Now, between them, they've starred in some of the best films of the last 30 years.
Films like Love Actually, Zombieland, Harry Potter, The Amazing Spider-Man,
Nanny McPhee, Birdman, Sense and Sensibility, The Favourite, Remains of the Day,
La La Land, the list goes on and on.
It is the fabulous Emma Stone and Emma Thompson.
First of all, let me just ask, when you're working on this movie,
and for the purpose of this interview, how does one refer to the two Emmas
so as to not get confused? Is it English Emma and Yankee Doodle Emma,
or is it young Emma and not quite as young Emma?
What do you prefer?
That's what I would go for, yeah. Young Emma and old Emma, that'll do.
Young and old Emma.
Okay, well, first of all, tell me about the film.
The film Cruella from Disney, what's the premise?
Let's go to young Emma.
Well, the premise is kind of a reimagining of an origin story
of the villain Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians.
But it's set in the 70s in London, and it's like a brand new world,
from childhood.
Her name is Estella, and then she kind of transforms into Cruella,
and she interacts with this woman, the Baroness, who's played by Emma T.
Actually, it's very strange to find yourself in a period movie
where you actually belong to the period.
Yes.
You know what I mean?
I mean, with sense of self, some stuff that was said back in the day,
like the 18th century, you go, okay, I have nothing to do with this,
I'll just wear the frocks.
Yeah.
But this time, I'm in the frocks, and I'm going,
oh, my God, I was alive.
Doesn't he feel a bit Frankensteinian and weird and ancient?
But it was also really so touching, too, so nostalgic.
Oh, my God.
You know, I'm thrilled to have you both here,
but really the star of the film is not around here at the moment,
and I'm talking, of course, about Wink, the one-eyed chihuahua.
Yes.
There's Wink.
You had me with Wink, because the minute Wink appears on screen,
I'm so, it must be lovely,
and you work with quite a lot of animals in the film.
Obviously, there are Dalmatians, but, and I don't want to spoil it,
but the Dalmatians, they're real pricks.
Emma S., I know you filmed this here in London.
Of course, London has shown a great advantage in the film.
It looked beautiful.
But you've been here quite a lot.
You came here before you were really established as a performer,
didn't you?
Yeah.
I mean, the first time I went to London was when I was 18,
but recently The Favourite and Cruella kind of shot pretty close
to each other in London, so I've spent a lot of time there lately.
Yeah, oh, The Favourite was amazing as well.
And you worked with Olivia Colman, of course,
and she had some surprises for you on the set, didn't she?
What, are you talking about the sponge?
I am asking about the sponge,
but I thought I'd approach it as elegantly as possible.
No, you can't approach the sponge elegantly.
She tells that story as if it was a surprise,
but I asked for that sponge.
Okay, can we, just for the people who don't know what we're talking about,
tell us what this is.
Oh, it's filthy.
All right, you know, I got to diddle Olivia Colman in the movie, right?
And so I have to, you know, kind of reach up her skirt,
and there's just nothing there,
and you have to kind of move your arm as if something's happening.
So we put a damp sponge above.
It's so disgusting.
And then I just sort of had to, you know,
fondle a sponge.
If she puts a tiny little wake on it,
that would have worked.
See, that's the attention to detail that wins Oscars.
Yes.
That really is.
That's exactly right.
You know, we have the brilliant Steve Coogan here with us today,
who is himself a greatly gifted actor,
but also, I know Emma T will know this,
I don't know if Emma S knows this,
but he's also a very gifted impersonator.
Obviously.
He does voice...
And we thought we might get him to run a few voices past you, Emma T,
of people you have co-starred with,
to see if you can identify them.
Steve, if you'll unleash one for us now.
Well, you see, he speaks...
I knew someone who speaks like that.
He's very sort of, you know, he's...
Tony Hopkins.
That's right.
Yeah, bingo, one for one.
That's it.
This man is someone who is very well-known in the theatre
and has a voice that projects itself so clearly that one...
Come on.
Ian McKellen.
Yes!
OK, um...
I, um...
Well, I...
Are you trying to seduce me?
Dustin.
OK, Dustin, OK.
You're quoting from his actual...
Well, I didn't say Mrs Robinson.
OK.
Come on.
Um...
It's very good.
Oh, my God.
Go on, go on.
OK.
When he was young, he used to speak like that.
He used to talk like that.
But when he's got older, it's much more like...
It's more rounded.
It's much...
And he shouts, right like that,
when he wants to get your attention.
Don't disrespect me.
I've got it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
All right, say hello to my little friend.
LAUGHTER
Oh, OK, **** that one.
The next one is...
I'm not sure whether he's American
or whether he's from somewhere else.
Pierce Brosnan?
No, he...
No, no, no.
Pierce Brosnan's more like him.
Liam Neeson?
Yeah, Liam Neeson.
APPLAUSE
I'll track you down.
I will find you.
Yeah.
I will find you.
I have a particular set of skills.
Yeah, yeah.
Um...
LAUGHTER
Don't give up the daisy.
That was good.
I did a good one.
Wait till I do my appetino.
She'll get it straight away.
Yeah, brilliant.
Hoo-ha!
Well, that's supposed to be me, not you.
Sorry.
OK, the next one is...
Sometimes I drive my Hummer round LA.
Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Yeah, OK, yeah.
Hold on, Steve.
You gave too much away.
Who else is going to drive a Hummer round LA?
Lots of people drive Hummers round LA.
Classy, classy.
Yeah, OK.
OK, the next one is...
Pray did I do that.
You know you're doing well, eh?
Pray did I do that.
The most wonderful Billy Connolly.
Congratulations.
My pubic hair in a certain light looks a bit like Stuart Granger.
Well, thank you, Steve.
Thank you.
Cruella is out, as I said, it's out at cinemas.
And what a lovely thing to be able to go back to a cinema
and share the experience of a movie.
And I wonder, is it going to go on?
If they want to take the story on, presumably, they would.
And would you want to do that?
It feels a little presumptuous to go,
and we're making another.
But you would be open to it if we all said,
please, let's have some more.
I mean, sure.
This is not...
Emma, this is not contractually binding.
OK, OK.
I mean, this won't be...
You can still wriggle out if you don't want to.
LAUGHTER
No need to be quite so well, that's what I'm saying.
Fine, yes, yes, yes, yes.
OK, lovely speaking to you both.
Hadn't it been lovely to have them here,
sort of in the studio with us, ladies and gentlemen?
We really have. Congratulations on the film.
Thank you for joining us.
Emma Stone and Emma Thompson, ladies and gentlemen.
Thank you.
