Buying a car shouldn't feel like a game. Yet every day, buyers walk into dealerships focused on monthly payments, trade values, and financing while missing the one question that can expose hidden fees, dealer add-ons, protection packages, and thousands of dollars in extra costs.
In this video, Kevin Hunter reveals the single most powerful question consumers can ask before visiting a dealership:
"Can you provide me with a written out-the-door price?"
That simple request forces transparency and makes it much harder for dealerships to hide charges, inflate costs, or distract buyers with payment-focused sales tactics.
You'll learn: ✅ Why out-the-door pricing matters ✅ How hidden dealer fees are often disguised ✅ Why some dealerships refuse to provide written pricing ✅ How to compare multiple dealerships quickly ✅ Common add-ons that can cost thousands ✅ How to negotiate from a position of strength
If you're shopping for a new or used vehicle, this may be one of the most important car-buying lessons you'll ever learn.

The question dealerships fear the most. There is one question that can completely change the power
dynamic inside a dealership. One question. Not, what's your best price? Definitely not,
can you lower the payment? Not, how much can you give me for my trade? Not those questions.
Sales people hear those questions every single day. They're prepared for them. They practice
responses to them. In many cases, they've got entire scripts built around those questions.
But there is one question that often makes dealerships very uncomfortable
because it forces transparency. And transparency is the enemy of games. The question is this,
can you provide me with a written out-the-door price, everything included? That's it. Simple,
direct, reasonable. And yet you'd be amazed how many dealerships will do everything possible
to avoid answering that question. Why? Because the out-the-door price tells the real story.
The out-the-door price includes the vehicle price, taxes, registration fees, documentation fees,
dealer fees, accessories, protection packages, and everything else that will appear on the
final paperwork. In other words, it cuts through the sales pitch, it cuts through the monthly
payment discussion, it cuts through the distractions, and it forces everyone to
focus on the only number that truly matters, the total out-the-door cost.
Now watch what often happens when a buyer asks for an out-the-door price.
Suddenly the conversation changes. The salesperson says, we don't normally provide that,
or you need to come into the dealership first, or our manager has to approve that,
or my personal favorite, we can't calculate that until you're here.
Folks, that's nonsense. If they know the selling price and your zip code,
they can usually provide a very accurate out-the-door figure in a matter of minutes.
The real issue isn't that they can't. The issue is that some dealerships don't want to,
because once you have the written out-the-door price, it becomes much harder to play games.
Now think about it. One dealership quotes a vehicle at $35,000,
and another dealership quotes the same vehicle at $35,000. They sound identical on the surface,
but then you request the out-the-door numbers. Dealer A comes back with $38,200.
Dealer B comes back with $41,900. Suddenly you discover there was a $3,700 difference
hiding behind the surface price, and that difference is often where dealerships make
a tremendous amount of money. Protection packages, nitrogen-filled tires, VIN etching,
paint sealant, window tint, security systems, top protection, wheel protection, the list goes on
and on. Many of these products may be optional, but some dealerships present them as if they're
mandatory, and buyers don't discover the extra thousands until they're sitting in the finance
office after they've already invested hours into the process. That's exactly why the out-the-door
question matters. It shines a light into the dark corners of the deal. Now here's another reason
dealerships don't like this question. It makes comparison shopping incredibly easy. Imagine
contacting five dealerships. You send the exact same email. You ask for the exact same vehicle.
You request a written out-the-door price. Within an hour, you've got five offers sitting in your
inbox. Now you're comparing real numbers instead of sales presentations. You're comparing facts
instead of promises, and dealerships know that. And some stores would rather compete through
confusion than compete through pricing. That's why you'll often encounter resistance. Now let
me be clear. Not every dealership operates this way. There are honest dealerships. There are
transparent salespeople. There are stores that will gladly provide exactly what you asked for.
But when a dealership becomes defensive over a simple request for an out-the-door price,
pay attention here. That's information because transparent businesses generally don't fear
transparent questions. And here's something else buyers need to understand. The dealership that
refuses to provide an out-the-door price before you visit is often the same dealership that wants
to keep you focused on monthly payment instead of total cost. Why? Because payments can be
manipulated. Stretch the loan, add products, adjust interest rates, move numbers around,
and suddenly a terrible deal can look affordable. But the out-the-door price? That's a lot harder
to hide. That's why it remains one of the most powerful questions a consumer can ask.
So the next time you're shopping for a vehicle, don't start asking about payments.
Don't start with trade value. Don't start with financing. Start with this. Can you provide me
with a written out-the-door price including all fees, taxes, accessories, and dealer-installed
products? Then compare the numbers. Because numbers don't care about sales pitches. Numbers
don't care about pressure. Numbers tell the truth. Folks, every week we hear from buyers
who tell us the same thing. I wish I had called you before I signed. Because once the paperwork
is signed, your options become much more limited. The best time to save money is before you buy.
