Breast cancer survivors share powerful stories during Springfield awareness event

It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and many people are being impacted by this disease, whether it be yourself, a loved one, or someone else you know. There is always a story to be heard. And that's why Representative Bud Williams and the Black Springfield Coalition are bringing the community together to hear from breast cancer survivors and encourage these warriors to keep fighting. Cancer is what you make it. Shining a light on the people being impacted by breast cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time highlighting the fight many go through. This is my third time. State Representative Bud Williams, the Black Springfield Coalition, and Rays of Hope hosting a tribute event getting the community to unite with a common purpose, raising awareness of breast cancer. A little hope and show some graciousness and support to those in the time of need. A night to promote regular screenings, to catch detections early, and to stand with those battling the disease. Survivors and fighters sharing their stories, telling the group how they are keeping strong and encouraging them to keep that strength as well. They are giving advice to others who are going through similar battles. Some saying you don't have to go through it alone. When people try to help you, let them. Don't shut them out. Others saying being open about it might not just help you. If you keep it a secret, you can't help someone. And one saying live each day to the fullest. To share a smile or a laugh, because tomorrow is not promised. Local advocates from Rays of Hope doing all they can to give support to those with cancer. One extending a hand to the community for over 25 years, raising awareness about a disease that hits close to home. My mom and one of my nieces died from this disease and doing an event like this today just makes me feel good to know that it's not just me that cares and we want to try to do something about this disease. According to the National Cancer Institute and American Cancer Society, over 13% of women, or approximately 1 in 8 people, will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Let this be a reminder that anyone facing this battle is not alone. Keep fighting, keep believing, and never give up.
