Can we really cross the whole of France without stopping to buy diesel? 🇫🇷⛽
In this episode, we fill up with diesel on the Spanish side of the border and set ourselves a challenge: make it all the way across France without paying the shocking French fuel prices!!
With the fuel seeming to last a strangely long time, we take it nice and slow, trying to squeeze every last mile out of the tank while enjoying some of the beautiful scenery France has to offer.
But then there’s a problem…
Time is ticking on. Suddenly we realise we might have to make a choice! We've got work in the morning and all at once, our careful, fuel-saving journey turns into a race against the clock. 🚗💨
Will we make it to Calais without buying diesel? Will the fuel gauge finally hit empty? And, now, most importantly… will we make the Eurotunnel on time?
Come along for the journey, have another laugh, and find out!

Hello and welcome to Casa Blue Hills.
And isn't it isn't it blue look it's stopped raining. It is
absolutely gorgeous here today but we're not here today
for long because we're just about to set off on our journey back to the UK.
Today it's Sunday and our plan for today is
we are driving up to the border France and Spain.
Tomorrow we are setting off from this side of the border
and we're hoping to get to, what do we say?
Somewhere around there. Somewhere around there. Yeah and then we'll get up the next day.
On Tuesday. On Tuesday Eurotunnel back to the UK.
But what we're going to do when we drive across France
we're not going to go on the toll roads because driving
on roads that aren't toll roads will save us quite a lot of money.
But what we are going to do is tonight or tomorrow morning we're going to fill
up in Spain and we're going to see how far
we can get through France and what we're really
hoping is that we can get back to the UK without
paying the French fuel prices because they are
about how much more? About 30p a litre more. About 30p a litre more in
France than in Spain. Come with us on our journey
and see how we get on. So here we are then just outside
Hacca. We've had an okay night's sleep but the good news is
the price per litre was £1.68 for diesel. The car's saying
well we've only just set off it says it'll do 560 miles
and we've got just over 700 so we'll see if that changes.
Will we do it? When we do it? We don't know
because really. But we'll show you why we're doing it
when you see how much fuel is in France.
So this tunnel is the border. Oh it's in Spanish and French.
Yeah. It's a lot. Okay. There we go then. We are in France.
So what is the range it has at the moment then?
600. 600. Aha. There we go.
So 218. So actually I have a confession to make.
This is the second petrol station we've seen
since we crossed into France. Unfortunately
when we went past the first one I was writing a rather long WhatsApp message
and so I didn't see the petrol station coming.
So there we go then. That's the first first official one we've...
Well that's comparable because it was a supermarket. The other one wasn't.
Oh yeah. So can you remember how much that first garage was as we
just emerged? 225. 225 then. The first petrol station that we saw when we
crossed the border. 225 and we're comparing that with what
was it in Spain? 168. We're leaving that at 218.
Yeah so then just now then 218 and that's a comparable
price because that was a supermarket and we filled up at a supermarket in Spain.
So we're in a supermarket then. This is Monday and Rob is at his
favourite place. The cake counter. Turn it around so I can
Yes you see I prefer things that aren't chocolate.
What have we got? Oh yes. Egg custard.
Yep that could be the one then. They look nice don't they?
Oh yes lovely. Is that egg custard the same as that one?
Apple tarts. Oh yes. Happy birthday. How strange.
Oh look at that. What's this? Not that horrible thing. What's that?
What is this? Oh crumble look at that. Only thing is that's a big big wheel
isn't it? Yeah. That's like if you were having a
party or something. Not eating in the car on a road trip.
Okay come on then. No time to lose. I'm gonna see if I can find a coffee
somewhere. We are in Cozumel and we'll
check the prices at the petrol station which is just part of this supermarket.
Dearest husband. Yes I've got one slice of cake left
Oh no.
That is shocking. That must have been when I wasn't looking. Someone
crept into the car. Crept into the car and nicked it. Oh dear.
Because I'll turn me back for a minute. That's what it's like with cake.
Just so unpredictable isn't it? Yeah leave it out of the package.
Goodness. Anyway so let's have a look. We have got
930 to go to. Eurotunnel is that? Yeah. What's the range?
Well the range is quite good but I don't trust it. Okay.
Range is 780 miles. Oh wow that's amazing.
Yes. That is amazing. It is actually. I mean we are on a very flat
terrain at the moment and we had all that time coming down
out of the Pyrenees when we were just going downhill. We've done 140 miles now.
Since we've filled up. Oh okay 140 miles since we've filled up.
Sorry 780 miles. I must say we seem to be going quite slowly don't we?
Rarely have I seen a driver sit on the side of that thing.
We can just go very slowly. We don't really want do we?
Oh there we go. So we're now heading on to the motorway. So
this section of the motorway you don't have to pay any tolls to go
on. So that's good and hopefully we can get a bit of a move on now
because we've been behind some pretty slow vehicles
haven't we? So we're now heading up to Bordeaux.
That's true. Oh dear. So instead of doing 85.
60 miles an hour. That's how it is then. That's the trade-off.
That is the trade-off. I'm not buying any fuel in France.
Or hopefully not buying any. The weather has clearly changed.
Literally one you know just a few minutes ago
we had the lovely blue sky. Looks like we might be in for some rain.
I've had a look and we are thinking at the moment
that we will probably get to four hours 20 minutes around the edge of
Bordeaux. Across a river now. I should know what this river is
but I don't. So I shall have a look now and find a hotel
to get to. What's the rain saying right now then?
I mean I know you tell me that it's not really that accurate.
700. 755. It's weird. It doesn't seem to be going down at all does it?
Well we've done 200. What today? Today. Today?
611. 202 miles. Or over 600 miles. So yeah. Nice while it lasted.
Approximately five minutes of motorway.
Good morning. So oh dear. I'm feeling a little bit
stressed today. There we go. So stressed I forgot I needed a microphone.
Blimey. Because we've looked at Google Maps
and we've realized that it's going to take us
a minimum of 12 hours to get home. So it is
half nine and we haven't booked the Eurotunnel yet.
I need to be up bright and early at 8.15 tomorrow morning
because that's when I've got a lesson so that's when I'm starting work.
You're back at work tomorrow but not till the afternoon.
So today right now we need to go and that. That's okay we've got
400 mile range in 300 miles to go. I know but you were saying that's not
accurate. Well we'll find out. Okay so we've got to go as fast as is
legally possible plus we need to stop at a supermarket
to buy lunch. So quick let's go. We're still on the flat bit. We'll be on
the flat bit for the next five hours. Yeah until we get on the
train. Yeah so Eurotunnel says we're going to get
there in five hours. We're meant to get there
an hour before but if we've got time to do that
we just need to go whoosh pull up and get there.
Well you can be flexible can't you. Stop at a supermarket and then we
have to run round. No excuses we are running around that
supermarket. Yeah yeah I've heard that all before and
then you know we'd normally then start looking at stuff that's on
we'll find and get to the supermarket and there'll be a tat shop.
By tat shop darling do you mean Brockholms?
I don't like tat. What is tat? Usually walk around.
Sorry I don't use that phrase. People don't. People might have used that 10
years ago. They don't go to the tipping front of
Brockholms shop.
