Today I share my van life reality of traveling with a cat. Which means going to a quiet spot in backcountry to work to much needed van repair like vanishing my floor, fixing my door locks and rust on the van. #vanlife

AI GeneratedThe speaker spends a day in the backcountry attempting to tackle three maintenance projects on their van: varnishing the plywood floor, lubricating malfunctioning door locks, and sanding down rust. While the floor and locks were handled quickly, the rust removal proved to be a daunting, slow process, revealing more damage than initially expected.
All right I think it's time to stop being lazy and start working on a couple things inside the van.
There you go. Perfect spot. Awesome. Let's put the van right into the sun. Is it a good spot here
kitty? What do you think? Do your observation. I'm sure you're gonna like it. You're funny bubby.
Look at this beautiful spot guys. I mean some people left some trash obviously. It's always
the same thing every time we go in the backcountry unfortunately. So I'm not sure if I'm gonna sleep
here tonight but I'm not here to find like a place to necessarily sleep. I'm here to
work on the van. I have a lot of projects and I wanted the cat to be able to go outside so I don't
have to worry about her because I'm gonna be probably in and out of the van. So a lot of
projects today that I'm gonna start. We're not gonna be able to finish all of them but I want
to start them at least. So this is what we're gonna need for the project. So I don't know if you can
guess the project but we have three projects. Oh I only put two of the project tools there but
whatever. One of the projects is one of the big projects. It is I need to take care of
this beautiful rest. Yeah I have to do it but I don't want to do it.
Yesterday I sand just by hand a little little bit. I'm not even sure I have all the tools and
everything that I need. This is not gonna be a how-to video. Not at all. It's gonna be like a
not-to video probably. Don't do like me. I watch a couple video online. I call a couple of my
friends so I do have a mini mini mini understanding of what I'm gonna do. I just want to do the bottom
today. Hopefully do it today. Just to see how I feel and how good I am. I'm not good at painting.
I'm not patient at all for that but this is the project. One of the projects. The second project
will be to take care of those doors. I'm trying to get out of the sun a little bit.
This is better a little bit. I have two doors that doesn't work anymore so I have to change
my lock this summer. Probably gonna do it very soon but the driver side and especially the
driver side have a hard time to open it now. So that means I only have one door after that one
which is the back door. So I just want to put some little jiggeroo or whatever to
try to fix it. Hopefully it's gonna get a little bit better until I change the lock.
And the third project which is to varnish my floor. So this is the floor which is really in
bad shape right now. Let me try to make you see something. So this is my floor.
It's only a piece of plywood that I varnished. So I've did that because I like the look first of all.
It is nice but in the winter because I cannot varnish the floor in the winter because it's too
cold. The floor gets really bad and I thought just like you know last summer I may have varnished
only four or five times. So I think this summer I need to varnish like probably double that. So in
the winter I keep some varnish on the floor because I walk with my shoes because I don't have any
heater. So obviously it's cold and all that. So we need to do our one coat today and hopefully
it's looking good. If really the floor doesn't look good I might eventually put like an actual floor.
But yeah this is the plan for now to just varnish and see how it looks.
So three big projects for today. I don't want to do any of them. All right this is project number one
done. It was the easiest project. So I'm gonna let that dry and I think I'm gonna do the lock now.
Super easy too. It's probably the easiest project right now. The lock. I'm not sure if that's gonna
work. That's gonna make a difference but yeah and after that we're gonna do the rest.
So this is the product that I have like PL100. This is the only thing I have inside the van.
Don't really feel to purchase any other product because like I said I want to change the lock
this summer or next month probably. I just have to go online and get that delivered for where I am.
Yeah the problem is I don't have like the little straw. Do I really come with it?
So yeah it's not gonna be good but let's see if I can
sneak some inside
so it gets easier.
I don't think my project's gonna work. I wish I was a cat sometime.
Enjoy the sun. All right so I'm done with the lock. Leave them like this and I'm gonna do
the rest now. All right so this is what I'm gonna try to do. Like I said I'm not an expert. I'm just
sharing my journey with you. So I have 80 grit sandpaper that I'm gonna start with and I purchased
those ones. 180, 300, 20 and 800 grit. I'm gonna have a sand block 100 grit.
So this is what I'm gonna do. I have purchased this primer. So when everything's gonna be sand
and the rust will be removed I'm gonna put the primer. They say two coats of primer
and I'm gonna sand in between with the 800 and when that's gonna be already obviously
between before I'm gonna put some grease and wax remover with this so everything is clean. So we
don't have like any greasy finger and all that and I didn't even try. I hope that's the right color.
So this is what I got. It's not gonna be an expert thing. Right now I'm just gonna do the
bottom section right here. So the not so visible section and go from there see how good or bad
I am. Oh guys takes forever. I don't think I have the right sandpaper. I need maybe a 60 or 40 grit
or the center is just not powerful but I've been like working just on that section.
Just I don't know that much for the past half an hour and it's still not perfect. I'm gonna show
you. All right this is what I've done. So as you can tell I still have some little. I don't have
any hole on my van but I do have those kind of like starting hole that I have to take care of.
But every time I'm sanding a section more I find more. So I do have a very strong feeling that the
previous owner paint. I mean I know that they paint the bottom but I think they hide a lot
more rust than I thought. And my back's already hurting.
I really need to do it and I just I can't afford to have someone to to do it. You know it's so
expensive and all that. So it's gonna be a long slow process. Doing a tiny little section every
week maybe. I don't know. But I need better grit. I need to call my friend to give me a couple more
advice to a couple spots that I don't know what I'm gonna do with. But yeah this is not very
working very well. It's not a good day today. We have the floor we did okay. Even I look and I'm
I think I'm gonna have to maybe think about making an actual floor.
And yeah the door's gonna have to be changed.
And the cat's inside right now because well because the machine was thinking you know
scaring her a little bit. So yeah but I do have a lot of rust. Most people don't show their rust
on their van. Me I'm like let's go. Let's do a tour of my varsity. So this is the side door.
The side door I'm not 100% sure what I'm gonna do with them. I might change the entire door.
Why? Because I don't know if you can see but it's got like a big scratch all along here. This is the
owner and if I change my two side door I'm gonna fix the rust on the hinge and obviously all that
spot in here which is really common spot to have rust on the forward van. So I'm gonna remove all
of this. Remove that big scratch and I'm just gonna add of that tiny little scratch here left.
So that will fix like a big chunk of the van but I have to find like the doors which would be hard
to do. And the van is a little bit dirty too. Yeah maybe a hard time but obviously behind
each wheels I do have nice little chunk of rust. The van at one point was located in Alberta. That's
the only information that I have. And I knew that when I purchased the van I knew that I had some
rust. You know a couple little spots but I can tell that I purchased the van in September and
already after a couple months already the first couple months in the winter I realized that oh
a lot more rust. So I knew I'm pretty sure that they paint the bottom of the van
to kind of hide a little bit of the rust. I'm quite happy that underneath the van is really good.
So maybe I know in Quebec people usually do the spray the bottom of the whole entire
car against rust. It's an anti-rust product or whatever they call it. I know it's quite
popular in Quebec because we do have snow and we do put salt on the road. So I don't know if
the previous owner did that. The only thing I know and I found some paper hide inside the van
is was on Sears was a Sears truck. So I have a strong feeling in this van because there was a
roof by the way. First I think it was used to repair you know those guy to go to repair like
dishwasher or whatever that they people purchase at Sears. Because I found a bunch of like
belts and stuff like this inside tucked inside. So yeah that's the only thing and only information
I have and it only had one owner which is Sears. So yeah but way longer project
than I thought it would be. I knew my friend was like you're not gonna like it girl. I'm like I
know I know I'm not gonna like it but it has to be done. I didn't do it last summer because I was
still working inside the van. I'm still building a van and I was working 50 hours a week because
of Covid. I was a janitor so I worked more during that time. So I didn't have time to even think
about my rust like outside and try to fix that. But now I'm glad that I started at the beginning
of the summer that I realized how much work I'm gonna have to put. But I think I'm gonna pack it
up. I don't feel to work anymore. All right kitty let's go let's go let's go baby. We're leaving.
You don't want to leave? Hold on I have something for you. I knew you'd come for that.
All right guys I'm gonna let you with this because my battery is about to die.
So thank you for joining me. Yeah I guess we're gonna we're gonna try to fix the rust this summer
but yeah just not very very slowly a little bit at a time. Thank you for joining me. Don't forget
