The Best Ploughman's Lunch in The UK.
Say no more!
My word, what an absolutely gorgeous day today.
Not a cloud in the sky.
Unbelievable.
And we've got this for the next, I think, couple of weeks.
I am not moaning, I'm loving it.
I'm in bone ass today.
And what do you want more on a day like this than fish and chips?
No, you don't want fish and chips in this weather at all.
You want a ploughman's lunch.
Now, I am told by Google that the best
ploughman's lunch in the UK is right here in bone ass in a place called Hole
in the Wall or Hole in Wall or something like that.
It's here, it's up the road.
We're going to go and try it out.
The only thing I can't have is the blue
cheese, if there is any blue cheese on it, because I'm allergic to blue cheese.
We're going to go and mark it out of 10.
It's a big claim, the best ploughman's lunch in the UK.
That is a huge claim.
And there's certain elements of a ploughman's lunch that has to be there.
And if it isn't, it can't be classed as a ploughman's.
Now, I also want you to tell me in the
comments section, where did the ploughman's lunch originate from?
I think it was when a farmer went out on a field or something and his wife wrapped
a piece of bread and some cheese and stuff up in a napkin or something.
I'm pretty sure that's something to do with it.
But let me know in the comments section.

Do you know what? I think I'm going to get the drone up
and go and have a look at what Bowness looks like from a little bit of a height.
Now, how do I do this? I think I might need to go over here.
Here goes.
Oh, I hope it's not going to hit that roof.
Might be coming back.
Where is it?
Is it coming back?
Oh, it's coming back to me.
Here it comes.
Now, I'm going to try and fly it manually so we can see the boats over there.
So here goes.
It's always a relief when I bring the thing back down because I was controlling
that last one with my phone and not the controller.
And if it goes out of range, kind of has a mind of its own.
Wow. Look at this.
I have got to say,
in summer, I don't think there's any better place to be in the world, really.
We have some amazing places in the UK.
Wow, the view.
Today's fantastic.
I love this weather. I just want it to stay now.
Oh, I've got a cranky.
Dog's going after a woman.
Come on onwards, I'm getting out of here.
Now, I just met a gentleman from Liverpool
who's lived up here since I think about 14 years or more.
And he lives next to the hole in the wall.
And I told him about it and he said, yeah, it's a fantastic,
a fantastic ploughman's lunch.
So I am looking forward to it onwards.
Hey, what's happened here?
The boats have
sunk.
Look at that, they've flooded.
Don't know what's gone on with them.
These are all right on the other side, though.
Look, I'd love my own yacht.
Not good on water.
I mean, I wouldn't want to sail it.
I'd probably just have a party on it.
But I'd love my own yacht, maybe not in Windermere,
maybe in Majorca or somewhere, I don't know, or the south of France.
Not nothing wrong with here, it's just that the weather is not always this good.
That's where I want to be, outside there in the beer garden.
I've got to drive back to Leeds in a bit, so I can't have a beer.
It's going to have to be a Coke Zero.
Look at them.
Fantastic.
Now, I think it's round here somewhere, behind the church, from memory.
Can't be sure, can't be certain.
I'm just taking a wild guess.
I found the guy who I spoke to earlier on.
See, I wasn't telling a lie, I wasn't fibbing.
You're from Liverpool originally.
Tony. Right, how long have you lived here?
About 50 years.
50 years? No, I said 14, so I just got that information wrong.
A long time.
Hole in the wall. Hole in the wall, round the corner.
Round the corner.
Ploughman's lunch. Fantastic.
Massive, if you're hungry.
Yeah, I am hungry.
So a nice salad, pork pie.
Yeah. And a nice pint.
Have you had one before? I've had one before.
It's supposed to be, watch this, the lady's going to reverse into us.
Thanks. It's supposed to be the best in the UK.
No way. Yeah, well, yeah, that's good.
You'll enjoy it. Right.
Nice location.
Whereabouts is the hole in the wall?
It's round the corner here. Round the corner.
Donna, how are you?
Are you alright?
Hello.
Hi. Nice to meet you.
I'm not sure I want to be on camera.
I'm going for a ploughman's lunch.
Oh, enjoy. Yeah, thank you very much.
It's what you need. It's what you need when it's hot weather like this.
So is it round here then, is it?
To the left. To the left.
So down here to the left.
You'll see it on the right hand side.
I knew it was down this way.
Nice to meet you, mate.
Do you find Bowness has got busier and busier in the last few years?
It's always been, it's always been the tourist hotspot.
Yeah.
You know, out of season during the week's quiet, but the weekends, that's got busier.
And years ago, it was quiet on the weekend.
Which is your favourite bar round here?
Well, I go The Hole in the Wall because I live round the corner from The Hole in the Wall.
So it's literally two minute walk for me.
Oh, it's good. They're all pretty good.
They're all independent. Yeah.
So there's no chains, no chain restaurants.
It's quite, it's quite popular, isn't it, around Bowness?
Churchill's, that's owned by a snooker player, Tony Knowles.
Is it? Yeah.
So that's owned by Tony Knowles?
Yeah, yeah. Wow.
Yeah. I haven't had it a long time.
Do you ever see him? Yeah, he normally does the garden.
He doesn't work.
Oh, blimey.
Ah, Hole in, what is Hole in Tip Wall? Hole in Tip Wall.
Hole in Tip Wall. Hole in Tip Wall.
Here we go. I'm looking forward to this.
Thank you very much.
That's cool. Nice to meet you mate.
Right, so I've ordered the ploughman's lunch
and a large Diet Coke and that came to a total of £20.80.
Nice to see the Hartley's sign in there from Alverston as well.
I remember that brewery many, many years ago.
They've got a menu here, which is quite nice.
Got the Hole in the Wall ploughman's,
which is what I've had, which is £17.50.
Breadless campy six, £16.50, lasagna, beef and ale pie.
Ooh, do you know what?
I forgot to ask them to take the blue cheese off, but never mind.
We'll just have to leave that bit.
Otherwise you'll be seeing me on my way to hospital.
They've also got jacket potatoes,
fresh prepared sandwiches and kids meals as well.
So, do you know what? It's nice here.
What a lovely, it's lovely just to sit outside a pub.
So cheers.
Just a shame I haven't got a lager or something.
Right, well,
I don't think I'm going to be able to eat all this.
This is just absolutely mad.
We've got the bread on here, which is nice
and fresh and slightly warm, I think.
We've got a selection of, I mean, crisps on top of there.
This is just, this is just mad.
I can't even, there's so much stuff on it.
We've got pickled onions in there as well.
We've got celery.
We've got egg.
We've got tomatoes.
Numerous amounts of cheeses in there.
I mean, how much stuff is there on here?
This is absolute madness.
We've got the pork pie on here as well.
There's your pork pie.
This is, we've got ham on here.
Great, nice bit of ham as well.
Just look at that.
Proper ham, that.
Orange.
I'm just gobsmacked.
Before we go any further, just take a closer look, my friends.
This is mental.
I don't know where to start with this.
I think you're probably better off sharing this.
We've got, whoa, we've got grapes on here as well.
Apple.
I don't think there's anything missing off of it.
We've got cucumber.
This is just mad, I don't even know where to start.
But how many different cheeses have we got on here?
Got some onion on there as well, some raw onion.
I mean, good grief, this is just madness.
Where do you start?
I honestly don't know where to start with this.
Let's try the ham.
I'm going to have to use my fingers.
Wow, that is good ham.
The bread, lovely and soft.
I just don't know, I think this is for sharing really, isn't it?
In fact, I think it says on it.
So much cheese.
We've also got the Branston pickle here as well.
Oh my word, it's just falling.
I'm going to put, whoa, it keeps falling.
It's a mountain of food.
That bread is excellent bread.
Got coleslaw on there as well.
What have we got here?
It's potato salad or something.
I think that's potato salad.
Pork pie.
What have we got here in this little dish?
Are they carrots?
Mmm, that is tasty.
I'm not going to finish all this.
They might have to take some back with me.
Right, I'm managing to get down a little bit.
Got some beetroot in here as well.
I don't think there's anything, there's nothing missing off of this ploughman's.
Got some miniature pickled onions as well.
And some miniature gherkins, I think.
Pickled gherkins as well.
This is just, this is just never ending.
What is that there as well?
I think we've got, is that quiche?
They've even got quiche on here.
This is just crazy.
Wow.
Oh dear.
I'd highly recommend you bring in somebody with you to share this
because it's just, it's a little daunting, but excellent food.
Oh, my word.
I'm getting down here, but I don't think I'm going to be able to eat all that cheese.
That's absolutely crazy.
This is really nice cheese now, that one.
I'm not sure what that one is.
Hmm, that's very tasty.
Oh, my word.
I think this is going to have beaten me, to be fair.
There's just so much food on here.
There's also a lot of salad on there.
I don't mind leaving the salad.
The apples, lovely as well, lovely and tasty and fresh.
Hmm.
I mean, this is supposed to be the best ploughman's lunch in the UK.
And I'm going to say, they're probably right.
This is absolutely nuts.
Hmm.
Is there cranberry in that?
That's gorgeous.
Hmm.
It's just a lot of it.
If you're going to try it out for yourself, bring somebody with you.
I'll see you outside.
Wow. I'll do my best.
Right, let's head back to the car.
My word, I couldn't finish all that and I can't take this.
They said, do you want to take some back with you?
But the cheese would have gone off by the time I get back to, which way is it?
By the time I get back to Leeds.
That was just absolutely madness.
Marks out of ten.
I'll tell you when I get back to the car.
I mean, that's crazy.
I don't think I've ever seen a ploughman's lunch that big.
There was nothing missing apart from somebody to share it with.
Right, marks out of ten. Ten plus.
Unbelievable that was.
I mean, that's crazy.
I don't think there was anything missing on that.
I mean, I'm speechless, to be honest.
It's a ten plus. Go and try it out for yourself.
Bonas on Windermere, Holent Wall.
Fantastic place.
Get there while it's summer, sit outside, have yourself a ploughman's.
The only thing I would say is take somebody
with you to share it because that is just huge.
I mean, that's just madness. Thanks for watching.
