And that mission is to restore groundwater to a significant extent greatly enhancing the living environment
and provide subsurface irrigation to support highly productive agricultural systems through the fifth water harvesting technique
The water system features a seamless intricately connected layout This
characteristic is precisely the most intelligent and outstanding aspect of the entire water design on this property
Because in a hundred years from now this system will still be here
She will continue nurturing this land with strength and I do this for generations to come
And they will be the ones benefiting from it driving efforts to heal Mother Earth
Providing a sanctuary for all the little beings around us
We truly followed the trail to discover where the water source originated
There's a large stone slab right behind my property that has been completely cleared of vegetation
A massive torrent of water surged from that crack devastating and sweeping away everything in its path
You will learn about the seven key water harvesting techniques
This farm boasts seven reservoirs and remarkably unique water collection features
And this is truly one of the most innovative water systems I've ever witnessed
Where water is continuously circulated across the entire area to maximize absorption
Restore the entire waterfront and transform this place into a lush vibrant paradise
Yet just a few years ago this land had suffered severe
water shortages leading to serious soil degradation
But thanks to the creation of a complex system that channels and stores water from the hilltop down to the lower slope
The richness of nature has truly returned to this land
Abundant water supports vigorous grass growth meaning the soil becomes healthier
and produce higher-quality grazing feed for livestock
The system worked so effectively that even neighboring residents began joining in to expand it
Transform this individual effort into a basin-wide restoration movement
In this video you'll learn about the seven key water harvesting techniques
ransforming this land entirely into a thriving farm ecosystem
Thank you for having me here
Brenda I'm genuinely excited to see how this entire system works from top to bottom
This is the Taviarosa farm and when I first arrived
here the land was extremely dry and nearly desertified
But at the time I was certain there would be an abundant water supply
We collected plenty of moisture which surely meant there was groundwater present
We drilled one well then two wells and it was quite
a shock when we found absolutely no water at all
On the third drilling attempt we struck saline water again
About a year later we continued drilling and managed to find only
a small seepage flowing at a rate of about 5.5 liters per minute
After living here for about a year and a half I took a weekend trip away
Three days after returning I discovered my home had completely lost water
The water tank had a leak resulting in the loss of over 3 000 liters of water
So my dreams of starting my own farm were nearly
dissolved into thin air from the very starting line
In that very moment the true value of water became perfectly clear to me
The irony is that I live right here in this small valley
and have countless seasonal streams and a little brook
There's a powerful water current just above my house
That is precisely the fundamental issue with degraded
land and nutrient-poor soil lacking vegetative cover
Even in the rain the water merely washed away without soaking into the ground
But when you know how to harvest water into reservoirs and earthen
structures to retain it allowing water to slowly seep into the ground
At that time you not only stored water on the
ground but also replenished the underground aquifer
create a sustainable water source for extraction
I began researching the water source's potential for recovery
and I came across Jetwise’s projects from Elemental Ecosystem and
WaterStory My friend and colleague Jetwise from the WaterStory team
a community dedicated to teaching and inspiring people
worldwide on how to restore water circulation systems
Their team arrived and has been working here to develop water harvesting and storage systems
elp restore the water source and rehydrate the entire area
The way these waterfalls were constructed
The primary goal is to reinject the water back into the ground and allow it to percolate through the surrounding aquifers
And thus we have this evergreen lushness this carpet of drooping foliage
The coolness vitality and strong productivity of the place
Jet and I walked the entire plot surveying it together and jointly devised a plan
We truly traced the source to see where the water originated
There's a large rock right behind my property that's been completely cleared of vegetation
A massive torrent of water surged from that crack devastating and sweeping away everything in its path along the creek
The first thing Jet and I thought about was how we could capture that amount of water
o slow down the water flow right at the headwaters of the
stream Let's take a look together
Yes let's take a stroll around
The first water harvesting technique is the Sediment Trap Hole
designed at the highest point of the land to collect sediment
and prevent soil erosion caused by heavy rainwater rushing down the steep slope behind
So this is basically where everything begins
Yes it truly performs an incredibly remarkable function
All the area above here that you're seeing is the watershed above us
And this lake is retaining all the soil washed down from that hillside
That means the landowner up there cut
down all the trees and caused this erosion
That's exactly right—it had to endure the heaviest blows by absorbing the overwhelming surge
This pond prevents sediment and nutrients from clogging the rest of the system below
Let's go explore the rest of the system together—it's amazing
This seemingly simple pond actually serves
as an extremely vital ecological oasis
This lake lies deeper within the forest where you'll encounter
Hunai alongside a variety of animals from deer and lions to bears
What's so beautiful about it
This is a crucial factor for the farming system below
because when you provide wildlife with a safe and abundant habitat to live in
Especially predatory species such as the lion
They are less likely to conflict with your pets in open moonlit fields
This location sits high within the basin
Therefore everything from here onward we can manage through these systems
thus from this village gate you can see how the water always flows this way
It is truly an astonishing amount of water
The water then continues into the third-stage water harvesting
technology infiltration pools
These infiltration basins capture rainwater at strategic locations helping
maintain soil moisture across the entire landscape throughout the year
So right now we're standing directly beneath the
upstream area right below the lake we just saw
You should build large ponds in locations with sufficient space
Then along this stream you create small ponds that look like these little pouches
Yes they actually work extremely well
They are miniature ecosystems ideal habitats for a variety of animal species
and this tiny micropond will retain water throughout the entire summer
I can see that she's basically allowing the water to
gradually seep into the soil soaking in little by little slowly and steadily
and formed the underground aquifer beneath it Exactly
that slow and continuous process of water infiltration
It functions like a drip irrigation system moisturizing the entire landscape
Now we're shooting downward toward the moonlit grassland area
where the water flows down in a snake-like pattern over the steep steps
The land here also serves as the path we walk every day
Fourth water harvesting technique the water collection route
Water Harvesting Pathway
Most pathways and especially roads today
typically cause runoff and water loss
but the water collection path actually captures
rainwater and directs it toward reservoirs
Instead of letting it slip away wastefully
This is a sloping entrance ramp
Thus we are essentially diverting all the water from the hillside right here
And there's a small channel that directs water into another
channel which then flows straight into the reservoir
The overflow from that reservoir will continue flowing into the fifth water collection system
This feature is undoubtedly the most
intelligent and outstanding aspect
of the entire water design on this property So this is the upper pond
This lake receives water flowing down from the hillside above then
channels it to this terrace and directs it down to the lower lake
Although the two lakes are located quite close to each other instead
of allowing water to flow directly from one lake straight into the other
The water is again guided in a lateral flow
along the entire length of the pressure conduit
It flows back and forth forming a winding narrow path maximizing
the surface area of contact between the flowing water and the ground
This means more water will penetrate deeper into the ground across the entire landscape
More than anywhere I've ever visited this place is
the perfect testament to the precision of channel-based irrigation engineering
In this way we achieved a significantly higher rate of water
infiltration into the soil which is precisely what makes it truly unique
For the system to operate smoothly the terrain of
the site was analyzed with extremely high precision
The power of water and the way it finds its path are truly astonishing
Water from the lower terrace will likely flow onward into the
sixth water harvesting system the Patrapong Grassland Pond
This water management plan is not only beneficial for the ecosystem
but also supports a comprehensive grazing and regeneration system
Water is collected and stored in these unlined reservoirs
where some water gradually seeps into the soil to recharge the
shallow aquifer grasses and grazing plants flourish abundantly
anks to the increased warmth from greater abundance and this
creates ideal feeding conditions for the regenerative grazing system
There's our bull Iris coming over to say hello
Maybe we should back up a
bit Yes
You can now see how these cows
are working in perfect harmony
with the water systems Brenda oversees the grazing animals
with careful precision truly aiding in land restoration
This brings us to the seventh water harvesting technique
The technique might just
surprise you Pasture-raised livestock
This is why in the pasture-raising system
The grassland is divided into small sections
Animals graze on the grass
simultaneously enriching the soil with their manure
and then they will be moved to a new area to
allow the grazing land time to rest and regenerate
The cattle have finished grazing in this meadow
That's why we continuously graze
the grass down to a certain level give it
time to rest and then bring in more animals to graze again
This rotational grazing method effectively
increases the total grass productivity
because it accurately mics the very conditions under which grass
evolved to respond to being grazed by migrating herds of herbivores
This explosive growth combined with animal manure
will produce tons of rich organic matter in the soil
And for every 1% increase in organic matter conte
The soil will be able to absorb an additional 95 000 liters of water per 4 000 square meters
It greatly enhances the soil's water retention capacity
creating a self-sustaining cycle of regeneration
where the land becomes more fertile and the abundant
moisture in the soil continues to nourish the grass
Good harvest long-lasting extending deep into the dry season
Brenda's success didn't just save her land
And it also inspired the neighbors to follow suit
Hey can you walk along the steps and step through the gate
Hey Linda how have you been lately
When we first officially met
I took her around to see the results
and the work Jack and I have carried out over the
years she had fallen completely in love with it
Brenda's farm's water system is now connected beneath Linda's
property and together they are restoring this vast landscape
We are now stepping through a gateway
and we're truly walking on a staircase that during the rainy
season will become a shared stream flowing through both homes
Many people have asked me what we can do when we don't have full control over an entire watershed
My answer has always been about cooperation among
neighbors so it's truly wonderful to be standing here
and witness how neighboring landowners are genuinely
collaborating to restore the watershed on a large scale
Now we're standing in an area I like to call the small
lake where an underground spring rises to the surface
en flows down the slope and
collects in a small reservoir
where it remains until the reservoir is completely full
and throughout the time it flows down the slope it continuously
nourishes the soil constantly replenishing the groundwater
When this small pond fills up water will flow through the gate and spill over
the other side where the overflowing stream will feed the steps
And before you know it those steps will once again be
pouring water into my large reservoir called the Oasis
Thanks to the seamless cooperation among neighbors she
was able to proactively prepare in the Xiaoliu area
o welcome what we are certain will unfold at the Upper Realm
Therefore understanding what your neighbors are doing
Planning accordingly is crucial and
thanks to that we've avoided the
usual complications The true power lies in the synergistic effect
When neighbors came together to build this water
infrastructure they connected all the systems together
As a result we truly generate positive impacts across the entire watershed
And all these reservoirs are currently serving a vast array of different functions
Yet when combined they are collectively fulfilling a great and vital mission
and that mission is to restore groundwater to a
significant extent greatly enhancing the living environment
and provide subsurface irrigation to support highly productive agricultural systems
The implementation of this management role
united support of the flowing waters
advancing efforts to heal Mother Earth
bringing hope to all small beings
Here is a place to dwell and enjoy life Just as we
have been blessed with the privilege to live here
Many people ask me why I do this work Because
in 100 years this system will still be here
It will continue to nourish this land with
strength watering every corner of this valley
I do this for future generations and they will be the ones to
benefit from it If you have the
ability to carry out this work
o revive a degraded piece of land and
restore it to a fertile thriving state
That truly is a highly worthwhile use of your
resources The entire basin
here will be put to good use
From such structures this
land can now be cultivated
in a regenerative way for generations to come
one after another in the future
