A fight is escalating tonight over what to do with Dallas City Hall.
Some feel it's too historic to abandon while others say
that land is key to keeping the Mavs and Stars and bringing more life downtown.
Kevin Reese just spoke with a prominent group that could sway the decision but it won't happen
without a fight. The future of Dallas City Hall is very much in limbo and now a heavyweight has
just entered the competition. We feel that the opportunity is huge. Downtown Dallas Inc,
the organization that manages and promotes much of the economic development in the city,
announced its support for tearing down the 47-year-old building and developing something
else. We believe that our mayor and our city council members will be acting as responsible
stewards of our tax dollars by approving a relocation. But then there's the reaction of
city council member Adam Basildua. Is frustration and anger quite frankly? The site is a potential
new location for a future Mavs complex, an idea leveraged by a report that suggests the current
building needs a billion dollars in upgrades over the next 20 years. This is about a land grab,
this is about a economic development opportunity. Basildua likens the entire idea to corporate
welfare for billionaire sports team owners. The perception that I have gained is that the average
taxpayer of our city is adamantly opposed to us making a decision to get rid of our city hall.
Downtown Dallas Inc says any new city hall should stay in downtown Dallas. They want the Mavs,
Stars and Wings to stay downtown too. And help us breathe life into the long dormant
southern side of downtown and to finally re-stitch downtown to southern Dallas. Discussions at city
hall on that very topic are being expedited. A special city council meeting to talk about options
is scheduled for next week. In Dallas, I'm Kevin Reese. Now for our first look at the weekend
forecast. Pete, you've been telling us for several days now how warm it'll be. Hasn't changed,
Chris. I'm going 80s. We were in the 80s today. We'll be in the 80s as we head through the weekend
and then next week, Wednesday of next week, we have a WFA weather alert day in place for Wednesday
and that's because of rain. We haven't had rain in quite a while and it's going to be multiple days.
But right now, let's start with Wednesday. We may extend this even a little bit farther.
On and off rain begins Wednesday. Some isolated thunderstorms, maybe some small hail and some
winds. That's all a possibility. So what do you need? You need to stay updated on the forecast.
You may need to adjust your outdoor plans on Wednesday and please download WFA Plus to your TV.
81. That was the high temperature today. We did it. It's the 15th 80 degree day. It's the most
on record in a winter here for the Dallas-Fort Worth area and I have another one tomorrow.
Tomorrow is the last day of February, so a warm day indeed. In the 70s outside right now, 78 in
Dallas, 76 in Fort Worth. Clear skies across north Texas. Other than a little cloud cover along the
Texas coast and some cirrus clouds up in the Panhandle, that is it. And my forecast for the
weekend, maybe a sprinkle or a spotty shower tomorrow morning. Otherwise, the sun and clouds
tomorrow morning. Then the sun comes out, we hit 84. Sunshine on Sunday, we hit 82. 80s Monday and
Tuesday of next week. Then we fall off into the 70s and that's when the rain returns. I'll have
that rainfall timeline coming up. Within the last several hours, former Vice President Kamala Harris
endorsed Representative Jasmine Crockett in the Texas Senate race. She recorded a robocall to try
and turn out voters. Texas has the chance to send a fighter like Jasmine Crockett to the United
States Senate. Jasmine has the experience and record to hold Donald Trump and his billionaire
cronies accountable. It's time to turn Texas blue. Congresswoman Crockett has shared she
consulted with Harris before joining the Senate race. She served as Harris's national co-chair
during her run for president. Crockett is running against State Representative James Tallarico in
the Democratic primary. He's been endorsed by several news outlets like the Houston Chronicle
and Austin American-Statesman. The winner of their race will go on to face the Republican candidate,
either incumbent Senator John Cornyn, current Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton,
or Representative Wesley Hunt. Early voting ends less than an hour from now and we've seen some
fairly long lines outside polling sites like Tarrant County Election South Service Center.
Voters casting their ballot in Arlington ahead of Election Day. We just checked with the Secretary
of State. More than 10 percent of registered voters in Texas have already cast a ballot,
which works out to roughly 1.9 million people. This primary will decide who's on the ballot in
November and as long as you're in line by 7 p.m. you can still cast an early ballot tonight.
Several counties are posting up-to-date wait times online so you can see how long it'll be
before you go. President Trump is wrapping up his visit to Corpus Christi tonight. He was expected
in town to promote his energy agenda but touched on several things from his State of the Union
speech and the country's affordability to the possibility of a third term despite the 22nd
amendment which restricts presidents to two terms. He also talked about a big decision in Iran that's
looming. We're going to keep on working and we'll keep on fighting. Texas will keep on drilling.
Corpus Christi will keep on shipping and the United States of America will keep on winning,
winning, winning. President Trump shouted out all the Texas Senate race candidates but
stopped short of endorsing one saying it would be an interesting race. We invite you to join us
Tuesday at 7 p.m. on WFAA Plus. Our political team will be live at campaigns across Texas as the
results come in and a panel of experts will break down the numbers all night long. Our streaming app
is free to download to your TV. Well the evening rush is well underway as everyone looks to get
a jump on the weekend. Stacey is here with a look at traffic. Hey they most certainly do. It's been
a busy evening, busy afternoon so far. We're starting in southwest Dallas where an accident
is slowing things down along Spur 408. We're watching that backup in the southbound lanes at
I-20. Then we also have a problem just south of Farmers Branch along I-35E northbound. A stalled
truck slowing things down at Royal and real quick heading on over to Rockwell County. A major backup
I-30 eastbound at John King Boulevard as a result of an accident. Guys
