Traveling from Texas to the National HDT Rally in Hutchinson, Kansas is going to be a 2 day journey. What can happen overnight, you say?!? That's what we thought. Until we pulled in to the RV area at Riverwind Casino in Norman, Oklahoma. Come along with us on this 2 day journey as we travel in our custom Spacecraft 5th wheel trail north. We're big but we are definitely an RV! The casino overnight parking area does not think so.

A couple journeys from Texas to Kansas in their heavy-duty truck and RV to attend a National HDT Rally. Their trip involves meticulous departure preparations, a social visit in Dallas, and navigating logistical challenges, including a parking dispute and road closures, before successfully arriving at the fairgrounds in Hutchinson for a two-week event.
Uh-oh, security. All right, I called to make sure. We've never had this happen in nine years of full
timing. We have never been rejected because we're a semi-truck. Don't you pull out in front of us.
I cannot get through here. You can't get through here? Oh my. Ever wondered what it's like to
travel in an HDT pulling a huge RV? Well, next couple of days that's what we're doing.
And if you're curious, why don't you come along and find out.
It is moving day today. Before we can leave, I've got to disconnect Starlink.
And that's all it is. I'm ready to take it down. So I've got the side pole mounting system right
there for Starlink. It works out really good for us. The nice thing I like about the Starlink case
has room for everything and keeps it nice and secure and really does a nice job
of that. It is a tad bulky. It works out really good. I get it stored underneath.
Kind of a place for everything, everything in its place. Gotta go get the weather station.
Just can't leave it rolling down the road like this. Oh, a little bit of sun this morning peaking
up and a lot of dew on the roof. This is where my weather station goes in a nice
tote. Kind of travels that way. This is my Starlink that I refiberglassed.
So that looks kind of, that looks good. I can put that up on the roof. That's my third option.
All right, water sewer. Disconnect this. My storage area here, which I really like.
Next is water. Just undoing all the hose gear. My pressure regulator, which is really good.
Good to have. Put this underneath. That goes there. Always good to have a place for everything.
Everything in its place. That way you know where everything is.
And you also know if you're missing something. A lot of moving pieces in this lifestyle.
The final stages of getting hooked up and on the road. Slides are in. Everything is detached.
Now it's time to attach Voyager to Orion. Sandra normally does the connecting,
and I'll do the directing. One of the few times that she actually will listen to me,
most of the time. All right, so then I will use this to raise it, get it to the right height.
Make sure to bring it in nice and easy. I like to make sure that she's close to the pins.
Come this side a little bit. Yeah. Lower this. Get it level with the truck. All right, that was good.
Lower these some more. Let Voyager feel the weight of Orion. Now it's time for me to connect.
Turn air. And here's the supply right there. Camera. The pin is in. And we've been sitting
for nearly three weeks. It's going to take a little while to air it up. There we go.
So we do a light check. And Sandra tries to fool me sometimes. And that's my signal.
Pass the test. Now it's time for the tug test. And we don't want to see anything move back there.
All right. Well, hi everyone. Welcome to the channel. So we are on the road heading to Kansas
for the National HDT Rally. Yeah. We're going to get there almost, what, five days early. Yep. Just
so we can get set up and then meet up with some friends. And actually some friends of the channel
are stopping by to say hi. So we'll be able to spend some time with everybody and get a little
R&R this week because I'm exhausted. Too much adulting last week. Being responsible. Oh man,
I can barely move my hands because all that cleaning. Get there a week early and have fun.
And then we're back to working again. Well, not really working. We're going to do some
presentations. Yeah. Well, I've already got them all done. Oh, they're done. Oh, nice.
That's what I was working on. Score. Okay. We want you guys to come along with us
on this trip to get up to Kansas. That's all this is going to be about. Yeah. We don't think so.
That's the plan. Just getting up there. And what is it like to actually travel
with us on the road? Something like that. I don't know. We'll make something up.
So there's several. Man, they're all spread out there at the. Yeah, they really are. Yeah,
because there it is, the Collin Street Bakery and Whataburger. I thought Whataburger and
Collin Street were right next to each other. I thought so too. It says no truck parking.
So are we a truck or are we an RV? Well, we're an RV. Yeah, we are. So it's intent.
They don't want. Oh, there's a Russell Stovers. I wonder if they're open.
Interesting where we end up parking for these quick little pit stops. Yeah. Now, normally
for lunch, because it's about lunchtime, we would eat at a rest area in the truck,
but today's special. It is very special. And it's not because we're stopping in Whataburger.
That would make it extra special. It would, but we are stopping here to meet up with one of the
friends of the channel. Yeah. So she reached out to us on Facebook and we're gonna meet up with
her in just a little bit. Quick stops. We've got these steps, these accordion stairs that we pull
out of the compartment, attach them, and that way they're adjustable and we can adjust these in.
Or this, if we've got a little bit more room. One of the things that we do as we travel
during the day, and sometimes I do this once, sometimes I do it several times a day,
depends on if we're in an agricultural area and we get a lot of bugs, but I clean the windshield.
Always nicer to see outside a clean windshield. And Sondra enjoys it from the standpoint of being
able to take some nice pictures through a clean windshield. All right. I cannot get through here.
You can't get through here? Oh my. Plan B. It's a good thing you know how to back out.
Yeah, really. Did a lot of practice. Oh, this is easy. You've got this huge wide parking lot.
Oh, I know. I think you wanted to go through the gauntlet over there. All those RVs just waiting
to go on a fun adventure. Oh, yeah. We have a camper. I remember those days. Oh, yeah. Those
are big compared to what we have. Oh, that is true. Now, there are concrete medians that are
not painted that you cannot see, but there's paint over there. So I'm going to head this way. Yeah,
these are almost invisible right here. Yeah, they are. Wow. Oh, look everybody. We just bought a
small RV. No, just kidding. No, don't put that in the video. I got the great thumbnail for it. He
downsized. It's downsizing for us.
Sorry, everyone. We're making fun of everyone.
So you can go straight on that frontage road if you want. Oh, I can. I'll actually go straight
across. Well, it's very unusual for us to stop and eat at a restaurant on travel day,
and today we stopped at the Collins Street Bakery, and yes, we bought a fruit cake,
which they are famous for since 19, since 18 something, and we bought a few other goodies.
That bag full. Just a few. But the reason why we stopped here is we wanted to stop and see
one of the friends of the channel, and this must be a very, very special person. But for me to skip
Whataburger when it's so close, that has to be someone special. It does, and that someone special
was Miss Ruth, and we had a very delightful visit with her, and good lunch. Good lunch,
good company, and now we're heading on. Exit 286A. This is so pretty. I love going through downtown.
And actually Atlanta is neat too. Yes, exactly. Because you're going right through the middle.
Yeah, a tour around Dallas. I feel special. Why do you feel special? Because we're taking a tour
through Dallas, and it's free. Well, I like free. I think they've added a flyover. I think they have
two. One layer. That Mustang, you got that power, use it. Don't you pull out in front of us. He's
using his camera, obviously, because he thinks things are further apart than they really are.
Yes, wow. So our stop at the Oklahoma rest area, the welcome center, and we're, yeah, we're trying
out our desserts and snacks that we got from Collins Street Bakery, and it's good. So Sandra
got chocolate fudge cake. Chocolate pound cake. Oh, chocolate pound cake, excuse me. Pretty good.
Neat. I got some other stuff, but this is the first thing. Yep, so hey, sometimes we make a stop,
sometimes we take advantage of previous stops. Yeah. It's 7 15 in the evening. The sun has set,
but it's got a pretty glow to it. We are arriving at our destination,
and this is what, the third time we've been here? Stopped here third or fourth? I think so. I think
this is the third time that we've been here. It's funny, there are certain routes that we take, and
we end up at the same spots. Not much has changed. Not a whole lot. It's almost like a little carnival.
So are they coming or going? Oh, I think they're going. That, uh, it's deflating. The ship is sinking.
They're definitely going. That ship is sinking. Was that ship a sail? What's that expression?
Yeah, that ship has sailed. So I see some RVs over there, so it looks like we're good.
Oh, over there? Yeah. So more self-contained units on this side, which is nice. Oh, there's still people
running their generators sometimes. Yeah. Look at all these little bouncy places. My goodness, it's,
oh my goodness, the grandkids would have loved that. Oh yeah. Oh wow. Oh yeah, they would have
absolutely loved that. It's like the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. Well, our spot is taken
next to the pond. Yes. I feel like we're at Disney backstage. We're definitely not going
through that entrance. Oh, that's new. Yeah. Oh yeah. They want to definitely keep you out of there.
No utility hookups available. That's nice that they asked that. I'm sure it's a commonly asked
question. Yeah, pick a spot, any spot. Let's go this way right here. This one here? Yeah.
Why not? Why not? Oh, there's some more kiddy stuff there. All right, we're here. Home for the evening.
Yes. Uh-oh, security. All right, I called to make sure because I was like, it's a hybrid. I said,
I know it's a semi, but it's an RV. It is. So technically, my supervisor said you still have
Really? Yeah. All right, well, the security guard just came by. We've been here multiple times
before, but now they're saying we are a truck. We're a hybrid, and yes, he wants us in the truck
parking lot, which is probably about a quarter mile, half mile, maybe a mile down the road.
I cannot believe they just kicked us out of here for being a semi-truck. I know, I just,
I feel really rejected. This is, this isn't right. We've never had this happen in nine years of full
timing. We have never been rejected because we're a semi-truck. So I know this is going to be
sounding extreme, but I feel a little like, not violated, but ostracized. Yeah, I don't like it.
And he bets that, of course, if they've called, he won't have an answer to the question.
If they haven't called, he might say, are you really supposed to be over here on this side?
Yes, we were ostracized. We were told to come over here. Well, I'm not going to get on a
shuttle to go all the way over there. No way. All settled for the night. Gee, what's for dinner,
Ma? We're going to get bread and water. Yeah, yellow bread. Yellow bread, yeah. So this is
from that Collin Street Bakery, and it's bacon and cheese bread. Oh, that actually sounds pretty
good. Yeah, so I'm thinking, we normally don't do sandwiches at night for dinner, but I think
this might be good with the ham and cheese sandwich. All right, let's try it. Don't you
feel like kind of a cheater by having sandwiches at night? But it is late. I mean, it's like eight
o'clock. So, when you guys make a sandwich, leave your comment down in the bottom. Do you
hold your lunch meat, or do you just lay it down flat? Oh, please, don't tell me that you lay it
down flat. Well? Well, I mean, so the sandwich is good. The bread is soft, but I don't know if
I'm getting that overriding bacon and cheese flavor. Maybe a hint, but it's not a big
component of it. And the texture reminds me a lot of potato bread. Yes, yes, that's exactly right.
So, it's good. Yeah. Good morning. It is a good morning. It is. Better than last night.
Yeah. I wasn't sure how last night was gonna start. It didn't start well, but it ended well.
That's exactly right. Yeah. Yeah, so we got shunned over here. Oh, the shame. Yeah, that was
interesting. Never had that happen before. But, so we came over here and got the rig all dusty in
the dusty parking lot. Yeah. After you washed it and had it all nice and sparkly. Yeah. It still
looks clean. It's just got a little layer of dust on it. That's okay. Yeah, but the funny thing is,
is it was really quiet for this being the truck parking area. It was really quiet, and I think
it kind of dawned on me this morning that all the truckers were staying in the hotel and not here.
Yeah, we did not really expect that. So, it ended up pretty good. Yeah, it was really nice,
and we saved a lot of money too. Oh, that's right. Because we didn't go in there, because no way
I am walking all the way over there or taking a shuttle and having to wait on a shuttle.
So, we just stayed put. Yep. So, we're gonna head on out this morning, and we will be in Hutchinson,
Kansas this afternoon. Getting ready for the rally. Oh, yeah. Going through Oklahoma City
this morning. They have got a very unique attraction here. It's a museum. Museum of
osteology. Yeah, skeletons. Yeah, skeletons. So, make no bones about it, that's a great place to
visit. Oh, I knew I shouldn't have turned on the camera. Well, it's early Monday morning,
and fortunately there's not a lot of traffic. So, we're going to save a little bit of money
and stop here, get off of I-35, and then take a road that goes parallel with the U.S. highway,
so we don't have to pay the tolls on I-35 through Kansas.
And it's lunchtime, so we're gonna grab a bite to eat. Yeah, U.S. 177. We've stayed at this casino
before. Oh, yeah, I remember that. Okay, because we stayed in that back corner there. That's right,
the security came out. He says, okay, I think, you know, you'll be fine. You ready for lunch? Lunch.
I'm ready for dessert. Yeah, I bet you are. We are stopped here after lunch, and the reason is
because we've got a blade going backwards back down the road. I don't know whether he took a
or couldn't make it around that bend, but he was not going forward.
Oh, yeah, so he's blocking, so nobody will move over. He's coming up on Highway 166,
and according to Google, that's either closed and or under. So, we'll see if he turns. Let's see
what he does. Does he have the inside scoot? Yeah, and the other question is why is he going
down this road? Is it, like you said, to deliver, or is it to avoid the tolls like what we're doing?
I think they got the tolls taken care of. Well, apparently, you can go there, so that's not good.
Yeah. All right, so, oh, railroad tracks. We need to check to see if there's an emergency
so far. We've looked, and every single one of these has had that blue sign.
It doesn't have the blue sign.
Yeah, down below. Sure does. That's just so cool. Very cool. Those tracks haven't been used in a
while. No, but they still have the blue sign. Okay, what's he gonna do? Going straight, so are we?
You know, I have seen them in the past, and they didn't seem that floppy, but that was
having some flex to it. So, the old adage, if they can make it, we can.
I like being on the other side of that thing. Another emergency. Yeah, that was no humpy, so
nice. Oh, look, there's his buddy. There's the post. Now, is that coordinated?
Wow, that's pretty impressive, if they could coordinate their activities. Very impressive.
Begs the question, when you go through a light, and it's green, but you end in red, did you run
the light? No, that blade doesn't have a license plate number, so.
This is where we part ways, because we're gonna head that way. I was hoping to watch him turn.
Yeah, yeah, I wanted to see him go through that roundabout.
Maybe he knows a better way than we do. Maybe. That was pretty cool, though. That was really cool.
It goes straight through town, and then in 0.3 miles, we're going to turn left. Big curves. So,
this is why he avoided this. Yeah, there's no way he's making that. No, no, he is not. Oh,
my goodness. Good job. Where do we go? That way, 81. No, no, no, keep turning, keep turning. Yeah,
no, I just had to. I should have told you to turn left. Yeah. Yeah, 81 north.
That was very close. That is a tight roundabout. Yes, it is, and that's,
I wonder if we're going to meet up with him. No, probably. We should have just. We should
have just followed him. Yeah. So, that is quicker going straight. It is quicker,
and then he didn't have to do the roundabout. Of course, that was fun.
Wow, okay. So, I wonder if they built this road right here, this pathway,
just for this reason, so he doesn't have to make a tight turn. Oh, yeah, because he is going straight.
Yes, look at that. And it's not paved. And that looks like that's a brand new
kind of road. Yeah, you're right, that isn't paved. Because the road comes to here,
and everyone makes a left. Yeah, and he's making a left, and he's taking a shortcut. So,
they must get a lot of windmill traffic. Oh, they must, because they built that for that reason.
Wow, interesting. So, he is taking that really wide. I would have thought that
the guy back there steering the trailer could have taken it a little wider.
Well, you're assuming they're steering it. I didn't see the wheels turn. I didn't either.
So, we're getting an escort now. Oversized mode.
Hey! What does that say? Really? Okay, so it looks like... Oh, yeah, there's a blade over there
lying down. There's a blade lying down? Yeah, there's a blade laying down over there in the
field. Oh, I don't see it. Oh, yeah, yeah, right over there to the right, next to the trees,
by that car. No, no, it's lying down. It's getting ready to be assembled.
It's kind of hard to see, obviously, because we're on the edge view of it. But, okay, that's cool.
Well, this... not to geek out, but this was really fun.
This was so cool, being able to watch this. Now, I want to go follow him and watch him build it.
Yeah, no. That'd be kind of neat to see them build it, but no, we're not going to do that this time.
Yeah, and they built this road just for that, the farm they're building. Yeah,
interesting, the infrastructure they've got to do. I still don't see that
lane you're talking about. It's over to the left by those buildings. I thought I saw it.
All right, back on the interstate. Had a nice little detour. Yeah, it was some entertainment.
Yeah, save some money. I thought that was fun. Yeah, that was cool. That was something different.
So, we're gonna go 235. All right, 235. Last leg, and I can't remember if this is an actual highway
or a two-lane road. Uh-oh, westbound 96 ramp closed. Didn't we have this problem years ago?
Yeah, I think we did. Oh, the girls are gonna freak out. Oh, you know they will. Really closed.
It supports, so hopefully we won't have to go 20 miles out of our way.
It is really nice that they have the sign, so now we want to turn left. Yes, very quick.
Well, we're not quite on 96 yet. Well, but that's the ramp for it. Okay, so they're just
fixing the overpass. Yeah, but the scary thing is that they were fixing the support structures
that was holding the overpass up. They were underneath it. Yeah,
it's not like they have earthquakes around here. That might have disturbed it. Yeah.
Okay, now we're gonna go on 96 west. Pizza Ranch, I'm sure we'll be going there. Oh, you know it.
It's one of those regional pizzas. They actually, their pizza's good, but especially their thin
crust. Hey there. The fried chicken is excellent. It's really good. It's really good. So we learned
our lesson. This is our, we just figured it out, that this is our eighth rally. Yes,
eighth time here. We're here in Hutchinson, Kansas,
and there's a nice feeling of being familiar with an area. Yes. Really nice. I mean, it's exciting
to go to a new area and explore it, but there's something comforting in knowing how to navigate
through an area, what to expect. Yeah, definitely when the roads verge, and when you need to take
a turn wide. Yeah, because the GPS is coming to the rally. They take you through a not great way
of town, no matter. You know, I think if we put a hundred foot rig length limit in here,
they'd still take us through that little jiggity-jag area. Yeah, I think so too. Well,
there's multiple ways to get to the fairgrounds, and we've learned that we like coming in through
the north entrance, which means we've got to turn here, and that is, this is a sharp
right turn, and it's only for us three lanes. So we've got lane here turning onto the two lanes,
and so sometimes there's a car. Yeah, but not right now. But not today, which is nice.
So that made it a lot easier for us. Yeah, and then we'll just turn into the fairgrounds up here
on the east side, and then it'll take us around, and then we will come in from the north. And they
said that the north gate is open, but it's not always open, so you got to check ahead of time.
So we're here one time, and this whole backfield was filled with farm equipment,
so they're having some sort of farm equipment expo, which is pretty cool. Yeah, that was pretty
neat to see all that. Yeah. It was all brand new, and this looks like this is all
for camping as well. Made it into Hutch, the fairgrounds RV park, and ready to start almost
two weeks here and enjoy the HDT rally once we get all set up and hooked up and
get all the slides out. Well, we went over this one little bump.
I don't know why my clothes are the ones that always fall down. It's time for me to reorganize
the closet anyhow.
Something I never thought I'd see Sondra do, and using an iPad to take a picture.
I've never used an Apple Prodigy before.
To forget
that it leaves you feeling down, I'm filled with some regrets. All this drink of the memories,
call them good old days. All those sweet in the moments.
