We are so happy to arrive back to the Spanish house we are renovating (Jo is staying for weeks on end!) after our brief time here in February. We get on to one or two small jobs and then our plan is to paint the back of the house white because it will really cool down the bedrooms for summer.

Spanish house renovation Life in Spain Moving to Spain
This video is sponsored by Wives. Is that the last one? Yes. Hooray!
So here we are at last. Finally. The sky is blue, it's a lovely temperature. What was it?
It's in the low 20s, late teens early 20s. Yeah. So it's just absolutely perfect. It is perfect.
We are very tired because we left our house at half past three
two days ago. Had another early morning today. And that's not in the afternoon. No.
Yes. Time for a sit down without a steering wheel in front of you and a nice cold drink from the
fridge once it's cooled down because we were... Yeah. Or the Fuente. We can go to the Fuente.
Okay. Anyway, let's go inside now and have a look how we left the house when we left in February.
You're going to see a strange sight as we go in. And look at that. What on earth is that?
What is that? Where has it come from? And what are we going to do with it?
I'm going to make you wait to find out. Take it to the teeth. Oh my goodness. It's not another
one of those, is it? You want to chuck it out and I want to keep it. Yes. That's a bit more of a
reasonable thing to have in your house, even if it is in the middle of the lounge. We left in February
after we had such a lovely time with our eldest son and his fiance. We left in a mad rush. So all
this is still here because after we did the amazing job that we did that cost that we showed you in
our video. We? We. We. Hang on. I don't think there's an I in we. We? I did that this evening.
We were doing other things. Oh, we. We was the gopher. Who?
I was the gopher. So yes, you were the great creator of the lovely floorboards and the roof.
But darling, you know, you couldn't have done it without me. I'm going to take a minute or two now
to give you some really useful advice. Now, we know that a lot of people watch our videos because
you're interested in buying a Spanish house yourself. Well, me and Rob recently found out
that when we bought our house for 39,000 euros, we could have saved around 500 pounds
if we'd used WISE to transfer our money. This is because WISE will always give you the mid-market
exchange rate. So we really missed out there. But the good news for you is that you don't have to.
So, for example, if you buy a property for around 50,000 pounds, if you use WISE to transfer your
money, you can save around a thousand pounds using WISE versus your bank. And obviously,
the more you transfer, the more you'll save. For large-scale transfers, WISE have a dedicated team
to make sure your transfer is smooth and secure. And with the app, you can track your transfer's
progress every step of the way. Amazingly, up to 74% of transfers are instant. This information
about WISE is correct at the time of recording this video. If you click on the link in the
description, you can get a free currency transfer of up to 1,000 pounds or a free WISE personal
card. You couldn't have done it without me. That's absolutely true. You couldn't. Anyway,
so let's turn around now. So all that stuff then, that was things that were in the loft or things
that we had to very carefully protect from the massive load of dust that we knew there would be.
We were here in January. We had a lovely time, but four frantic days, and then February,
where we were just filming. And then now, here we are again, and we just have not had time to do,
well, we did some cleaning, but then obviously it's got dusty then, because there's a lot of
dust in the house still. So what happened with this table, and also with, well, that part of
the table, I should say, that's only half of the table. So I went over to see my Spanish friend
who lives in the village, and because she said to me, Joe, or Jaime, as everyone calls me here,
Joe, I have got a table for sale. Would you like to see it? I shall insert a picture of the table
in a minute. So yes, she asked me if I wanted a table, and it was a lovely table. It was an old
table. It was, you know, the sort of, well, you don't know, I don't think you know the sort of
thing I like. Yes, of course you do. So it was sort of probably 40s, 50s, mid-century table,
lovely curved legs, and in really nice condition, but unfortunately when we measured it,
it wouldn't fit in our narrow kitchen dining, and so instead she asked me if we would like this one,
this table here. So we measured this, and it seemed as if it would fit, but we literally,
well Rob and our eldest son literally carried it over the morning before we left. So we have
no clue at this stage if it actually will fit. I mean, it is quite an old one. It is fairly tatty
because she wasn't selling that, she was giving it away. So at this point, we don't know if it
will fit. And this as well, she was actually selling this, and I just thought that would be
useful. 25 euros, why not? We need more storage. And then this, what is it? These are all our bags
here by the way. We've just brought them in, just emptied the car, and so we've got bags everywhere,
we've got food bags everywhere, we've got clean washing that we didn't have time to put away
before we left. And so this, I'll tell you about this in a few minutes, because at this point,
I don't know if my idea will work or not. And actually, okay, well look, you can see what it is.
What is it? It's a hi-fi unit. Oh my goodness, probably from the 1980s.
And actually, I was sort of expecting there was a flat top for it, because if it's just like this,
that will be a bit more awkward to do anything with. Anyway, more about this in a moment or two.
I thought I'd come outside and carry on recording because I noticed there was quite an annoying
little glint of light on the camera. So yes, so we had some time away from YouTube, that was our
plan, but also we were working in the UK. Rob was carrying on with his job and I was teaching
in a secondary school in Derbyshire and that went really well. I met some lovely colleagues,
just squinting into the sun, and I hope the chainsaw in the background, someone's jumping
some wood, that's not too loud. Yes, I met some lovely colleagues. Hello Hayley, it was great
meeting you and I said I'd say hi. And also lots of lovely students. It was a good school actually,
so that was a positive experience. But that does not compare at all with being here, which is the
most wonderful experience. And actually that is, it's very exciting for me because that was the
last time I'll be teaching in a classroom. I'm teaching online now, teaching Spanish online,
so that is just really wonderful and very exciting for me. Anyway, so our plans, we have got a lot of
plans, lots of projects that we want to do while we're here and we might not get them all done,
but we've certainly got a long list. So what we're going to do now is, Rob's just gone across the
village to say hello and have a bit of a chat with one of our neighbours. I'm just, I was going to
say one of our lovely neighbours, but I'm just aware I've probably said the word lovely about
20 times already so far since I've been filming. But I am quite a positive person so, yeah,
try and use a few synonyms for lovely. Anyway, so Rob's going to have a chat,
then we're going to have our dinner, have a rest from the driving and we will sit down and plan
which project we are going to start next. And probably we're going for a walk as well this
evening because, well I say probably, we are definitely going for a walk. What a lovely
evening it is here in Spain. Wow, can't wait. Anyway, so off for a walk and I'll carry on tomorrow.
So the great cleanup has started, which is excellent news, and now we're going to move
this hi-fi cupboard. Actually, one good thing, there is a lid for it, so that's good news,
but I didn't notice this before so that's making me think I am going to have to
paint it, although I'm not really sure how you paint laminate. So obviously this is hideous
looking and it's only a very temporary fix, but the problem is we are miles away from any nice
antique type shops and we've had the microwave on top of the washing machine for a while
and it is very inconvenient because there's only one plug socket. Hopefully, fairly soon,
we will get some nice old looking but new kitchen cupboards, but in the meantime,
although it looks ridiculous here, at least it's the right height, I didn't want to risk
putting the microwave on some flimsy wall brackets in case the wall wasn't strong enough.
So we're going to try and see now if this table is actually a table that we can use.
Is now a convenient time darling? Not really, no. Oh dear, well I better try and do it on my own
then, blimey. Okay, right then, so there's some other bits in the kitchen already,
well kitchen diner, whatever. Have we definitely got everything we need? I think so, I mean
obviously I didn't take it to bits so I don't really know, but it looks like we've got what
we should have. We'll soon find out because there's only eight bits to it. So there you go,
I just need to tighten the screws up down there and you have. So yeah, that looks quite good
really because it's a bit bigger but not massively bigger and there's plenty of room. Yeah and it's
a nice height. For six people it is a nice height. Great, that means I can go back to sitting down
Yes. I think you might know the answer to that. Yes. It begins with N. It's the same. Definitely.
It's the same in English and Spanish. My Spanish isn't that good so I couldn't comment.
And so we have a decent table that potentially the whole family could sit around.
And everything looks lovely so brilliant. Okay that's one job done.
Do you mean one job done? The only job done. Well let's now move on to the next job.
Go on then. Okay. I have Spanish lessons to prepare and then to teach so by the time I go out
Rob's been working for several hours. Well I'm coming out now to help Rob.
Bringing him a drink and I'm going to do cutting in along the top of the
wall that's got stones in. I've got these three brushes that we've got on one of our big trips
from Leroy Merlin. These three, €4.99. That's quite good. Well it looks quite good. We'll see
what they're like when we start using them. I've only been out once today and that was just for a
quick look to see how Rob was getting on. When I went out earlier it was really sunny and it wasn't
windy and now it's not cold but the wind's got up which is not not brilliant but anyway it might
blow over. I'll go and see how he's getting on. Oh yeah and just in case you've, where is it,
I've got a label somewhere. So my trousers are inside out on purpose because this is my
painting clothes. He's actually done loads already. I brought you a drink. Oh very good.
Well that is wonderful. Yes yeah we need to get something to cover the air con units with
so then I can cover them in paint. Take this pipe off and my little helper can do all the
the bottom and around the windows and then we'll get the ladder out. Okay.
Right come on then. What do you mean come on? I'll go for lunch.
Oh well I'll only be in your way won't I? Well if it's lunch time then obviously
I can't let you eat your lunch on your own can I? Yes well you let me paint all the wall on my own.
Well you were doing other things weren't you? I'd rather not be doing this. Yeah come on then
where's the paint? Oh yes. Oh so at this point then how much paint have we used? So far I've
used one complete tub. One complete tub okay so one complete tub for this that and that and down
the side. Yes. And that was 46 euros so far. Good. I've still got the back of the garage to do. Right.
That entire wall. Yep. The top half of that wall. Yep. Okay so you've got to do cutting
in around the windows and it probably will need another coat. Isn't this lovely really?
What you mean as opposed to lying on a beach somewhere and having a waiter bring you a drink?
Well you could compare it with that or you could be in England sitting inside
listening to the noise of the traffic. Yeah I could be at work. When I say I could be at work I could be
getting paid to work. Well likewise. I'm very warm actually. You can hear the birds tweeting
you can look and see the mountains.
It's not smooth is it? With the roller it's like trying to roll a swiss cheese because
there's loads of little holes in the in the surface and it's a bit of a pain in the bum.
Like if I do that it doesn't it's not going to show is it but you can see all the little
textury bits on there that then you've then got to really push on with
to fill in and it's a pain. Still we'll get there.
Okay so you can see progress has been made and you might be wondering why
why is she wearing a woolly hat with a t-shirt? Well I don't think anyone will hear that darling
I'm too far away from the mic. Anyway the reason is I was sitting on the bottom of the ladder
and suddenly I got white splashes over my laptop because I was doing some work on
the bottom of the ladder and so I thought well I don't have to try washing all that
paint out of my hair later so I went to get a hat. This was the only one I could find so
I'm wearing a woolly hat. Anyway back on the ladder. We had some good news didn't we?
So right at the top there, you'll just be able to see it, is a little bit that you can't reach
on the ladder so there's only one thing for it. You had the idea of lying on the top of this roof
and so we texted the builder, well I texted the builder and we asked him if he could stand on the
Hola, puede bailar y saltar si quiere and that means you can dance and jump on it if you want
so that's really good news so that means Rob can reach that bit up there. Anyway
no time to lose, let's get on. So is that it for today? No. Is that it for a bit?
That's it till we move the ladders. Very good news, I went to the car to find my sunglasses
because it is super bright so sunglasses, that's a good news and I found a proper hat!
Yippee! And the last yoghurt in the fridge. That's the ladder, that's where Rob was just
standing and I was just sitting. It's feeling not very safe. It is completely safe, I wouldn't
go up there if it wasn't safe. I've fell off ladders before and it's now fun.
So move along a bit. Yep, move along a bit and that is what we've got left.
Is that? No, there's still some in that tub. Oh okay, that's good, that's good, that's good.
Talking to the camera for a minute while Rob's just having a bit of a break.
So basically I'm not sure we're going to finish this job. Oops, just kicked over a drink. I'm not
sure we're going to finish this job and to be honest at this point I don't particularly care
if we do or not because I mean I know I've been sitting on the ladder and that's not the best,
you know, that's quite boring stuff but Rob's been painting for several hours today
and we've got one more day tomorrow and then we've got to go quite a way
to have new tyres fitted on the car because the day after we're driving to the airport
and Rob's going home. He's going back to work. This might be a bit quiet because I've just
realised I left the mic on but look, that's the bottom of the ladder. That's where Rob's been
climbing up. I think we can safely say I've had enough now. You've had enough? Yes. Progress.
My pool sunglasses are spattered. They are, they are. There you go, they did their job.
What a great job you have done. Well we nearly did it. So near and yet so far to use a cliche
yeah and you're probably thinking oh my goodness there's only a little bit left why didn't they
just try and finish that? Yeah well I fly back to England later this afternoon and if I crack any of
those roof tiles or any ribs yeah well yeah it's just going to be we haven't got time to fix it so
it's just yeah that's right I mean that's the thing it's another one of those things we we
don't live here yet so we do what we can and um so sorry if sometimes we don't finish things
yeah but we've painted the garage yeah the garage is looking great it's just that little bit up
that it's just not worth the risk of getting up there no yeah it'll take 10 minutes but it'll
take four hours if I break any roof tiles and it's I haven't got four hours we haven't got time to
mess around so you know that we do things we do finish things eventually it maybe just takes a
little bit longer than people who live there all the time but that's just life isn't it that is
things do take longer than you expect them to yeah it's looking lovely so far and I think it's
really made a big difference and I've got work the day after tomorrow yeah so hope you enjoyed this
video we did actually manage to go for a walk not last night but the night before and so of course
we're going to show you that lovely walk
