They don't want to acknowledge how capitalism actually can go against patriotism.
What's more American than I'm for the money.
Exactly.
I'm not apologizing for that.
And that's something, regardless of whatever opinion you have about her,
that's something that we haven't seen yet.
Trailblazers, in my mind, they always have my respect.
Alright everybody, since we made our last video about Aileen Gu and Alyssa Liu,
the topic has gotten even hotter.
It is even brought up more in the news and even debated even more
since Alyssa has won her second gold and Aileen has just won another gold.
So let's talk about it.
Let's go.
Alright everybody, I'm here with my actor friend Matt.
Back again.
What's up guys?
Alright man, we got to talk about the winteruations again
because since we last spoke about it, the comparison has gotten hotter.
Yes, not only the competition has gotten hotter,
but the comparisons and the talking points have heated up.
We got big names in right-wing politics.
J.D. Vance, Ted Cruz, Megyn Kelly, Laura Ingraham,
they've all got something to say.
Even Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports, you know, taking that American angle.
It's even segmented and fissured our Asian community, you know,
the conservative Asian group.
That's true.
And in the comment section of our video, I mean,
there's even some disagreement about how people feel.
So you know what?
I feel like it's time.
I'm actually going to take a stand on all this
and I'm going to tell you exactly how I feel about it.
Wait, are these matcha Oreos?
Not only do we have huge political figures talking about Aileen Gu,
but she's reaching a status that is in rare error.
Example, Maria Sharapova, Naomi Osaka,
representing Russia and Japan respectively.
But people don't know it because it's constantly mistaken as they're American.
They even put like the American flag there.
I think this is happening to Aileen soon,
where she is reaching the certain next level of stardom.
I mean, hell, Tom Brady even left a comment on Instagram.
All right, everybody here at the Hong Kong supermarket getting some snacks.
But we got to talk about some of these comments that not just tweets from politicians,
which some big name politicians have been talking about.
But what was one of the comments on the YouTube channel?
So I found it funny that whenever it comes to China and nitpicking China,
it's always under the pretense of human rights.
Right, right.
It's just this easy target where it's like,
oh, Aileen Gu is competing for China.
She must hate America.
And therefore, China is trying to destroy us.
There's this one Republican that tweeted this thing that said
that China is trying to destroy our country
so that anybody who glorifies China needs to have consequences.
And I was like, yo, that sounds pretty strong.
What are you even trying to get at, you know?
Yeah, it's become really weaponized, as we said.
People are just tuning in.
And as soon as they figure out this is a new issue they could latch on,
it doesn't even matter that they haven't been paying attention to Aileen's events,
that she's a big air skier, that she's a half-pipe skier, that she's a freestyle.
No, it doesn't matter.
It doesn't even matter that this is the first Olympics they've watched.
But what really matters is, point out, how can we use this for our angle?
Yeah, and I think it's really funny how there's a lot of hypocrisy
and even response to the hypocrisy.
So you're saying one thing you noticed was that
there's more people on the left or the liberal side
who are telling all the conservatives who are cheering on Alyssa Liu
and being like, oh my gosh, Alyssa's this great American.
She's racing for America.
She chose America over China.
She chose and turned down, actually, Chinese offers, which I do believe.
I do think that last Beijing Olympics, she was offered to compete for China
and she didn't take it.
Her parents, her dad didn't want to take it, you know?
And then so they're kind of like,
but conservative people who support Alyssa for being this patriot,
don't you know that she's very liberal?
You know, she's from the Bay Area.
She got colored hair.
This is the exact type of people.
She's got a mouth piercing.
Yeah, and that's exact people that like the conservative right side
is always like, oh, these blue haired people who are just so liberal.
I'm like, but then what some conservatives are saying,
well, hey, you know what?
I'm just proud that she's American.
I don't care about her politics.
Yeah, so they'll say, you know, liberals, you don't really get us
because she's standing up for the anthem.
She's not doing a Colin Kaepernick kneeling.
That's enough for us.
Flying under the flag is enough for us.
So it's pretty simple to them, I guess, of being American.
According to that statement.
Yes, I do think that's just them trying to defend it
because they just need this comparison.
I think there's a little bit of both.
I do think they're very happy about that.
But I do think a little bit of both.
I mean, to point out another hypocrisy, Dave Portnoy, Barstool Sports CEO.
Right wing supporter?
No, actually, he's center left.
He's center left.
But didn't he support Trump?
No, he did.
But he's also in a board.
He also supports abortion.
So he's like, yeah, he's center left, I would say.
And he had a tweet that said Alyssa Liu greater than Eileen Gu.
American flag, American flag.
This is also, by the way, the same guy who showed up to a Brice Mitchell UFC fight
waving the Israeli flag, a foreign flag, by the way, saying this is a win for Israel.
Which is another country, by the way.
Right, right, right.
His own ethnic pride, his own religious pride.
His own ethnic pride and ancestral pride.
But at the same time, you know, now he's American.
It's just kind of a pick and choose moment for someone like Dave Portnoy.
For sure, it's a pick and choose moment.
And I think some other hypocrisy is that, you know, a lot of people who are like pro-capitalism
are like, oh, also like how they don't want to acknowledge how capitalism actually can
go against patriotism.
Because when you're talking about global capitalism, when in the world that is globalized,
which has been like this for decades, by the way, and is only moving more and more
to this direction, there's going to be more and more people who have these mixed identities
that can play both sides.
In some of your comments were saying, what's more American than Eileen going for the money?
Exactly.
That's what I'm saying.
If you're going to be mad at her for being a capitalist, then you have to be mad at everybody
else for being a capitalist.
Yeah.
Because she's just choosing her way.
But again, I think this is kind of fake outrage about Asians.
Do people really care about two Asian girls?
Honestly, it's just because it's the Olympics.
It's a hot topic.
The Olympics has not been a nationalistic thing for a long time.
For a long time, even the past decade, as the world has become more globalized, more
athletes can move around.
In my opinion, the Olympics is essentially like the NBA, where you have franchises, different
countries who have different athletes.
Since there's now so much money involved in especially being a star, especially if you're
like a cool athlete, you get so much money for being an athlete for that country.
Then there's the incentive.
You're just basically talking about Eileen picking between the Lakers and the Knicks.
Rival, rival franchises.
You get what I'm saying?
Yes.
I think it's also funny because most people aren't hardcore fans of these fringe sports.
Not only that, I wasn't on Chinese netizen Weibo or anything, but there were plenty of
Chinese table tennis players who weren't.
Who's the famous guy, Ma?
If they're not the top four, they're playing for Hungary, Romania, other countries that
just need a player.
Countries are just like getting anybody just to get a gold.
Yeah.
To compete.
Yeah.
And there's plenty of others.
In the comments, we could pull them up.
There's plenty of people who pointed out people who played for other countries that happened
to be American because of whatever.
We see it in basketball all the time too, right?
Andre Blanche once played for Philippines.
Did you know that?
Yeah, I remember.
You didn't talk about in the first video that you guys are wise to mention.
Eileen being a hot, attractive Asian girl has a lot to do with why people have opinions.
People want to have opinions on the popular person.
Think about, oh, what if she is the perfect American girl that I can maybe be with?
It's parasocial, right?
This is how people think.
It's kind of a proxy for if this beautiful girl, you approach her and then she rejects
you, then you're extra mad.
It's essentially some game like that.
It's just like, hey, you know, Eileen, I think you're really beautiful and you're great American.
And then she's like, I'm sorry, I'm going to compete for China.
And even bigger slap on the face that a lot of her sponsors are Western.
She's getting invited to the Time Gala and all these other Western events.
No, I think she's a global icon now.
She has no barriers.
I mean, listen, here's one quote.
And this is not to say that if I was in Eileen's position, would I compete for China?
I don't know.
It'd be tough to say.
I think winning for America would be really cool.
But she says, so many athletes compete for a different country.
People only have a problem with me doing it because they kind of lump China into this
monolithic entity and they just hate China.
So it's not really about what they think it's about.
And also because I win.
Like if I wasn't doing so well, I think that they probably wouldn't care as much.
And that's OK for me.
People are entitled to their opinions.
Yeah.
What's still got for me there that China's not a monolith and what we as Asians probably
would just even want at a bare minimum is that they see each Asian ancestry and country
as individual countries with their own differences, just like we see Europe.
And not everyone's educated on this.
She's supposed to be speaking about it.
She didn't have to bring it up.
She did bring it up, though.
She herself lives as a cosmopolitan, rich Asian girl.
Sometimes it's not it's not something that everyone sees every day.
And guess what?
People are going to have opinions about it because she's pretty.
Yeah.
Well, guys, the debate continues and the comparisons will continue between the two.
And whether it's right or wrong, they are two half Chinese Americans who have chosen
different paths, and they are actually both very good at what they do.
So no matter how people feel about it, I'm sure they're going to keep living their life.
I'm sure Alyssa takes pride in her choices, and I'm sure Eileen takes pride in her choices.
You don't have to like either of them.
Obviously, Alyssa is the one that most people are trying to support right now because she's
a proxy for being patriotic to America.
Lingu, Alyssa Liu, do they make your Waysian Hall of Fame?
My Waysian?
Are we talking about Waysian as specifically half Caucasian, half Asian?
Let's go with just half Asian ancestry, at least half.
Half Asian ancestry.
Yeah, I think they do because they're gold medalists.
And they probably both speak their Asian language.
I know Eileen does.
Yeah.
I think Alyssa does, too.
So.
Okay.
So what's your requirements?
All right.
So I think it's you have to measure.
Also, there are obviously accomplishments.
Yeah.
How Asian they are, like if they have learned or kept some of their Asian culture clearly,
if they talk about it, if they're proud of it outwardly.
Yeah.
And.
Like how they conduct themselves in interviews.
Yeah.
You don't have to date an Asian person.
Let's take that out of there because that's just too hard.
It doesn't hurt though, right?
No, I think it's a plus, but that's not one of the main metrics.
It's really about what you've accomplished, the impact that it's made and how proud outwardly
you are about being Asian.
Okay.
So who else is up there for you?
Naomi Osaka.
I think she speaks Japanese.
She grew up in Japan.
Taylor Rapp.
That's a shout out right there.
Apollo Ono.
I would count him definitely.
He's up there.
Here's the tough thing about Bruno Mars.
A lot of people don't see him fully as half Asian because I don't think he talks about
his Asian side enough.
So he has all the accomplishments in the world.
But even though he's supposedly half Filipino, I don't think he really plays that up.
So I don't know.
I'm going to have to revert to my Filipino friends for that one.
Most Filipino friends claim him.
They most claim him, but they know that he doesn't talk about being Filipino.
Anyways, Tiger Woods, half Thai Chinese.
The black community is actually upset that he doesn't talk about being black enough.
Does he really talk about being Asian?
I don't know.
No, I don't think so.
I mean, I don't think so either.
Well, Dr. Umar wasn't happy.
Roy Hachimura.
I mean, he's literally from Asia.
So Henry Golding, you know, he was a lead in a pretty significant movie that kind of
like set forth this, not set forth, but it kind of like spearheaded the wave of Asian
representation, I would say.
Crazy rich Asian.
So I got to give him that.
Most people like to say Keanu Reeves.
Keanu Reeves.
He's just a solid guy.
He's just he doesn't really talk enough about being Asian.
You know what I mean?
A lot of his roles have some Asian themes in them, like Matrix doing Kung Fu or like
it's tough for me to give him that, even though he is a Hall of Fame guy.
I like putting Mike Shinoda from Linkin Park up there.
One of the first cool Asians that he does rep it, but he was also at that time era,
you couldn't really talk that much about it.
All right.
You kind of had to be cool first and then bring it in.
Olivia Munn, you know, she's been.
She's been cool.
For someone who isn't very Asian looking passing, she has done a lot.
Well, she's spoken up during the Asian hate quite a bit.
How about some people?
I like Russell Wong.
You know him?
No, I like Russell Wong.
I think he should have been a bigger star.
Yeah.
Emerald R. Kanyu, Grand Slam champion.
Favorite tennis player is Lee Na, the first Grand Slam champion in Chinese tennis.
If you're a champion of something.
Yeah.
Well, overrated now, but no one could take that champion away from that Grand Slam away
from her.
Anyways, guys, let us know in the comments down below if we're missing any other half
Asians that are elite half Asians.
I get it.
Bruce Lee was a fourth European Jordan Clarkson.
He's not really Angela, baby.
Let me know in the comments down below.
What do you guys think about all this controversy?
Alyssa Liu versus Eileen Gu.
It's still going.
It's still a hot topic.
Until next time we out.
