Only a short drive from Hobart is Bruny Island, one of Tasmania’s most popular island destinations, aside from the entire island of Tasmania itself of course. You access the island via a ferry at Kerrington, approximately 30 minutes drive south of Hobart. The ferry operates regularly every half hour and if you’ll see why! The island is a mecca for tourists, surfers, nature lovers, foodies, relaxation seekers and of course the locals. Having already been to Bruny Island a few times we went for two reasons this time around; Bruny Island Hideaway and Oysters… lots and lots of oysters.
Once you arrive off the ferry you’ll drive past several unique food and drink destinations. Be sure to grab a map from the ferry that show you where they all are and you’ll easily find where you want to go… don’t worry though, you can’t make too many wrong turns on Bruny. Get Shucked is oyster heaven, what used to be just a caravan with a few logs for seating has now grown into a large established kitchen, serving lunch as well as fresh oysters.
What we really came to see this time around was the Bruny Island Hideaway, an award winning cabin that celebrates small living. Hidden deep in the hills at Alonnah, this cabin truly is a hideaway. Having seen the home many times via imagery, experiencing this pitched timber oasis in real life was something else entirely...

How many did you order? I think I ordered three dozen.
How many are you gonna have like right now? Oh a full dozen.
Kettering. What's that? About 10 minutes from Kettering the ferry so if we go now we'll make
there 12 30. How good was that home? Pretty bloody good. I'm pretty inspired. I want to
build a little shack now. So do I, I know. We better get on real estate and check out some land.
Jump in, let's go. Ah, pressure. Andrew bought us wine. Is that not the nicest? And all the
Borini Island stuff to get us sorted. How sweet. All right let's get in, let's get in, let's get in.
Traffic jam. How are we gonna, how long is it gonna take? What are we gonna do if we don't get on?
Oh we'll get on. Will we? Yeah, I'm not swimming. Plus we've got precious cargo. Like what? Food.
You. And me. Oh no. Everyone's going there. Hopefully there's still oysters left. Okay,
so the last time that Jono and I came to Tassie, Jono was super excited because he loves oysters
and he made it a challenge to eat a dozen oysters every single day. And we're here for a week and
he actually did it. Except one day, no joke, he missed out one day and so the next day he ate 24.
So far on this trip he has only had like I think one or two oysters and he has been
talking about oysters so much. He's like when are we gonna get to Borini? When are we gonna
have oysters? And we just got to this oyster place to get sharks and I can't wait to see
how many oysters he orders. So good. What are you doing? Let's go get oysters already. What?
Are you hungry? Yes. Okay. Let's go. Seriously, how many? We'll go get a couple. Oh my gosh. We're
gonna go battle all the turos. Come on, let's go. I know. You're a turo. Yeah, I know. Am I
annoying you that I haven't got out of the car yet? Come on. Okay. How many are you gonna get?
A couple. Let me take this. He keeps saying a couple but we all know it's a couple.
How long do you reckon this is gonna take? I don't know. They don't know.
Lucky to do it though. Give me your car mate. Only because by the time you get there,
I'll have them boxed up for you and it'll say queuing up and all that. You're a good man. Thank
you. We're gonna beat him back to the window. You just felt like locals. Yeah. How do you manage
that? Because they picked me out of the crowd. How many did you order? I think I ordered three
dozen oysters. I might up it though when I get back to the window. How many are you gonna have
right now? A full dozen. So what are we doing? We're bringing the car around for oyster drive
through. Oyster drive through. Okay. Because they heard us and they walked around and then
they went and got the car with the other people. They pipped us at the bloody line. That's not,
that's not how you do it. That's not how you do it. Oh, he's so dirty. Still getting looked after.
He's looking after his own. He wants to put me on out the back.
Let me just say sir, what a fantastic customer you are. No one has driven that well in all the
years. No one's come in that and just stepped right into the sunshine. Fantastic. Heroic effort.
Happy? All right, where are we going to go to eat then? Somewhere with heaps less people. Okay,
let's go. Can't wait. Can't wait any longer. Yep. Oh beautiful. Wow, it's so good. Yum.
This is better than Macca's drive through. Way better. Oh, what? You want some before they're
all gone? This is your snack pack. Thanks for getting the gate. Tell you what, it's already
an experience. Why's that? Well, I like it. I mean, it's called the hideaway, but seriously,
this is epic. I wasn't expecting that. Well, we haven't even got to the house yet. I know.
Exactly. Yeah. Okay. Grab the guide, bud. She's making us work for it, but it looks worth it.
It's pretty sweet. I feel like walking there. You can walk there if you want. Nah, I'll
drive up. How good's the view? How good is that? Oh well, we better get out. Let's go, let's go.
I'm going to sit on the side, because that's the side I'm sitting. I never run, I just start looking.
Shoes off, cabin. After you.
Welcome home. How good does this feel? I've got to say, this little guy
feels and is a lot bigger than I thought it would be. We've got our kitchen over here.
We've got fridge, plenty of storage. Nice little shelving here for all of our plates.
Epic fireplace here. Plus, check this out. Incredible is this. You can obviously tell
that the owner has experienced Japanese homes, and this is just insane. I love this. This view
is just amazing. Plus, more storage. More hidden storage. Tell you what,
they've been clever with the storage. It's a tiny home, you're going to have to do that, but we're
going up. Here is the bedroom loft. I love this. There is so much height here. It's actually really
tall. I can only just touch that, stretching out. It's a really good feel. Then, would you check out
this amazing view that you get from bed? Oh my God, imagine waking up here. A lovely shelf detail
here to put your cup of tea, put your books. Oh my gosh, so incredible. Shall we go back downstairs?
Come on. It's time to come down. I love that there's so much storage in this home. We've
got a little spot here for the firewood, which is cool. I also love, ready? Look up. Look at
these skylights. The skylights let a lot of light in. The windows let a lot of light in, but
our doors also open up. Oh my gosh, how good is this? This completely opens up the cabin.
Doesn't stop there. Oh my God, I love that. Oh, that is letting the most beautiful amount of
breeze through. So gorgeous. That's completely doubled the footprint of this cabin,
but we haven't checked out the bathroom, so come. Tucked away here. Very gorgeous, modest bathroom,
but a very luxurious feel. Look how epic that basin is. I love it. You've got your shower,
you've got your toilet, but guys.
Talk about being at one with nature. All right, I've got one last thing I've got to show you.
There wasn't a bathtub in the bathroom, but
an outdoor bath. How good is this? But do you know what? The view's amazing,
but there's something missing. Hang on a minute. Yep. That's much better.
Cheers.
How many oysters have you eaten today, Jono? How many oysters have I eaten today? Yeah. At
least a couple of dozen, maybe more. You want more? Well, I've got more. Yeah. More tomorrow?
Yeah, we'll have to get back. Are you happy? Yeah. Hi. Hey. Hey. We're on Bruni Island and I went
and picked up a box of oysters earlier, but they're unshucked. Going to give you a little
run through how to shuck an oyster. Not a pro, but can get into them and can eat them. Let's go.
An oyster shucker is a great idea because it's super stiff and it's got a bit of protection for
your hands. Can't really do it with a normal knife because you'll probably snap it. They're
tough little buggers. Grab an oyster. You want to put it in something so you can hold it flat
so you don't spill all of that epic juice inside. You want to get in at the back end and pop her
open. Hopefully some of them, some of them are easier than others and some of them just break.
But that one just popped finally. And then she's connected over here and on the bottom. So we need
to run our knife under and cut her loose. There we go. That's the lid. Done with. It's still
connected down here, so we need to run our knife underneath and make sure it's all free. And then
hopefully still got all your epic juice and oyster and down the hatch. Bloody good. All right,
one more. All that practice, you should be pretty good by now. You'd hope so. All right, let's get
in there. Clean it out for me, please. You ready? Thank you. How's it? Salty. Beautiful.
Raining. We're so lucky with the weather. Yeah, but now. Now.
Sad face. Okay, I'm making a run for it. Hang on. What do I need to do? Do I need
to just lock up? You need to lock up and grab your bag. Is that it? Yeah. Have I got the keys?
And you lock the side ones? Yeah, we'll lock. Okay, grab your bag. Let's go.
Oysters? Oh yeah, let's get some oysters. We'll head to the beach first. Yep. One down, one to go.
What you got? Coffee. Coffee's good. Tea's up. Bella's taking some more oysters.
Are you going to jump out and order them this time? You are. How many are we getting? Three
and two. Well, three shucked and two unshucked. What? You didn't say that. I did. Why are you
getting so many? That's more than yesterday. Yeah, because we're giving them away today.
Not eating for ourselves. When are you going to have two? When are you shucking them? Over the
next couple of days. Yeah, he's already there. He's laughing already. He's the best customer ever.
I can't believe that you're back, sir. Wow, you were only here this time yesterday.
Hey, the last time we were here, you guys were just caravans. Yeah, that was Joey and Nicole
who started the business. It's a bit wet there. I was worried. There's a baker's that's in there
for you. This building? Yeah. It was six years. We've had it before. Tell you what,
you were getting slammed yesterday. Is that just the norm? So where are you guys heading off to?
We're heading back to Otago Bay now to give it to the family and then we're going to shuck
it off next tomorrow. Nice. Enjoy. Yeah, thank you. See you. Ta-da. Do you know what? I'm really
excited because we're about to meet a mate that we've only met on Instagram in real life. How
exciting. Let's go meet him, but first we'll go to get coffee. Get breakfast. Okay. So this is only
a small container. This is a 20 foot. This is a 20 footer. Hey, my name is Nick. I'm going to
show you around my 20 foot container and I'll show you around. Gin, gin, gin, gin, gin, gin,
gin, gin, gin, gin, gin, gin, gin, gin. What are you waiting for? Gin. We're going to have to get
you t-shirts that just say down the hatch. Match coming soon. Yeah, match coming soon.
