I'm confident NATO collectively and Allies individually will similarly act to break
down barriers and unleash the potential of defence industry on both sides of the Atlantic.
The NATO of the future is not an alliance in which Allies are unhealthily dependent on the
United States and in which the United States knows that it has capable partners who are ready,
willing and able to defend our freedom and security.
So NATO General Secretary Mark Rutte meeting with President Trump yesterday
to dissuade him from pulling out of the alliance after the meeting President Trump sounded off
on Truth Social saying, quote, this, NATO wasn't there when we needed them and they
won't be there if we need them again. Remember, Greenland, that big, poorly run piece of ice.
This is the president reportedly is considering a plan to remove US troops from NATO countries
who refuse to help in Iran. Let's bring in Michael Allen,
former National Security Council senior director under President George W. Bush.
So the president did not say I want out of NATO,
but extremely disappointed NATO is not playing a role, at the very least, letting us use their
bases in Spain's situation. They didn't let us use their airspace.
Yeah, look, I think some of these Western European nations, not NATO per se,
Eastern or Western European nations have been obnoxious. I think them saying this is not our
fight is going to have negative repercussions here in the United States for some time to come.
But our decisions on where the military ought to have bases should be according to what the
military and national security need is. I have my doubts about whether we still need him in Spain.
And so if a review took him out of Spain, a forced posture review,
I think I'd be comfortable with that. But I'd be I'd be wary of trying to get out of Germany.
I'd be wary of trying to get out of Italy. Let's affix blame where it belongs,
which is left of center Western European governments and not NATO.
Well, Italy said can't use the Sicily base. What are we paying for it for?
So if we didn't brief them and get them involved early and that's how they want
to hold their breath in the corner and have a tent or temper tantrum, go ahead.
But not letting us use their bases, which I consider way out of bounds. And I don't
think people are going to forget that. But Reagan dealt with some of this, too, correct?
Yeah, he did. And look, Europe has played games with us like this through the past.
And we ought to read him the riot act, especially Italy, when they have a semi friendly government.
We ought to be able to explain to them that they need to be with us
in these in extremist type situations. So, yeah, I think this is going to have negative
repercussions. They need to make it up to us by continuing to invest in their defense
industrial base so that they can actually play a role in future contingencies.
Because that's the other part of this, Brian. They don't have a lot of capability. I want
them to join in on maybe escorts or monitoring of the Strait of Hormuz, assuming we get past
this ceasefire period. But they're not great at this and they don't have the capabilities of the
United States military. So we shouldn't kid ourselves about how helpful they were going
to be in the first place. And keep in mind,
they're not even going to school on what's happening in Ukraine and Russia.
They are not prepared for any drone threat in Europe. And they're seeing how close
they are and they're seeing how lethal the Shahed drones are and the role it's playing
in the Ukraine-Russia war. But now they're scrambling, according to Business Insider,
to come up with a plan. Quote, before the U.S. conflict with Iran and Russia's full-scale
invasion of Ukraine, cheap strike drones were used to attack energy targets in the Middle East,
setting the stage for a new type of warfare. NATO, however, ignored the warning signs.
A top alliance commander told this, and we know this for a fact, now it's scrambling to catch up
rapidly changing modern combat tactics. And guess who should be able to cash in? Ukraine.
Because on the fly, they innovate it. Right, right. Well, that's one of the
most interesting things about the war in Ukraine is just how frequently the technology with regard
to drones changes. We, the United States military, I think are doing a lot of lessons learned.
We're trying to figure out how these drones have been employed. And of course,
NATO and the Europeans need to do the same. NATO is honestly a big, unwieldy bureaucracy,
so I don't doubt that they're having trouble absorbing some of these lessons, but we have to.
This is the future of warfare. Drones are part and parcel of every targeting decision in addition to
first-person drones, which chase down Russian soldiers in and of themselves. So we got to study
this hard and get ready and lean on the Ukrainians to teach us. Yes. And by the way, it's very
important Ukraine is successful. They're the second biggest army in Europe and by far, pound
for pound, the best fighting force. Poland has implored members to take the U.S. threats of
leaving NATO seriously. They are taking it seriously, paying under 2% Spain, Portugal,
Albania, Belgium, and Canada. They're the freeloaders. Thanks so much, Mike Allen.
Appreciate it. Thank you.
David, we also wait to see what happens with NATO. And Caroline Leavitt said yesterday that
Trump would likely bring up leaving NATO. Mark Rutte was pressed about that twice after the
meeting. He sidestepped the question, interestingly. Some pontificate because
Trump cannot get out unilaterally. He needed to their vote of the Senate that he would do this,
and now there's Wall Street Journal reporting to that effect. Trump team explores punishment
for NATO countries that didn't support the Iran war. Socialist-led Spain may be the first.
Absolutely. Well, they're not only feckless, but they are actively thwarting our operations. I
mean, they are preventing our military, mostly our planes, to get into their bases. And these
are bases, by the way, that we pay for in Europe and in other places, other territories of the UK
and Italy and France. I mean, first of all, the markets turned around today on the good news that
a couple of ships went through. It started out very negative and it's now positive in all three
indexes. So that's pretty good stuff. But the bottom line is the European economies are doing
very badly because they depend on the Strait of Hormuz much more than we do. They have also gone
in full bore into these crazy green energy plans that haven't worked out. So they're paying four
times as much for their energy as the United States is. And we have a lot of means to pressure
them to get into the game and save their own skin instead of not only asking us to save their skin
for us, but then not helping at all and thwarting the activities we're doing to take on Iran.
Mr. President, are you willing to end this conflict with Iran charging tolls
for passage through the strait? Us charging tolls? Iran. What about us charging tolls?
Is that something you're considering? I'd rather do that than let them have them run.
Why shouldn't we? We're the winner. We won. Okay. They are militarily defeated. The only thing they
have is the psychology of, oh, we're going to drop a couple of mines in the water. All right.
No, we I mean, we have a concept where we'll charge tolls. Okay. I thought you meant us.
