Meteorological spring began on March 1, marking the start of a three-month period used by weather forecasters for consistent climate record-keeping.
With many eagerly awaiting the warmer weather, meteorological spring actually
started this past sunday. Sure doesn't feel like it today. I'm trying to do
certainty. Meteorologist Alexa Bianco explains the difference from
astronomical spring. Alexa. Yes, I'm going to take it though. Spring has
already started in my eyes, but here's why
meteorological seasons and meteorological spring already began on
sunday march 1st for our climate records. We use essentially three month
period. So the winter months are december, january, february, spring is
march, april and may and so on because we need to have pretty much a 90 day
period because the dates of astronomical like to say winter or
spring, you know, they change from from year to year. Fall and spring serve as
transition periods between the extremes of winter and summer, which is the
fundamental concept behind meteorological seasons. According to the
National Centers for Environmental Information, it is much easier for
meteorologists and climatologists to calculate seasonal statistics year to
year with this setup. However, astronomical spring is based on the sun
and earth. N. C. E. I. Continues at the natural rotation of earth around the
sun forms the basis for the astronomical calendar in which we define seasons
with summer and winter solstice and fall and spring equinox. So in terms of
meteorology, we're in spring, but according to the sun angle wise, we are
not. That starts on March 20th. Working for you. Storm team meteorologist Alexa
Bianco.
