Hello This is Sun-hyun Woo from TalkToMeInKorean com
Hello I'm Kyung-eun Kyung-eun
Yes
Travel
You don't like traveling
I love it too much
Why did I not want to talk about travel when I chose this topic
I didn’t think there was much to say about the recent trip I took
Let's talk about recent travel destinations instead of the broad topic of travel
You say there's nothing to say
Well exactly
Oh yes I see You're telling me
to be quiet
right No not at all
I think a travel destination that leaves a lasting impression—even if it's not a popular one—would be nice
Ms Kyung-eun was the one who went to
Europe alone wasn 't
she Around fifty days She called me from the airport
You must have sent a message right No
Did you call too
I did call
I really wanted to brag about it
Yes I remember that That moment
stands out in my mind doesn 't
it Oh definitely— that’s the one I remember most clearly
It was the first time I'd ever traveled alone and not
just for a short trip—this one was a full fifty days long
If you'd been traveling through Europe for 50 days how many countries did you visit
One I've forgotten it's been so long
More than ten No
I didn't have that many
I figured that even if I went once I'd still need at least three days
I don’t want to stay in London for five days or linger somewhere
for too long but I’d enjoy spending about five days in Rome
It felt like there was always about three days of it in every city
Long drawn-out stretches of it
And that seemed to be just fine
Yes that resonated with me
Yes I see
So that was about ten years ago
Yes it's been so long What about recently
Recently in fact it's been a trip with my child so
The atmosphere of the trip has changed quite a bit
It's completely different when traveling alone versus going with friends
That's right Yes
There's just so much to
take along and that means
the luggage ends up being way heavier Yes exactly indeed
The type of accommodation also varies
Yes And not just accommodations but activities as
well Yes
What happens that day
revolves around the child
Exactly That's when it becomes predetermined
Honestly before having a child I didn't think I'd enjoy traveling with one very much
I used to think I had to go everywhere when I didn’t have kids
but now that I do it’s actually more fun to go places with them
That's right So I'm
also spending a lot of time going out with my child
Of course places visited when the child was very young—three or four years old—are hard to remember later
I can't remember at all
Yes
Memory it went so far away is there a place where you can't remember
My daughter's first overseas trip was to
Malaysia but she can't remember it at all
But when went on a trip when he was five what did this child say
Mom this is my first time eating on a plane that's why I'm acting like this
We've already taken long trips a few times so we're quite familiar with them
He forgot it all even after traveling all the way to Los Angeles far away in the U S and still managed to forget it all
I used to talk about things like that when I
was five years old That's right Even if you forget those memories remain with your parents
And it would've been fine if I couldn't remember anything clearly
Yes but there are people like that you know
Because they can't remember like this
When children are young there are actually far more people who say there's no real need to travel around so much than you might expect
Yes there are many around me there really are a lot nearby Even if
I can't remember at least photos will remain
Since my mom and dad still live in their memories I
think that becomes a cherished
memory Yes that's right
I think it's good
Yes actually the first few times I brought them I couldn't remember much at all
But by the time they were five or six they could still remember that moment
though of course they didn’t really grasp how far they’d gone
Now that they're six seven years old I show them the globe and say "Korea
is right here and this time we've traveled all the way out and back "
Last time I went all the way there and came back Then you'd be surprised yourself
You've come so far and returned And
now what I want to say is
Let's go there let's go there
but you can't just go whenever you
feel like it That's just how it is that's just how it is
I'll tell
you Rather than the most recent destination I've visited I'll share the one that's left the deepest impression on me
If I had to pick
one place right now that isn 't
in Europe it'd be Hawaii Where Hawaii yes
We went to Hawaii for our honeymoon and now that we've been back we'
re so fond of it that we'd love to go back there for another honeymoon
We used to say we'd definitely meet again when we hit the 10-year mark
But unexpectedly just as were approaching the fifth anniversary I
suddenly found myself heading to Hawaii and it felt incredibly emotional
Being the two of us there… it feels so strange having the three
of us together at the restaurant where the two of used to go
And it felt really
wonderful That's right The fact that the child was
born and we're here like this
At that time during our honeymoon we had no idea what kind of child we would have
It was uncertain whether a child would even be born
But bringing a 5-year-old along to the same honeymoon destination felt strangely surreal Exactly
I didn't mean it that way—after all I'd been to Hawaii before
getting married and later took my first child there after the wedding
Yes But we didn't
go to the same restaurant
You know just walking along Waikiki Beach you see pretty much the same kind of hotels everywhere
So there was a hotel I stayed at the first time I visited
This time I wasn't there but was somewhere else in the
city and after playing by the seaside you know that tube
You need to inflate it with the larger one but just looking
at it through my own mouth
I feel like I might pass out—it's so exhausting
So thinking back I believe that machine was at the
hotel's outdoor pool when I stayed there a few years ago
So I went ahead and asked if it was okay to write this then wrote it down
Oh I remember now that thing
Yes just vaguely
So ah before this I actually came here as a guest at this hotel
I came to pump air into the tube today
Years since last time—really strange
I think that was the first time I truly understood what it feels like to visit the same place as someone else
I’m not driven by that kind of feeling either
I've been to the same place three or even four times before
I've been to London three or four times and I've
also visited Tokyo many times as well as Shanghai
Going back to the same place one year later or
two years later—doesn't it seem incredibly strange
It's strange—something feels like it's changed doesn't it
But it's exactly the same
Even though the city keeps changing there are still those same
old restaurants which feels kind of not like Seoul though
Yes of course visitors coming to Seoul from
abroad might think it has changed so much
Lots of people come to Korea for travel don't they And strangely
quite a few visitors keep coming back every single vacation
I used to think it was so fascinating just watching them
In fact that's probably why it's somewhat difficult for Korea to produce a guidebook in book form
That makes sense It
keeps changing all the time
Exactly
That's why you're probably just looking up information online these days
I was looking forward to visiting Indonesia as one of my recent travel
destinations but was I really looking forward to it
My second child has been unwell and suffered greatly Starting from
the second day they developed a fever reaching up to 40 degrees
The second one even reached as high as 41 degrees at times and tends to run a fever easily
It's scary when the temperature hits 41 degrees isn't it
This time it didn't quite reach 41 but it did hit 40.2
When you put thermometer in your ear the color
changes doesn't it Red red keeps coming up
So I brought it down a bit with fever reducer and when it
seemed to have gone down to around 39.0 did you go to the hospital
I didn't go to the hospital and
just took the medicine I
already had for about three days using both types of fever reducers continuously
They’ve been taking care of things so it’s time to head home now
You've worked hard
Yes so the rest was all enjoyable
We had a lot of fun with the first one but it was
too much trouble with the second so I'm not taking them next time
That's right Until it gets a bit
bigger Recently my own recent destination
was Bali
We had so much fun really
It was absolutely wonderful honestly
The accommodation was good and I really enjoyed the
food—since I like a wide variety of dishes I ate well
The jungle with monkeys on Bali is famous isn't it
Oh that's right
We actually took it off the list because were kind of scared to go there
But as I passed by I could catch a glimpse of a monkey just ahead
There was a small space right in front of the entrance to the monkey forest
People would feed the monkeys in that space
The monkeys come down and snatch the food
And they take lots of photos saying it's so cute
But just as we're passing by my daughter suddenly wants to go there
So I got down there and the child was in a stroller
Here were with Daddy and not a single monkey in sight
So I was just about to search when I realized oh I can't see the monkey anymore
How on earth am I supposed to see the monkey now
I was hesitating whether I should go to the monkey forest or not
In the time weren’t looking a monkey came right under the stroller
It's reaching out toward the child like this
Trying to take something
My daughter was eating chocolate that's all
But it seems he must have assumed
the monkey would throw him a chocolate just like everyone else does
So but my daughter insisted that chocolate was hers
refusing to give it up while saying "It's mine "
But that fleeting moment was
terrifying My husband was terrified too
I was so scared I couldn't help screaming and just panicked not knowing what to do
Fortunately the nearby residents kindly helped scare off the monkey
What started as a big amusing mishap is now a cherished memory
and I used it to teach my daughter a valuable lesson
Next throw a chocolate
What if a monkey or another animal comes
Yes that's right—were taught that way
but back then it was truly terrifying
We'll visit there again when the child is a bit older
Oh that's right
It should be fun if we can go safely
Yes that seems likely There are a few memories that stand out right now—some that were a bit difficult or tough to endure
That's right That's probably why it's so memorable—because in that moment you don't want to forget it
But it's nice that we can have such an interesting conversation
Yes that's right
In the end it was safe so everything was fine
Yes today I talked about a travel destination I recently visited
It's funny how even places visited long ago can spark a
conversation Yes
Well then shall we return next time to a different topic
Yes see you next
time Goodbye
