The checkout and comparison of a Fabulous Home (Atrocious Workplace) branded version of the Lakewood Kool Operator Junior. It's an interesting combination of parts, some are identical, others appear original. It's overall not a very good unit, it's very loud with limited air flow.
Atrocious workplace. This is a probably horrible imitation of...
Oh my gosh, that feels terrible. I can hear it already.
...of the Lakewood Hot Failing Junior, which I don't think was a very good band to begin with,
and a lot of these imitations are just as bad or worse. This has horrible,
horrible height adjustment. Definitely fabulous. I'm like, piece of crap, home.
Let's see if it says what the OEM is on this thing.
AYT 8.
0.6 amps, so this is horrifically inefficient. It probably has a stupid
C-frame shitted pull motor.
2021?
Yeah, it's recent.
Wow.
I'm surprised this design is still around. This is, at this point, a very, very old design.
It's model KYT-8, and it's considered an 8-inch compact fan.
And the customer service is service at raginti.com,
but there's otherwise no indication of what the OEM is.
It's Lakewood.
It's Cam-Air or whatever the heck Lakewood turned into or blew out the patents.
Oh, it went to a whole bunch of companies, I think.
Yeah. So a bunch of these surfaced in, how was it, late 2010s under the
West Bend or Eastern Straighten Out brand, and they were prison fans. They were the clear ones.
And I don't know if those were, like, government purchase surplus or whatever,
how they made it out into the public, but those went around for a while,
and those were a fairly recent make as well.
So this design is one of those ones that's been on the market for a decade or two,
and it's apparently probably still in the manufacturer to this day.
I don't think it's a very good one. I think it's an aerodynamics disaster.
It's very noisy and doesn't move a whole lot of air.
This one looks like it's just as bad as all the others.
It does have a little C-frame shaded flow motor. I think the West Bend at least had a PSC motor.
There's the information on the motor.
Now let's plug this thing in and see how it works.
No mounting holes for...
Actually, it looks like there might have been something that was supposed to be screwed in
there. I don't know. It does have the fused plug. The plug has a fused plug.
Oh, that's not me.
Yep, just as I suspected. Complete fail.
So aside from the tilt mechanism being atrocious, it doesn't move any air.
Do you feel any airflow?
I do, actually. It's very, very light.
It's pathetic.
It's one of those ones where it's garbage airflow, but it kind of carries for whatever that's worth.
That's wasting 21.9 watts to do practically nothing.
And it's loud, too.
Yeah, it's too loud for the air. It's moving some air, but it's too loud for it.
Oh, actually, you're right. It is moving more than I was expecting.
That's a good assessment. It's very weak, but it carries.
I don't know how. It's such an aerodynamics disaster.
And that's kind of what I find the KOO operator to do, too.
Yeah, very weak stream.
That's about six right up close.
But then if you go just a couple inches away, it deteriorates to four.
And now let's see how far.
Now it's about three.
So it deteriorates rapidly right away, and then it deteriorates slowly as you go further back.
Which is kind of interesting.
Back here, I'm still getting two, which is not a lot of air, but it's something.
I'll see if we can get a measurement on the RPMs.
Probably have to take the guard off, I think, for this.
The guard is probably too dense.
Oh, I did get a reading there.
Eight, five, four, two.
Two divided by five.
At the 1,708 RPM on low, which is very, very fast.
Oh, what is the power factor?
63.
Typical shaded pole junk.
It amazes me that fans like this are still allowed to be sold
with these shaded pole motors.
They're so horrifically inefficient.
Now, that's not nearly as much of a speed jump as the...
Well, maybe it is, but it just takes forever to get there, unlike the Lakewood.
There's not as good of a variance in speed as the Lakewood.
Yep, it doesn't go as fast.
It doesn't sound like.
That's 9804 divided by five.
That's 1,960 RPM, so it's only a less than 300 RPM difference.
And we have .34 amp, 24.9 watt, 63%.
Says the same thing in low and medium.
This shut off because it was moving so little air.
About five, three and a half, three.
So there's a slight increase in the airflow.
The bearings are a little red.
Table's shaking now.
A lot of vibration.
I can't really tell if it's necessarily out of balance or just vibrating.
Yeah, I guess it's probably out of balance.
So that is wasting .4 of the amps, 29 of the watts, with a power factor of .62.
So the power factor got even worse on that.
That's 2,195 RPM.
This is a pretty cool gadget.
I like this.
It works very, very well.
I didn't expect it to.
It's unassuming.
Five and a half, five, three.
Okay, so it's not as bad as I was expecting it to be,
but it's definitely an aerodynamics fail.
Yeah, as all of them are.
Too many blades in there.
Too many blades, and I think the guard is too dense,
and there's not enough pitch to the blades.
I will say this one is a lot quieter than the Eastern Straighten Out one was.
That was obnoxiously loud, if I recall incorrectly.
There's still not a lot of air for the noise, but it's not as bad.
There's too much turbulence over here, like you said.
I can't really tell if it's pushing the air that far.
I think I can kind of feel something over here that mixes with the hot air.
So it's not awful.
It's not unusable, but it's definitely very loud for the air it moves.
There's better options out there for sure.
Not fabulous.
And of course, the tilt adjustment thing is just an abomination.
An abomination.
You can tell by how long it took to spin down initially
that the blades are not grabbing a lot of air.
Spin down time is surprisingly decent.
Well, actually it slowed down real quick at the end there.
Usually it's the opposite.
It takes a longer time to spin down at the end.
That's still pretty good for something that probably was never serviced
and likely shipped with an inadequate amount of lubrication from the factory.
Well, I guess the next test is we'll have to get Kevin to listen to it
and see how...
Oh, actually no, we don't have to do that.
He can sit at home and watch TV.
I have one.
We can compare it while he's watching TV.
I was looking for the eastern one, but I thought it was over there, but it was not.
Oh, that's what you were doing?
Yeah.
I'm not sure where that is.
I would have gladly had Kevin come and compare it in person, but he's watching TV.
Anyways, what a shame.
He could have seen the high pressure sodium street lights out in the snow too,
which I know is something he also really likes.
All right, so this one also has a shaded coil motor, but these did exist in PSC versions.
And wow, this is strikingly similar when you look at them up close.
The only thing that appears to be different is the guard.
Even the back of the motors is like almost identical.
That's kind of crazy.
I actually was not...
I did not pick up on that right away that the guard is in fact different on this one.
This is probably a little better from an aerodynamics perspective.
Yeah, the whole thing is a lot more open.
That is a ridiculous amount of noise compared to the atrocious home, but it is more powerful.
It's moving air, yep.
Does it carry like the fabulous home?
Not quite, not as much, I don't think.
Well, I do feel it with the heater, so I didn't feel the other one with the heater.
This definitely is pushing a significantly stronger breeze.
Yeah, that's 11 versus 5, so it's a lot stronger.
I'm still getting 9 back here.
The stupid camera's right where it is blowing.
Yeah, 6.
So this is a better fan.
Actually, this is not as...
Admittedly, this is not as bad as I remember it being.
Yeah.
It is pushing an okay amount of air.
But there's definitely, again, much quieter options out there.
Spinning much faster, it's got to be.
Yeah, this one is 2,252 RPM versus 1,960, so it is running a fair bit faster.
And this blade seems to have more pitch.
Now, this is also consuming way more power.
This is .83 the amps, 56.2 the watts, the power factor is .58.
So this is almost twice...
No, more than twice the power consumption.
That's almost three times the power consumption.
So this is even probably less efficient than the other one is.
Much better range and speeds.
1,675 RPM, still nine miles per hour up close.
About six from a couple feet away.
About four from where the camera is.
Yeah, that one's diminishing faster.
It is.
So the two, although they look very similar, they're very different aerodynamically.
I'm surprised.
I would have expected this guard to be a lot better.
Yeah, there's something about the horrible guard designs
where air tends to carry out of them more.
It's very strange.
That's .53 the amps, 39.4 the watts, and the power factor is .64.
So it's still using more power.
And this is what Kevin likes to use for sleeping.
It does have a pleasant sound to it.
I'll give it that much.
Yeah, I could see why he uses these.
It does have a nice sound.
Do you like the sound of it?
I can barely hear it, actually, over the...
I probably would need something a little bit louder.
It is very quiet.
That's 1,102 RPM.
And we can kind of go back and look at the history of this, which is convenient.
The other one was much slower.
That was 1,142 on low versus...
Oh no, it was only about the same.
1,102 on this versus 1,142.
So within 40 RPM, so a very similar speed on low.
This is eating up .28 amps, which I think is more than the other one on high.
So this is just horrifically inefficient.
I can't imagine what Kevin's light bill is on this thing every night, all night.
22.3 the watts with a power factor of .67.
So power factor is a little better, but the power consumption is way more.
About 6 right up close and 3.3 back here.
Sorry, 2.1.9 by the camera.
Okay, it's not as bad as I remember it, but it's definitely disappointing compared to
other units like the Honeywell Turbofan, I think is a lot better.
It's much quieter, more powerful, uses less power.
That one's still a fail, but this is not as bad as I recall.
And Kevin serviced this before he gave it to me, so the spin down should be decent.
Yeah, it's pretty good.
Any other commentary on these things?
Uh, no, I think everything's been said.
Okay.
