Out of the hunt for a black bear that covered a lot of ground in Montgomery County in recent days and raised a lot of eyebrows in the process.
Only Action News was there today as police and wildlife officials found and tranquilized that bear after the most recent sighting in Whitpain Township.
Tonight, it's on its way back to the woods, far, far away, after meandering many miles and into many backyards.
Action News' John Paul live with it. Bear was finally found today. John, you had a front row seat to this story.
I sure did. I was kind of in my element. You know, I love doing the bear stories, and I was from me to the camera close to that bear.
Let me show you where it was captured. We're in a neighborhood in Whitpain Township. This is the area, the wooded area behind these homes.
That is where the bear was tranquilized, and we watched as game wardens dragged him out and put him into a trap.
After days on the run throughout Montgomery County, this black bear has finally been caught.
State game wardens managed to corner the bear in a wooded area near 2nd Avenue and Skipback Pike in Whitpain Township behind some homes.
They used a tranquilizer dart to finally bring him down.
He came right out like 30 yards, and he bedded down, and I put one right in the shoulder, and he ran a little bit, crumpled up next to a fence, and was asleep.
The capture comes after numerous sightings across the area. Since Tuesday, it's been spotted in Tallahassee Township, Lansdale, and everywhere in between.
People snapped pictures and caught it on video as it roamed the area trying to find a home and causing quite a stir along the way.
Look at the bear. There's a bear there.
Diane Williams saw it walking across the street today near her home. She couldn't believe what she was seeing.
I was frightened. I would have loved to have taken a picture, but of course, I was too scared.
There was just numerous calls coming in repeatedly, seeing it in people's backyards, so we set up just a perimeter to try and locate it.
After that perimeter was set up, the game wardens came in with the tranquilizer guns and this large bear trap.
After a couple of hours, wardens came out with the bear ready to relocate.
He's going to go back up north to an area where there won't be such a risk of human-wildlife conflict.
He's on his way there right now.
So, Brian, while you were there watching what they were doing, they actually had another syringe and they injected it into that bear,
and that's helping it wake up.
They wanted to make sure it was awake before they hauled him up north.
He looks like he's doing just fine, and he's going to get a new home in a safer place.
We're live tonight in Whitpain Township, Montgomery County.
John Paul, Channel 6 Action News.
Brian?
When there's a bear on the loose, John Paul won't be far behind.
John, thank you.
