Significant snow accumulation this winter has led to the formation of ice dams on roofs, creating the risk of water damage and expensive home repairs.
Well, we've had quite a bit of snow this winter, and a lot of that snow has
built up on people's roofs. Yours included. Yeah, don't remind me. 22 new
storm team meteorologist Adam Trumka was working for you with how the water
from the melting snow and ice could make it into your home. Yeah, that's
right. Nick and CR. It's a problem. A lot of people are talking about right
now. If an ice dam forms on your roof, you could end up with some costly
repairs. We've had quite a bit of cold and snowy weather this winter, and a
lot of that snow and ice has built up on roofs and in gutters, and that can
lead to ice dams. Ice dams form when snow and ice build up on your roof.
Warmer temperatures, along with the heat in your home, melts the snow on the roof.
The melted snow then collects at the end of your roof and refreezes. The ice can
build back up into your roof and shingles, forming the dam. Water on the
roof can back up behind the dam, and that water can flow under the shingles and
into your home. There are some things you can get to help remove the snow and
ice from your roof. There's calcium chloride pucks and calcium chloride that
they put in it to the socks that won't hurt their asphalt shingles and melts
the ice properly. Things like roof melt and roof de-icing kits can help melt
the ice on your roof, and you can also get a snow rake to remove the snow off
your roof. And before you head to the hardware store, you should call and
check to see if they have any of these things in stock, because demand has been
very high recently because of the ice dams that we're dealing with out there
right now. Working for you, I'm 22 News Storm Team Meteorologist Adam Stremko.
