Hello everyone today we're painting galaxies
using watercolor You 've probably already seen plenty of that on YouTube or Instagram
You can simply paint these and give them as gifts hang them up yourself or use them as lettering templates
For the galaxies you'll need watercolor paint a mixing palette a little water and brushes
Also large and small brushes—so big and small a mix like that would be great
And of course watercolor paper and you'll also need something like this adhesive tape here
You can also just use regular tape or washi tape depending on what you have available and what you'd like to use
I'm using this now and the point is that we'll be gluing the watercolor paper down onto the table
One reason is that it gives us a nice border
We don’t paint all the way to the edge of the paper instead we leave about 5 mm uncoated
Moreover this is also due to the fact that the paper does not curl
When working with highly water-based paints the paper absorbs a lot of water and can then warp
We don't want that so we'll secure it in place and let it dry that way
Then you can simply pull it off and the paper will still be relatively smooth
As you can see I've already prepared some colors here
I'm using purple a touch of pink red and blue tones
You'll need a bit more of the dark ones for that
I still have my remaining watercolors here We'll mix the colors a bit more then
The great thing is that with watercolor paint you can be incredibly flexible
We'll start with very bright colors and gradually work our way upward making the galaxy progressively darker
When working with watercolors if you want very light areas dilute your paint with a lot of water
Alright let's just get started I want to create a light area here
It's not a problem at all if a touch of white shows through in your lighter area
That's really no issue whatsoever
That's how it should look
Then I'll create one more large bright area here
You can also take some inspiration from galaxies on Google
There are some truly beautiful images there
Take a look at what a galaxy looks like
As you can see I'm already working with quite a bit of water here
I want the colors to blend into one another
That creates a very very beautiful effect
The only things you need to paint a galaxy are patience and time
As I just mentioned you're building the image slowly
Be careful that no color builds up in the waves when your paper starts to curl
That looks very very unappealing when drying
That's why it's better to wipe off the color let it dry and then apply one more coat of paint
I'll wait a moment longer so the paint can dry a bit more now
Then I'll begin my second followed by my third layer
After a brief wait and drying period I'll proceed immediately
I'm taking the blue here now undiluted
I'm going to keep moving forward here and building up more and more
The color no longer blends quite as much with the other color now since it's already dried
Now you just need to add a little water to the tip of your brush and gently blend the edges so it softens slightly
You can already see here that the dark blue gives this galaxy its first sense of depth
I'm adding a bit more depth to the pink and lilac tones as well
To make the blue tone even darker just mix in a bit more black
And now darkness brings out so much more as you can see here
Our galaxy is now dry it just needs a bit more time but go ahead and give it the time it needs for the color to fully cure
A galaxy isn't truly complete until it has stars so that's what we're doing now
There are two ways to do this—I'll show you now using the brush just like this
Or an old toothbrush I grabbed one like that while brushing
And here you have some white paint I've already mixed a bit so you can just take a coat of white
Then just do something a little bit here
And now you just go over it like that with your finger
With the toothbrush technique you need to be a bit careful because sometimes the points aren't quite precise
but then sometimes you end up with a few streaks
But it's an excellent way to distribute tiny fine white specks across our galaxy
Now I'll show you the option using the
brush I'll just mix it with a little water
Now just hold up your index finger and we'll let the brush simply tap against your index finger
And notice this do you see
That's how we end up with such enormous stars
And as mentioned it's crucial that the galaxy is already completely
dry because otherwise our white dots would blur into the dark color
And that's exactly what we don't want at all We want beautiful clear stars here
The less paint on your brush the smaller and finer your stars will become
That's it Pretty simple
And the effect is totally cool
And we've now got a proper galaxy finished
Now we can finally remove the paper here and release our galaxy
Doesn't that look beautiful
This is what our finished galaxy looks like
You can easily frame this now and give it as a gift You
could even add some nice calligraphy on it for instance
Can you write something nice on it now with white paint
Or you can just leave it however you like
Doesn't that look great
And as I said you really don't have to be incredibly incredibly talented or an artist
but simply with a few tricks and tips you can easily recreate your own galaxy at home
Thank you for watching and see you next time Bye
