In this video I visit the Lake District in some awesome misty conditions and I
managed to get a shot like this and some others which I'll talk about later but
first of all let's go back a day and visit those amazing misty and rainy
conditions.
Morning everybody, fantastic to see you again. Look at this, we've got autumn, we've got a bit of
fog and the colours are amazing. I've been here for six days now, the first
four days running a workshop and unfortunately we had quite flat light
and more importantly we didn't get a lot of rain which didn't really make the
colours pop but we did get some stunning light but today I've come out and I
think I'm hopefully gonna get some fog and some of these amazing autumn trees
in this stunning mist and everything's wet so it looks fantastic. What I'm going
to do is I'm going to show you when I get somewhere how I try and pick out a
composition so I'm going to sort of scan the whole area and look around and show
you what works and what doesn't so we'll get a little bit higher find a good spot
and see what we can find. So I've taken a little bit of a risk because I've come a
little bit higher near Tornhausen, just one of the hills around there and the
risk is that I knew there's gonna be a little bit more wind this morning and
you can see by these trees here that there definitely is wind. Whereas if I stayed
low I'd have probably minimized that but my thought is that as the sort of mist
clears I might have some sort of layers and distant views and I was up here
yesterday and that worked really well I was here with my family and Pebbles and
you can see that you know it is clearing a little bit in the background so
sometimes you've just got to risk it. I might have made the wrong decision but I'm
committed to this decision now I'm not going to make the mistake I made the other week
where I just kept changing location I'm going to stay here and really
concentrate on finding something good and just hope the wind doesn't get too
strong because it's difficult because I'm gonna have quite slow shutter speed
and obviously these leaves are going to move right onward. So as I'm walking up I've
spotted a composition here which is changing all the time because of the
mist but I've got this little bit of rock here I've got these ferns I've got
these silver birches which I've just as you can see the camera just aligned
quite well and then there's a patch of open ground and then some silver birches
in the background what I like about is that separation between these foreground
silver birches and the background silver birches so I'm going to set up my Z7
here I'll have a 24 to 70 lens on it's probably going to be around about 35
millimeters something like that and I'll shoot this it looks really nice
okay so I'm going to have my 24 to 70 on I'm not going to bother with a polarizer at the
moment because I don't think I'm going to need it and what's going to be a
better idea is just put this on to stop some any of the mist coming on my lens
so I'm going to go with this see how we go right okay so I'm nearly at the top
now I've just stopped again because there's a nice composition here but I'm
going to go up here and just show you I came up here first and I like this tree
here there's a lot of nice trees around here there's this this one there's some
trees over there and then there's some sort of scraggly trees over there as
well but I like this one can get quite close for him a little bit above it so
then what I was trying to do was just trying to find a way that I could align
the branches of this tree and and the trunks of this tree with the other trees
and try and create a nice grouping of trees so if I just take you back down
here I can sort of show you what I mean now falling over and you can see that
here I've got this tree this tree this tree this tree and these trees here and
I've just been careful to not chop off the top of this tree now on the video
it is chopping it off but it's a different aspect ratio to the actual
photo and because it's foggy we don't have any defined lines in the background
the fog helps to allow us to include full trees a little bit easier without
making it look really bad and a harsh line so this looks pretty good I've
chosen to be careful of the branches moving so I've upped it to ISO 400 I'm
going to take one ISO 100 400 and 800 with a hope that I can use a lower ISO
one if the branches don't move too much it's really really nice here but it's
changing quite quickly I can now see the mountain over there so I'll get taking
it okay so I've arrived at the top of this sort of small hill in the Lake
District and as you can see the clouds have come in literally about five
minutes maybe ten minutes ago I could see the mountain over there but now I
can't but I really like these trees over here so what I'm going to try and
do is stay here for maybe an hour or two and just wait to see if the fog
just sort of blows through I think it's worth persevering because if I persevere
I think I've got more chance of getting something good the fog's just getting
worse and worse I can't see much now so I'm sure it'll clear a little bit but
I'm just going to keep persevering and just hope that I just get a little bit
less fog I might be able to use some of the rocks as foreground then pick out
some nice trees just in the distance I'm sure there's a shot here I think it's
time for a coffee and just sort of contemplate what I can get because you
need to observe more and shoot less homemade flapjack can't beat that so
winds definitely getting up a little bit but I do think there is a composition
down here I've been looking at and staring at it for the last sort of ten
minutes I think I'm gonna walk a little bit further down I think if I'm closer
to the trees I might just be able to get the trunk of one tree as a little bit of
detail and then you know the trees fading off into the background there's
also a lone tree over there but it's it's literally so foggy I don't think
that's going to work so I'm going to try over there first see what happens it'll
be a little bit sheltered down there just keep moving around because I think
the fog's just going to change I'll get something okay I've got a shot here
which I think is pretty cool we've got this silver birch here which has pretty
much lost all its leaves so I think it tells a little bit of a story as well
because this one's higher up probably a little bit more in the wind it's a
little bit more exposed just got a few of its leaves left the ones in the
background a little bit lower down have kept their leaves and so what I'm going
to do is I'm going to have this one in the foreground it's not attenuated by so
much fog the definition of it so this will be quite well defined and the ones
in the background will be a little bit soft and then I'm framing this tree down
here with these branches I've got to be careful about shutter speed because it's
moving quite quickly so I have to I'm gonna have to up the ISO to get a
faster shutter speed because I don't want to lose depth of field too much
I'm going to shoot about f8 focusing just probably just past this tree I get
as much focus as I can in that direction but not worry too much about it dropping
off and then this tree pin sharp
something extra special about walking around on a fell in the woodlands when
you're on your own I find that it's when that I can sort of think about things
and I always feel that when I'm on my own I'm just that little bit more
creative I feel like all my focus is about observing the things around me
one of the things that I find that if I have my camera with me I never find as
good shot you know what I tend to do is put my camera down and either sit on a
rock and just look and try and see how the light is hitting the side of the
trees or how you know the leaves are catching the light maybe how the
weather's changing all those sort of things make a really big difference I
find to to my photography and to the ability to find compositions and sounds
probably a bit cliche but connect to the nature and the things around me
this it doesn't get any better than this this is epically good and with no light
it's quite flat but this is just beautiful
we swear it's easy he the way right which karma down here so we go back to
the studio have a look at the photos I'm sure there'll be a few to print out and
have a chat about what a lovely morning so I was really pleased with the
conditions and I'm really pleased with the photos they got some of which I've
just showed you I just want to show you this print actually so this was the one
where I was talking about this tree here and I was a little bit lower on the shot
that I showed in the video but I took one from higher up as well and I
actually think that this just works a little bit better I really like the just
balance of this tree without the leaves on it to these trees I feel like
actually in this case getting the whole tree in has probably helped a little bit
as well and I really like this bit of rock here which I think works really well
I should have taken more shots of the rock in the misty conditions I feel like
that rock that sort of gray color in that rock and the gray color and the
silver birch works really well together but I'm being picky overall I was I was
pretty pleased with these images and I'm probably going to put two or three of
them up on my website for sale so so look out for that I also want to show
you a couple of other shots taken from the morning before which was probably a
little bit mistier and no wind I didn't do a video then I was out with my family
and pebbles we were just we were just hiking in in the fells but this was one
one of the shots so so this was a shot that I took you can see that there's a
little bit more mist here and I just picked out this single tree I think this
almost works I think what I think I got a little bit carried away there with the
mist and the conditions and probably I could have done with just maybe moving
around a little bit maybe moving to the right a little bit just to give a little
bit of gap here again I'm being particularly picky but yeah I really
like this I think it's a lovely shot I love the bracken the color of the
bracken was just amazing it just sort of sets off the bottom of this image and
then the other one was this image here which was an image when I was walking
down and just just a silver birch was just catching the light really nicely
most of the mist had gone but we had this dying bracken this brown bracken
these grasses through the middle and then these silver birch trees and quite
often in woodland photography just going a little bit tighter and just getting
I've got this silver birch this one and this one and then this old silver birch
in the background has worked really well and I really like this I think the
texture in this and it just looks so good printed yeah I think this has come
out so well one thing I also wanted to reiterate was shutter speed in some of
these images so certainly if I go back to this one here you know I had to up
the ISO to ISO 400 you shouldn't be worried about that too much it wasn't a
huge amount of dynamic range I wasn't too bothered about that you know there
was no deep shadows and it wasn't too dark so I I wasn't too bothered about
pulling out some of the shadow detail but I wanted a faster shutter speed so
this was I think a thirtieth of a second it just managed to get the sharpness on
these leaves here which I think was important for this particular shot
because I wanted to capture that leaf detail so don't worry about upping your
ISO to get that shot which I mentioned in the video so thanks ever so much for
watching until next Sunday bye
