If we only had 5 minutes with most golfers, this is where I’d start.
Over 25+ years of coaching, we’ve seen the same pattern again and again, golfers struggling with their driver not because of their swing, but because of something far simpler.
In this video, we break down the one setup change that can instantly improve:
-Shoulder alignment
-Tilt
-Strike quality
-Attack angle
-Swing path
Nothing complicated.
Nothing technical overload.
Just one change that makes the driver swing easier.
If you’ve been fighting your driver, this could be the reset you need.
If we only had five minutes with most golfers with their driver there's one
thing that we'd change and it's not their golf swing. And after
delivering literally thousands of golf lessons we see patterns and common
mistakes that golfers are making. And often golfers know how to get the
setup right with the driver, wide stance, ball forward,
but this quietly puts them in trouble. In this video we're going to share with you
one simple change that makes everything with the driver feel way easier.
Now you know that the driver is a specialist golf club, it's about getting
Obviously we're on control but we know that we're teeing the golf ball up and
we're looking to hit that golf ball on the way up. We're not doing that
with any other club in the bag. You also know
in order to do that we need a wide stance and we need the golf ball further
forward. But we've been coaching for nearly 30
years and we're seeing a lot of golfers unfortunately getting this wrong. They
get into this position here where they have the nice wide stance
and the ball is forward but they'll do this. They'll reach for the golf ball so
they're kind of looking at it and it looks like it's a long way away from
there. They're reaching for it which means as
we can see shoulders very much open. And golfers
aren't necessarily aware of this. They think they're in a good position and
look Pierce is exaggerating. It's exaggerated this is.
But notice what's happening here. The shoulders and
the forearms are way left here. What we often like to do when we're coaching
somebody is to draw a box around the body
and we'll often see when someone's in a poor setup they're too close to this
side of the box. Which means there's sometimes a little
bit of weight on this lead leg. The shoulders and the tilts of the spine are
also the wrong way that we want for a driver.
And this leads then to really a knock-on effect in the golf swing
Pierce doesn't it? I mean we're going to see all sorts of bad things happen. You're
probably aware what is going to happen from here but the direction the club is
going to swing in is going to be very poor from here. We'll often find that
golfers don't really get behind the golf ball well from here.
And even if they do they're more likely to swing the club down
so it means that our club path is going to be a lot to the left.
It means our attack angle is going to be very steep. We're going to lose distance
and we're probably going to slice it out to the right when we do this. It's
amazing how important this is and how much it actually changes
impacts. And we've got full swing here. We're going to show you how
impactful this is here. Pierce just hit a shot
doing this and what we'll do is we'll just take a look at some of the numbers
and then we'll show you guys one thing that Pierce is doing that we coach that
we that we get the majority of you guys to do. And the good thing is it actually
can do it really quickly as well can't you? So from here again I'm not going to
exaggerate it as much but I am going to go open. I am going to have the weight
left. Let's hit a shot. Okay there's that slice. We could be in a
bit of trouble there. That's a cart path ball. Let's just take a look at the
numbers on this here. So if we have a look at first of all 212. That's gone a
long way for you. 212 yards. I've been in the gym Andy. 2.2 degrees attack
angle. We have the club path 3.5 degrees left. And that's on the way down as
well. So that angle there is on the way down and as you say club path is very
much to the left. 3.5 left there. So that's what we don't want. We'd ideally
to get the maximum distance. We want to be having an attack angle that's up
and we don't really necessarily for you Pierce want to see that path
that far left either. No. We'd like to see a bit more neutral. For sure. So let's
show you what we would do if we only had five minutes with you
to help you improve your driving. Now if this is helpful then make sure you hit

improve your game and leave us any comments down in the comment section
below. Pierce this is something that you've been doing for a while now. Three
years I reckon. And I think you introduced this to your students because
it had success with you. Let's talk through this. Well as you said and as I
said earlier we've seen so many golfers fall into the same pattern. So there's
got to be something real simple that can actually really help with this. So it
just so happens a golf ball box. I always have one of these in my pocket when I'm
golfing. It's always a good idea for me. But ultimately we're just going to drop
that golf ball box down there to the side of the golf ball. Now instead of
addressing the golf ball we're going to address the golf ball box instead. So the
ball is still forward. I've still got my wide stance but as I put my hands on the
golf club now it's a lot easier for my alignments to be a lot more where I want
them. Let's just exaggerate this. If we went and put the golf club over here
back the shoulders are now closed. The weight's more back here. We've got more
tilt but obviously this is too much. So all this does by placing it here it just
aligns everything exactly how we want it. So I'm just going to drop this here. You
can see Piers's forearms and shoulders are now parallel to his feet and his
hips. If we draw that box around Piers now, Piers doesn't have any trouble with
this. He's always closer to the right side of the box which means his head's
further behind the golf ball. He is now ready behind the golf ball. Nothing else
changes but everything else improves because of this one setup change. It's
and I've taught golfers this who are 15 years of age and 72 years of age so it
didn't really matter if they are doing this in their setup and I want to get
them behind then this is exactly where I get them. And then from here just make
sure you've got slightly more weight on this back leg. So just get a little bit
more weight on this back leg. This will allow you now to look at the back of the
golf ball and you can see as Andy said my alignments are good but I'm very much
tilted up in the air. Now as I hit a golf shot from here it's going to be so much
easier for my club to swing down on a plane which is a lot more neutral which
is great and I can definitely have more chance now of hitting that golf ball on
the way up. So when I hit a shot in a moment my club path numbers should go
more neutral and my attack angle it has to go up from here. So if you're somebody
who swings over the top and a path that's left this is the first place to
start. Do this drill and I guarantee if you are somebody who does what Piers
demonstrated earlier you're going to see a big difference here and we'll show you
the numbers when you hit this shot. And the theme of this video don't forget is
do this for five minutes. The amount of golf lessons or the opportunities where
we've only had five minutes to fix somebody because of an event we're at
this is one of the go-to things that we'll do. Ball position can change pretty
much everything in the golf shot not the golf swing in the golf shot. I am teeing
it higher because as soon as I get behind and have that gap there it's a
little bit easier to hit low on the club so I just want to make sure I'm teeing
as high as I can. There's that gap there behind the golf ball well it's
definitely gone further. Take a look at these numbers now first one let's look
at the attack angle 6.1 up obviously Piers is really working hard on that one.
Club path now is 2.1 degrees to the right carried it 264 and spin right there 2169.
That shows you the difference of that one simple thing changes nothing else
changes but everything else improves. We hope that helps. Now if you're like most
golfers who come to us for coaching they're guessing on what to work on and
often working at the wrong things. We created a coaching plan for every
single part of your game so you don't have to guess on what to work on.
We coach you through step by step and completely take out the guesswork so if
you've had enough of guessing what to work on check out our coaching plans the
link is down in the description and we'll see in the next video.
