Hey gang, welcome back to Timber Town. It's actually been a few months since Jason and I
have actually been able to work on the mill as we've been finishing the carriage house,
but today, today we are starting to mill the big giant logs that we need for our timber frame barn
up at the lodge site. So here's what we got for us today is we're going to be milling
these 20 foot long pin oaks that we're going to hopefully use with the floor structure
in the barn that we're getting ready to do. So we start with the big ones first
and uh and then we'll work our way down, but today we've got a nice beautiful log for you to see.
These are beefy Dan. They're beefy buddy.
It's gonna need both of us. Let's dig in. Let's dig in.
So here's what we're cutting with today is actually a carbide blade and this is a smaller
version of a carbide blade. It is an inch and a quarter wide by 0.42. So it's the exact same
size blade that you would just get standard from uh any of your normal shops honestly. So
you can see right here they have very small welded carbide tips on each one of these. So
we're actually going to be testing out a bunch of different brands. This actually happens to be
five dollars. The carbide multi-tip and there you go inch and a quarter 0.42.
We're going to see how this cuts today on some pillows. I'm excited to get back on the mill man.
Me too buddy. Let's do this thing. Let's hook this baby up. Okay guys you can see we've almost
maxed out the uh HM130 uh max here with this giant log. I can tell you it was heavy. I don't exactly
know what the weight of it was but we'll figure that out for you. But you can see we specifically
look at this beam. Look at the end grain. Look at everything. There's not a branch in this thing.
This is going to make a beautiful beautiful beam. No knots. So that's what we're doing. We start off
with the biggest logs. The biggest things that we need. First we need the floor system. So that's
what we're doing. I'm going to cut this big boy up for you and we'll show you a couple of tricks
that we've got going on. Okay guys today we're actually running a new carbide blade. Now we
haven't tried this but right now we've got a bunch of carbide blades. We're going to try them all
on all the lumber that we're going to be sawing because right after this pin oak
we're going to be chasing these giant red oaks. So they're going to be blade tested my friends.
The people over at Woodland Mills are sending Jay a Christmas gift. This year he's got himself the
power left. No more cranking. So we're going to find out some other uses for Jay's arm here.
That was a really good Christmas present. It was a good Christmas present. Can't wait.
The other good Christmas present that I got was a was a gorgeous instrument laser and Jay
and I have been putting this to test along with a bunch of the other ones to find out which is the
best laser. Right now I can just tell you I'm leaning towards what we got going on right now
but we're going to beat it through this oak and see how she lasts. I love the laser. So
how we use our laser to level out the cliff is actually we just put our blade exactly dead
center of the cliff that we have here. One of the perfect uses for this laser as you're lining up
your cut. Oh we can see all the way down here where the laser is. So if you can't actually see
it on your log on a sunny day. So honestly we are two inches off on the way the cliff is sitting
right now from here to here. So we're trying to level our cliff but we're actually going to raise
the front and then we're going to start making our cut.
So that's one way to use the laser. The other way is hey it might remind you.
Don't chop a lay on the post. Look at this poor guy. Look at this guy.
We didn't even use the carbide blade on that one but Jay got right through it.
Guys on these small mills you don't have a debarker and I hear a lot of chatter about guys
not wanting to cut through the bark because it dulls your blade.
And this laser actually will help you uh guide what you gotta do.
That's pretty cool. Not that big a deal guys. I know it adds an extra step but hey you might
not get the blade. I'm gonna do the other side and then we're gonna slice this baby open.
I know that I have my laser mounted on the backside. I know a lot of guys that are going
to mill alone are going to want to do it. I'll explain why I have mine over there. For instance
this I'm going to have to do without the laser. If I had to this is the most important side where
the blade is cutting into it. There you go guys. Clean logs. So whether you want to do your time
cutting like that or sharpening blades these will make them last a little bit longer.
Are you ready to cut some wood? Yeah let's cut some wood. Buddy I have no splinters. Let's cut
some wood. Get in there. Let's cut some wood. Check out the new power lift. Beautiful. The
new power lift. That's right. Loving it. Set that bad boy at 19. 19 look at this no cranking. Thank
you Woodland Mill. Love it. Okay let's check out this new carbide blade.
All right here we go. Gonna fire it up. Fire it up. Fire it up.
Fire it up. Woodland Mill.
Felt pretty easy for such a hard wood. Here's the hard part Jay. I'll see what
I'm gonna roll. Okay. You all right? Yep all good. Beautiful cut. I love that. Look at that one.
I can't wait to see what it's gonna look like as we dig in a little bit.
I'll grab this and show them the wood. It's just the first cut into this. You know
it's going to be a beautiful log. Still out there on the staff end. Beautiful. Beautiful.
All right my man. That was a pretty good cut. That was a pretty good cut. Did you like the
new blade? Oh yeah that one cut kind of like butter. Okay butter's good. It looks like it cut
flat. Flat flat flat. Yeah I'm thinking so. Got the level over there. I don't think we need it.
I don't think so man. Looks pretty straight. It really does. I mean you can just
easily. Yeah there was no way. No way. No way. Nope. All right let me get some of the clips.
See what the wind has to do. I gotta get dolly down over here. Pipes on this bad boy. Yeah I
think we're gonna need that. I like that trick. I don't remember who did that but
somebody. Somebody. Thank you. Thank you.
I think this is gonna be a very nice looking piece of wood Dan.
Nice beam. Whoa there it goes. Hey man as long as it's still working.
I'll hook this anyway. Yeah. Oh you got it going? Okay. I just got it. I just got one from dying.
I got one clip. I got one dog on. Okay. I'm just gonna have to roll back to
get those toilet pipes in. That's all. Okay. You want me to go ahead and release? Release. All right.
I don't want to go nowhere. You got the pipes over there? I do. Okay. If you grab your pants.
Maybe you can just roll them back a little. This bad boy's big. It is big.
Everybody's falling. Everybody gave way. Good job Dan. Yeah but the bunk system keeps you
from taking them off the ground. You ready? You ready? There we go. Okay. What do you got up here?
We might be okay. Okay. Look at that. All right. Here we go. Okay.
I feel like we got the super small.
You know what I mean? The strap? Yeah it's not one of my super long ones.
I think that's the longest one we have right now other than the big. I think it's just a big rock.
No?
All right. Well good. One clip. You're on clip? Yep. All good. Dollies are down.
Pipes are out. Are we on clip? Yeah. Bad boy. Yeah. Fantastic.
Winch is working. So is the building. 12,000 pound winch. Yeah we're looking. Big log.
I'm gonna let loose so I can get this off. Okay.
Can you pull back here?
I'll probably get the cant hook if I need to. There you go. There we go.
Let's square this bad boy right now. Who wants the double flip?
Not this guy. Who wants the double flip Jay? I don't think the mill can take it.
He's checking for our square.
Oh buddy. Yeah? I like that. I like the sound of that already.
What do you need?
There we go. Lock and load. That was his load. I love it.
I think I'm going to use a whole lot of log dogs on this one Dan.
Where you at again? You're at 20 man. Really?
See how we do with the flip on this side my friend.
Nate's going to be very happy that I'm running the auto lift powerhead.
We are at 12.
Right on. Yeah? We are perfect my man. Perfect.
So our flip is centered then basically is where we're at. We are good. We are centered.
Okay. Are we all clipped down? We are all clipped down. Just ready for a number.
Pump me up to 19. Let me see how that looks. It's a lot nicer on my shoulder Dan.
Might not need so much axle. Well good Jay. All right we're at. Is that 19? That's 19.
There we go. That's my spot. I'm still cut good here on this side.
Okay. Really nothing terrible over here. No. I see. I mean I kind of scrubbed over a little bit.
I'm just going to give it a quick run my friend. All right. Cutting 19.
Oh you're going to give it a run with that. I got you. Okay.
Cut it. Cut it. All right. Cutting 19. We're good.
These are small. Super went to the test today. Oh man. This is one of the heaviest ones we've
had on here my friend. Yeah. We did a dig on that one. All right. He's safe.
You've already. We had no dolly. So here we go. We're all good. We are now centered clip. Nice.
Absolutely. Absolutely. All right. Last clip coming off. Okay. All good. It is pretty good
Jason. I like it. Do we need the uh. You got no clips on? No clips on. Do you need the pipes or
are we good? Probably uh. Let me give it a pull. There you go. All right. See look it eases them
out. No extra work Jay. I like that Dan. There's plenty of hard work to do. Let's take it easy
when we can. That's it. We just used our winch. Wedged it out. Put it in. We're putting these
little two bunks to the test for these posts. Ready? Yep. Good? Yep. All good. Here we go guys.
Tension up. That one hurt. That one shook the mill. I think the neighbors built that one. We
had a mill shake. What we didn't do is get these out of the way. Not a problem for that one. All
right. Maybe the pinky's not that weak. I was gonna say pinkies are covering. There we go. All
right. How far out are we over there? Eighth of an inch. Oh all right. These will do the trick.
You need to push in though. You like? Okay. So that did not do it. All right.
My can't hook lever can't hook. There we go.
How about down here Dan? With that. Are we out or are we good down here? Same amount.
Same amount? Okay. Just enough of the uh. Gotcha. Did that come in at all? Oh my gosh.
Did you come in? I don't know man. I gave her all I got. I'm looking for a 15 by 12. That's
going to be easy. That's going to be easy. That's going to be easy. A lot of good looking
meat on here. There's a lot of meat on here. All right. So that should have come in at the last
one. Push this. So really what I really want to do is we can actually get something out of here
is cut me at 16 and then we're going to cut it 15. 16 15 same size. All right. Yep. Should I do the
let me uh hit the uh
okay at least breeze it over some of the
s**t
Justin blaze. I don't want to hear anybody about the dirt.
16. 16. All right. Cutting 16. Coming back for 15. Yep. Rose dipping chips. What's that?
Oh, I'm gonna have to drop it down here. Let's my back. Okay, you're ready.
You all right? Yep. One, two, three. Coming back. Cutting 15. I felt like it was like digging in.
I know. I didn't feel that. I mean, it wasn't. It was moving through it like fine, but there was
something. I don't know. A little shimmy. Try it again on the slide. See what happens. All right.
Doesn't seem as smooth. No, it doesn't. It definitely doesn't.
I do like cutting big beams though, Jay. This girl's heavy. It is. Ready? Yeah. Except I gotta
come down. I can't go all the way. Okay. Rod in my back here. Rod in your back. Rod in the back.
One, two, three. Holy. Wow. Wow. Okay, that's really, that's super heavy.
It's perfect though. It's perfect, perfect, perfect. Right on the money, Bonnie. Are we
leaving this like this? No. Oh, I was gonna say. No. I need to, uh, I'm gonna have you take one
and stop at 13. 15, 14. Are we clear all over there for 13 over on that side?
That's right. 15, 14, 13. Yep. Are we clear for post over there? We are clear for post. All right.
15, 14, 13. 15, 14, 13. Power lift. Power head. Woo. Getting rid of the slag, dude. Okay.
15, 14, 13. Cutting it up. All right. Good.
That is beautiful. It's really nice. The way it's cut. I gotta see if we're running.
All right. Go to 14. Easiest way to clear your wood. All right. Cut to 14.
It's a very dense wood. We're going to try the next one with a normal blade,
our normal blade. See how it goes? Yeah. I mean, it's cutting perfectly flat.
I mean, they are. It's just, even that little movement's not doing anything negative to it
that I can see. I know, but it's just odd. It feels like it's hitting, doesn't it? It does.
No, it absolutely does. It is perfect, buddy. I mean, it's not cutting hard. The thing is,
you can push through it pretty easily. So, I'm going to 13 now?
I'm going to have you hang. What? I'm going to have you hang. Okay.
Wow. Yeah. We definitely don't need to roll them. Just roll them and take the other two inches off.
Let's get the scruffy side off there. Let's get the scruffy side off. At the end of the day,
I only need a 10 by 14. 10 by 14? This is 12 by 14.
All right.
There could be a lot of cutting in this video.
I don't know if you're just making a fast cut, but I'm going for it.
You're going for it? Woo! Testing the Woodland Mills post.
We're going to level the bunk tomorrow, Jay.
I know. We just gave her a... Hey, we came forward. Did you get back on?
Yes, we did. I thought as much. You did. You were absolutely right.
How are we doing for a post over there? We are checking right now.
You're going to be good because we're ending at 12. You are good.
Am I out over there? You need an inch to me. Really? Okay. One, two, three.
Hang on. I'm going to come around here. I'm not getting anything with this. Hold on.
One, two, three. There we go.
We're going to 12, you said? You should be going 13, then 12.
13, then 12. Okay. Let's take the two free pieces. Let's take the free pieces.
They're beautiful. 13, then 12. Going to 13. Let's see how she cuts.
Cutting 13. 13.
Not light. Beautiful. You're killing some of that stuff, Jay. Yep. That one seemed a little better.
A little better. You got one knot right here. All right. Coming back and cutting 12.
All right. Going for 12.
Okay. Cut 12.
All right. Look at that. So where are we at? Where are we at?
Yeah. We have one knot in here. 12 by 14.
I felt that knot earlier, actually. We are 12 by 15.
15? 12 by 15.
Some nice yield on that thing. What's up?
Some nice yield coming off this bad boy. It's just going to make it. It's just going to make it.
Boom. That's all we do. Okay. We're going to leave it just like that? No.
Yeah. Okay. Where are we going to put them? I don't know.
That's a pretty big floor beam, buddy. Pretty big beam, Dan. Pretty big beam.
Wow. Toc's not going to like this. No. We cut some off, but not that much.
You should be filling some water on this thing, man. So it's like everybody else.
Yeah. Let's do that. See what it looks like. Look at this beautiful stuff.
I'm going to grab some water so we can get a flash of color to see what this thing looks like.
I'm going to do a little scrape first, Jay. Yeah. Do a scrape.
Okay, guys. So now we've actually got ourselves a 12 by 15 that we're going to actually let dry.
See how this goes. We have a perfect standard cliff. Then when we're ready to use it,
we're going to cut it down. I'm really only looking for a 14 by 10. But this is what we're
going to do to start with. See how they dry out. See if they stay straight. And so not only did we
get this giant beam from that tree, look at this beautiful wood right here. It's getting ready to
go into our kiln. I mean, look at that. I'm even going to show you like if we slabbed it.
Like everybody else, let's pour some water on the wood we're trying to dry.
Well, we've got a little time, we don't have to worry about it.
Beautiful, beautiful wood. It's a different looking wood, isn't it? It is. It is dense,
I'll tell you that. It's dense. There you go. There you go. First beam for the uh orange.
We got a whole pile more we got to get done and get dry.
Let's finish with the pin oak and let's get on some red oak, my friend. There you go.
