Good afternoon, everyone,
and welcome to 22 News at 4. I'm Ciara Speller.
We're going to have your top four at four in just a moment.
But first, let's have a look at your commuter traffic
and weather with meteorologist Adam Stremko.
Adam, another gorgeous day out there, almost forgetting it's November.
Yeah, unbelievably warm out there with temperatures
that are well up to the 70s on November 4th.
Here's a look at our traffic out there right now.
For the most part, traffic moving fairly smoothly.
You get your usual slowdowns, 91 in Springfield, Longmeadow Curve,
getting on to 291 and 391, some slowdowns that way as well.
And Route 5 up towards Holyoke, some slowdowns, Route 202 going on.
Towards Holyoke, some slowdowns there, and Route 20, a few slowdowns.
Otherwise, things aren't too bad out there right now
this afternoon, but it is warm.
Look at these temperatures.
In fact, this is a new record.
We broke the old record of 76 set back in 1987 and 1994.
77 degrees, high temperature at Westover.
77 Westfield as well, 75 in Northampton,
75 in Greenfield, 72 Pittsfield, 73 in Great Barrington.
Mild weather is going to continue,
but we are tracking some much-needed rain.
We'll show that to you in just a couple minutes, Ciara.
In Springfield, one person was hospitalized after a crash between a car
and a motorcycle late last night.
According to the Springfield Fire Department, it happened just
before 11 p.m. at the intersection of Dwight and Lyman Streets.
One person involved was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
No other information about the crash has been released.
And five people are without a home following
a two alarm fire in Orange last night.
Multiple crews were dispatched to 236 Packard Road at around 9:40 PM.
When they got there, they saw a significant fire in the back
of the home and residents were reportedly trapped inside
the home's rural location and lack of steady water supply.
Made putting out the fire difficult at one point,
crews had to leave the building,
but they did bring the fire under control, clearing the scene by 2 a.m.
One resident was taken to the hospital and a dog did not survive.
A preliminary investigation found an unattended outdoor fire
on the property spread to a nearby small shed and then to the home.
They also found the home did not have functioning smoke alarms.
22 News is working for you with a cone zone alert.
Parts of the westbound side of the Mass Pike will
be closed tomorrow in Beckett and Lee for tree trimming.
MassDOT says work will take place between 7
a.m. and 3.30 p.m. from mile marker 14.8 to mile marker 12.
There will be signs and law enforcement helping drivers navigate
the area. Drivers should use caution, reduce speed and expect delays.
Work is weather dependent.
22 News is your local election headquarters. The midterm election shows
that Massachusetts is keeping the slate of Democratic officials.
Governor Maura Healey and Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll
were reelected after claiming support of 63% of voters.
Officials report that Attorney General Andrea Campbell
was also reelected over Republican challenger Michael Walsh.
Early this morning, Treasurer Deborah Goldberg
is projected to win against Republican Elizabeth Dayan.
The new terms for the reelected
officials begin in January.
And now let's have another check of the forecast as you were saying,
record-breaking temps out there.
Yes, in the low to mid 70s and upper 70s in some spots made it up
to 77 degrees and we are seeing lots of sunshine out there,
but that's about to change.
We're finally going to see some much-needed rain,
but if we head through this evening, mostly clear skies.
It's going to be a mild night tonight.
Temperatures will be dropping down in the 50s.
After midnight, though, we start to see the clouds work
on in and then you can see even tomorrow morning,
we may start to see a few showers around,
especially as we head late morning, early afternoon.
That's our best chance to see some showers moving on through
and then there's the chance
for a few scattered showers tomorrow afternoon as well.
Another round of some heavier showers works in for tomorrow night.
You can see right at midnight could be some downpours
and that may continue into the morning hours on Friday.
Otherwise, lots of clouds around on Friday.
Temperatures still on the mild side the next couple of days,
but as we head into the weekend, Sierra,
we're going to be tracking some much cooler air.
Trending today, Holyoke Medical Center
is expanding its orthopedic services by adding
a new surgeon. The center is opening a new office
in East Longmeadow as well. Dr. Benjamin Snyder
is joining the HMC Orthopedic Center team
and has been serving patients in the region
for over seven years. The expansion
of the program provides convenient and accessible
care to residents. The new location
in East Longmeadow is accepting new patients.
Tonight's Powerball jackpot will be one of the largest ever.
The estimated jackpot for the current drawing is $835 million,
making it the 10th largest jackpot of all time if won.
Powerball said this jackpot cycle also holds significance because it
is the first in which players in the United Kingdom have contributed
to the prize pool from the beginning of the run.
Powerball officially launched in the U.K. in July.
U.S. winners can choose the lump sum cash payout option
of $357.9 million or the $835 million total paid
in 30 increasing payments over 29 years. Both totals are before taxes.
All right, let's have a look at what we're working
on for 22 News starting at 5.
Our coverage on the midterm election continues this evening.
We'll tell you what yesterday's results mean for western Massachusetts.
Plus, we'll tell you what we know about an alleged case
of voter fraud just across the state line in Connecticut.
And we'll take a closer look at an ordinance calling
for the removal of Flock cameras in the city of Springfield.
Last look at traffic, and not too many issues out there.
Typical slowdowns, though, 91,
Springfield area, Longmeadow, the curve area,
also getting on to 291 and 391, some slowdowns there as well,
and into West Springfield, some slowdowns.
Route 20 got some slowdowns in downtown Westfield,
or along Route 20 out towards Ludlow,
but overall, not too bad out there, Ciara.
