Craig Breslow has some work to do and he should do it sooner than later.
Yes, it's only Memorial Day weekend and the trade deadline is still three months away.
But if the Red Sox want to save this season, Breslow needs to make some moves and get a big bat or two soon.
Here are my thoughts.
We have full confidence in the players in that room to perform at the very highest level and get us back to playing baseball in October.
These Red Sox won't even snip October if they don't add to this offense.
Their roster is flawed and needs a boost and Craig Breslow knows that.
Ultimately, the accountability for the roster falls on me.
And this was a challenging roster to manage just given kind of the position player group.
That's something that I acknowledge.
Admitting that and doing something about it are two different things.
And if the Red Sox want to compete, they need to get uncomfortable.
They lack a presence in their lineup that opposing teams fear.
So why not pursue a guy like Mike Trout who's having a resurgent season?
Or the Padres, Fernando Tati, who has the potential to be a feared hitter.
To do that, you're going to have to offer a young pitcher like Connelly Early or Peyton Tolley.
Or trade someone like Jaron Duran while he's hot.
The Padres have often been rumored to covet Duran.
To come in here and get a sweep is good.
This is and always has been the business of baseball.
And since the Sox won their last World Series, John Henry has run this team like another asset in his portfolio.
And when you run a business, there are times where change is needed.
And the time is now for these Red Sox before it's too late.
Sox pitching has been great.
It's time to get a big bat or two to help this team out.
Your move, Craig.
I'm Butch Stearns.
