It has been noted in certain cases that individuals convicted of serious sexual assaults are not being deported
How do you see this and what changes would you like
to see Yes that's correct and it's truly shocking
Oh we're about to move forward shortly with entirely new Swedish legislation
As I see it this will mean we end up with
the strictest rules in the entire Nordic region regarding criminal deportations
This means that any offense
carrying a penalty stricter than a fine must result in deportation
Moreover there are now international
conventions that limit our options
Yes it's both the European Convention on Human
Rights and in certain cases the UN Refugee Convention
Well we've already stated from the government's side
that we want to begin working on it try to gather support
ot only within the EU but also
beyond to transform these conventions
They wouldn’t have looked anything like this if they’d been written
today And of course it’s problematic that one can’t deport them
A rapist who has destroyed the life of his victim
simply because the person has a status declaration
How much international support
do you have
for changing these conventions Well we'll have to wait and see
I'll say that when it comes to the refugee
convention it really means we're putting on a Swedish leadership jersey here
I don't know of any country that's
actually pursuing this but I believe I know
that there are other countries that have faced similar issues
We'll start by reaching out to our Nordic neighbors then
expand to the EU circle and
work our way forward from there
Because we cannot afford to look at outdated
conventions that were written over 70 years ago
prevents us from deporting dangerous individuals
who have committed serious sexual offenses
