there's another reason why i'm digging i've just loosened all this stuff up kind of dive bombed
it down because this rose bush was planted so close it had raised up the dirt over over the
years and so i have to dig all this stuff out to allow enough room for the decomposed granite right
and then see see this big old nasty root look at that there's one there here's another one
here's another one and and there's another one there's another one under here too
and here's another one that's why i have to dig all around there because see see this root here
had i not been digging and just thought oh yeah it's good enough over time those things grow
underneath your driveway and they'll start lifting the driveway up in fact years ago i
made a video series on how to repair a drive a brick driveway because all of these bricks
were tilted up at an angle the last row the last row of bricks along here were tilted up tilted up
tilted up all along here because there were some roots from this nasty old tree and from the
different plants some some could have been from the rose bush pushing underneath raising that up it
also allowed ants to get under there and there's all kinds of ant trails under there and i replaced
all that and i dug out the roots and dug it out further and replaced the bricks and all that that
was that was quite a few years ago but i didn't i didn't touch anything over here see that's why
that's why i'm taking my claw hammer i just boom boom boom boom boom all the way along here because
this is 25 years old you got to remember 25 year old stuff that's why i'm going to be doing that
all along here to find the roots they're coming from this tree cut the roots off and through here
and then along this edge that's going to be kind of bad but anything i missed there that could have
grown down lower up and then along trailing along the top could have raised could raise that up
could eventually raise this up again another five years from now i don't want that and because because
i'm at this point now doesn't it make sense for me to spend the time to get these out of here i got
i got my lob lobbing shears uh these big bad boys and these these things go really these
these things go really far see there and you want something with metal handles if you got
wood handles especially your wood handles are going to break and if you got wood handles that
means your your your your shear cutters are 15 20 years old or older and when you go to try to
bear down on one of the handles is going to break you got to get something like this one here and
then i just have some little some little tiny ones for for for the small the small little ones
but for these i can get them with that thing and then if i chances are along here i'm going to i'm
going to come across some big daddies that won't i won't be able to cut off with that and then i
get my saws all out here with a couple extension cords wood cutting blade and zip it zip them off
i've done that before many a time because when i get done i want this to be nice and level that
the the concrete strip and i want the uh any of the roots that are showing here cut back from here
and any big roots such as these to get out of here so that they don't damage up the paddy the i want
to call it a brick patio it's a brick driveway i don't want it to encroach into there and and
come up anymore and i'm going to spend my time and i'm going to do it right okay because that's
how i do things on all my videos most of my videos that's why i show i show step by step how
to do things and how to do things right as opposed to wrong yes it takes a little bit longer to do
things right as that's as opposed to doing them wrong or doing it halfway half ass if you want to
say um but man get in the position of just doing things right or ask yourself hey what how would
video joe go about this what would he do would he leave all these roots would he would he leave the
the mowing strip the concrete strips like that and if you're thinking well why not just take
them out well first off if i took all those out i'm going to have i'm going to have to decide what
to do on this whole thing because i'm not going to have one area of something and another rocks
over here because that's going to get messy too this this was here from before i i don't i don't
dislike it and because of our thoughts hey let's just put decomposed granite in this area
so it matches the rest of the front of the house so it matches this area that i'm redoing it'll
match up that area it'll match up this because i'm going to put decomposed grant there i'm going to
put decomposed granite over there wouldn't it be nice to put decomposed granite here and then off
off to the side there'll be rocks and there'll be nice rocks as you can see along the side
you see what i mean have a game plan and if you don't have a game plan when you first start that's
okay it'll start revealing itself every every place has different things uh to deal with and
would i would i have done this if it was a brand new house no i wouldn't put the the strip here
like that i wouldn't do that this is 25 years old i'm not you know if i rip it up then i'm gonna have
to break it all up then i'm gonna have to uh i don't have a truck then i have to get a truck
find somebody who's got a truck load that up take it to the dump do all that kind of stuff
if i was redoing this whole thing and and just just gravel or rocks river rocks or uh you know
something like that then uh yeah maybe but the game plan that i have i can leave these alone
granted yes i'm gonna have to i'm gonna have to work on a couple different ones but that's okay
it'll give the edging a place for the decomposed granite never to go into the rocks on the other
side don't think you're going to put a little a little uh landscaping little fence type thing or
or or you know something mickey mouse oh yeah i'm going to be real careful yeah look at it a year
and a half and that'll tell me how nice it looks because it's not going to look nice okay so that's
why i've decided to leave these uh concrete strips here okay so i just wanted to kind of point out
that's why i'm going the extra mile because it's 25 years old and i want to dig up and i'll find
other things along the way you know other roots and other other things it'll give me
it'll give me an idea of what i'm going to do what i'm going to plant here
uh so forth and so on okay all right back to work i go
