Top state health officials are reporting six pediatric deaths
related to influenza this season.
22 News reporter Christina DeMores
joins us live in studio after speaking
with local medical experts about how severe
the flu is in our region.
That's right, and last season there were nearly 500 deaths
here in Massachusetts related to the flu.
Massachusetts health officials are reporting
six pediatric deaths this flu season.
According to the state's Department of Public Health
Influenza update, as of February 5th,
there have also been 228 adult flu deaths.
The deadliest week so far was December 28th
through January 3rd, with a total of 51 deaths
across the state.
This time of year, with the winter, the cold weathers,
the snow, we're in crowded locations, huddled spaces.
Most people are staying indoors.
So all these put us at a risk for acquiring
or getting these respiratory type of viruses.
State data show hospitals are seeing an overall decrease
in patients seeking care for the respiratory illness.
But health officials warn of a mutated flu strain
known as subclade K that drove up cases overseas
and caused very high influenza-like activity
in Massachusetts last year.
Now, is there anything concerning about this flu season?
You know, all viruses tend to mutate with time.
Different strains develop, as we saw very, very candidly
with COVID.
So strains do mutate and change over time.
So we have to kind of adapt with that.
And while flu activity seems to be starting
to decrease, health professionals are still urging residents
to take precautions as the season continues,
from proper hygiene to getting vaccinated,
which they say is your best line of defense.
And if you have been recently sick with the flu,
health experts advise waiting a couple weeks
until you are completely recovered
before getting vaccinated.
Working for you tonight, Christina DeMoras, 22 News.
