apse polygonal façade and a three-aisle body
with the central aisle wider
and taller than the side aisles
They are covered by four sections of
ribbed vaulting some with reinforcing ribs
Its decoration focuses on the capitals particularly those of
the major apse featuring carvings
of human heads and arabesques
The bull and the bear according to legend
helped Saint Toribio in its construction
In one chapel is venerated the 16th-century image of the Virgin
of the Angels and in another the
recumbent statue of Saint Toribio
crafted from oak wood in Burgos
with the original polygonal
shape the central apse features Gothic-style windows
In the western transept
beneath the church rises a
tower above the choir
covered with a ribbed vault
On the western side of the Gothic church was built
the Capilla del Indum Crucis
in the early 18th century
following the aesthetic of Baroque
His patron was the inquisitor of Madrid
and archbishop of Santa Fe de Bogotá in Colombia
Francisco Gómez de Otero y Cosío whose
praying statue stands beside the altar
The chapel has a rectangular layout with
three sections the central one features
a high-quality dome resting on pendentives
where the evangelists are depicted
amid garlands and little love hearts
symbols that with the signs of passio
For heraldic reasons the motif is repeated in the lantern
The chapel housing the Indum
Crucis dates from 1705 and
features various sculptures of
apostles and saints in its niches
Along with Jerusalem Rome
the Monastery of Santo Toribio
as the privilege of celebrating
the jubilee year
being one of the major pilgrimage centers throughout history
and one of the treasures
that Cantabria is proud of
