This I think is a unique experience and I think that it shows exactly what's going on around this country.
Put your hands behind your back. It's simple.
Put your hands behind your back.
Cuidado!
A man was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers
as he left the Roderick, Ireland courthouse on Wednesday just after 3 in the afternoon.
Springfield attorney Kedar Ismail said his client, Javier Serrano Pujols,
a Dominican national, was relatively happy
as he was walking out of the courthouse following an evidentiary suppression hearing.
But that didn't last long.
You're gonna get sprayed. You're gonna get sprayed, bro.
You're gonna get sprayed?
I get a frantic call from his wife.
I can't really make out everything that she's saying,
but I hear her distraught, she's screaming, she's yelling in Spanish,
and she said, they have him, they have him.
Video shows Serrano Pujols on the ground surrounded by ICE officers
on State Street between the courthouse and Symphony Hall.
His attorney said he is facing charges involving drug trafficking and carrying a dangerous weapon,
but has been out on pretrial conditions since 2024,
not making any missteps during the process.
I understand that he's charged with something, but what happens to an innocent until proven guilty?
Ismail said as of Friday, he has not gotten the chance to speak with his client,
but he does know he's currently at a detention center in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
I have reached out to his immigration attorney.
We will be having a meeting this weekend in order to just discuss
some of his options and the things that we can do in his upcoming hearing.
But in the meantime, Ismail is still shocked with the situation.
How his client, who has been showing up to all of his hearings as needed,
gets detained in just minutes.
This is ridiculous.
People are scared to come to court in order to answer for the things that they're charged for.
So how does this whole innocent until proven guilty,
if people are having the fear of coming here to answer to charges?
Multiple organizations have filed lawsuits against the Trump administration
for arrests outside of immigration courthouses,
saying those detained are being denied due process.
But immigration enforcement remains a top priority for the Trump administration.
