This thing has rotted away but I think we can save it for my cows!

AI GeneratedThe speaker demonstrates the repair and modification of a livestock head gate. The process involves removing heavily rusted and rotted steel bars using a grinder and Sawzall, replacing them with thicker, quarter-wall heavy bar steel, and welding the new components into place. The goal is to refurbish the frame and integrate a walkthrough head gate while salvaging parts for resale.
Tell you all the tasks at hand, we've got the head gate hanging up here.
We're going to replace this bar.
This one's all the way routed out, all the way across as you can see.
We're going to take it out, we're going to cut it there, cut it there, get that out.
We're going to cut it here, get that out, cut it here and there, get that out.
And then I got some new heavy bar over here.
Some pretty thick stuff, really.
Wrong piece.
It's some pretty thick stuff.
It's quarter wall stuff.
I'll put this on.
We'll get that on there.
That's what our goal is going to be for today.
We'll probably have to use the grinder and the Sawzall.
See if we can cut that weld off.
And then see if we can cut that weld off.
And that shouldn't be no problem.
Cut that off.
That one might have to be replaced too.
I don't know yet.
Cut that off and get that out of there.
Shouldn't be that big of a deal, but that's what we're going to go with first.
And then I got to turn it around because I got that one to do.
But that's pretty neat.
They welded a nipple there so that thing couldn't slide.
I'm going to go back about halfway and cut that one and cut it over here.
Slide that piece out.
And see what we can do with it.
This seems to be a nice little head gate.
I need to get me another small piece.
I should have looked while I was over at the farm.
I probably got one of them.
Smash the ends is what it looks like they've been doing.
I'll put it on that forklift to get it up where I don't have to bend over and lay on
the ground the whole time to work on it.
I'm going to cut these bolts off here.
Get them out.
And then we're going to cut this whole thing off.
I don't know if we're going to get to that today or not.
Once we cut all that off, I've got a regular head gate to go in it.
Here's a regular walkthrough head gate to go in it.
Where that one, they had to back up and come out the side, which ain't that big of a...
It ain't that good.
So basically, I bought it for the two side gates and the frame.
But I knew this frame was bad here.
But I figured I could fix it pretty easy.
So we're going to go ahead and see if we can get this cut out.
See what we can do with it.
We'll come back when I get a little longer, a little farther.
Uh-oh.
Might not be able to do nothing if we can't get in the truck.
See what's in the truck.
Man.
What?
All kinds of stuff in the truck.
Okay, y'all change of plans here.
That thing is welded there.
It's welded all the way across there.
Welded all the way around the back.
I don't think I'm getting it off.
So I got it cleaned out there.
Got it cut off.
Um, both sides and the center of it cut out.
I'm going to just butt weld it.
And if we need extra support, I can put a plate there on it.
A triangle plate like so.
Whatever.
Might have to leave room for that thing to swing.
But I don't think that's going to matter.
You can see how bad that was.
There's that one.
That one, that one, all the way around it up.
Sitting in the maneuver.
I mean, that's, that's what does it to these.
No problem.
I mean, it does it constantly.
So we're going to, uh, I cut these bolts off too.
Bolt heads on this side.
We're going to get this new piece, get it measured out and set it up there.
See if I can get the welder out here.
I don't really like welding inside the building.
I'd rather have fumes and all out here.
And if anything catches fire or any of that kind of stuff, it's out here.
It's not inside.
I ain't got to worry about it.
So, uh, we'll be good.
But I think I can get my welder out here.
I got 50 foot of lead from over there, but I got another 100 foot extension cord there.
So I think I can make it happen.
But, uh, we're going to see.
I'm gonna get a measurement on it.
I'm actually gonna measure that other side to make sure I didn't splay this thing out or anything.
And, uh, make sure this latch is in here.
Good.
Like this is the latch that holds everything together.
So I want to make sure it's back in there.
Good.
And it is the way it's sitting right now.
That's why I picked it up from that gate and not from the top.
I didn't want to put extra pressure on it.
So let's get a, uh, let's get a tape measure.
See what we can do here.
Everybody's wanting to see the welds now.
I ain't the best welder in the world and I ain't done with it, but here we go.
I've got that one pretty good.
I've got that one laid in there pretty good.
Um, I got to jack it up and get up underneath it.
Um, but it's in there.
It's, we're damn close.
So you see it there.
Got it all lined up.
Didn't cut it too long.
Didn't cut it too short.
Got it just about right.
I'm going to jack it up over my head where I can get up underneath it and weld up underneath it.
Well, the inside, I want to be standing in here to weld that backside.
No, just going to make it easier on me.
Yes, I can get down on the ground and weld it.
I get down on the ground and weld it underneath, but why?
I use this ladder to hold it up.
Keep it in.
Keep it somewhat in there where I wanted it.
Now that I got it, basically all this does is hold it this way.
Boards in here run from this angle to that angle.
They don't touch none of that stuff.
That stuff's underneath it.
So these, I might cut these off.
Get them out the way where I can put new boards in the bottom of it.
Once I put them boards in the bottom of it, I'm probably,
I might paint the bottom of this thing.
I don't know.
It'd be nice if I had some like undercoating or something.
Vehicle undercoating to spray it down like a rubber bed liner type stuff.
Try to keep the moisture and the manure from eating it up.
But this side's pretty good still.
That side's got a bad spot in it, but we're well on our way here to fixing it.
Believe this, I went over to the pastor and cut out a couple of pieces of metal.
I had some 20 foot long stuff.
I cut some metal just guessing at it and I was that far off.
It's pretty good for a guess.
I ain't figured out exactly what I'm going to do here yet.
I might end up cutting it there and cutting it up there
and try to sell this chute or this head gate.
But if you do that, I take this bracket out of play
and I kind of need that bracket for locking the door.
I mean, I guess I could weld another stob on there,
but it's going to be hard to pull all this stuff off is what I'm thinking.
I got to cut this bar out because this bar I don't need,
that bar I don't need, that bar I don't need.
Well, I need to get them out of there so the cows can walk through.
That other head gate's going to come from like here up to almost the top of that thing.
So basically all I'm going to be using is the squeeze and the till.
The tailgate, the rest of it, I'm redoing basically.
Now I'm doing the bottom here.
I'm going to do that crossbar next.
Then I'm going to do that other support in there
and then I got to figure out what I'm going to do here.
I could go down there and just sawzall all that off.
But if I do that, I'm going to leave rough edges everywhere I sawzall it,
which ain't going to be good for the cows running through there.
And then like here, I still got to come over here and sawzall all this off.
If I had my cutting torch, I mean, I got a cutting torch,
but I hate to put it together for this.
But I might.
See these things here, you can move that thing in and out,
squeeze it down tighter or shorter.
I guess that's if you got calves and stuff you want to run through there.
But that seemed to be short enough to me.
I mean, that's only 30 inches.
The whole thing was only like 25 inches.
So that's 12 inches, maybe 12 and a half inches.
I got my tape measure right here somewhere.
We can look at it.
Let's get the tape measure out.
What's the bottom of the width?
Everybody's going to want to know that.
So here we go.
I guess 12.
I wonder how far off that was.
That wasn't bad.
12 and a half is what it's set on.
But it can still be adjusted another eight inches.
No, seven and a half inches is what it can go in.
You can push this thing in seven and a half inches.
That's going to put it down to nothing.
But anyway, that's what we're working with.
I'm glad this one wasn't rotted out.
That would have been a bear replacing all that stuff in there.
But I'm going to slip my saws all in.
Probably up in here and cut that off.
Cut it back here and fix it too.
But I ain't doing it right now.
I got to get this other one welded in.
We're going to go up with the lift.
I left a little air gap so I get full pin.
I think that's what they call it.
There ain't no damn air gap over there.
That's going to be a half pin.
But as you can see it a little better.
The bottom of it's pretty good.
Thing's up there.
I'm six foot.
That's a foot and a half over my head.
10 inches over my head.
Anyway, here we go.
All right, y'all.
I got a strap holding it there.
Up there.
And I got a strap holding it here.
I ain't got it crazy tight.
It's just on there.
I'm going to slice it, slice it, slice it, slice it.
I'm worried about that bottom folding down.
But I don't think it can because it's held here.
And it's held over there.
And I got straps on it.
Then I'm going to slice it right up underneath that damn thing there.
Cut it there and see what we can do.
So that's how I held it together.
And I'm thinking I can sell this gate is why I'm doing this.
I'm going to cut it.
I got me a measurement up there.
Got me a mark.
That mark right there.
Right there somewhere.
It's 55 inches to there from here.
And I marked it on both sides.
So I should be able to come back and adjust my straps.
To wherever to get that at 55 inches.
And then I'll know how long the bar needs to be.
And I can measure the bar that I cut out of there.
So that's what I'm trying.
I'm going to cut the bottom first.
I'm going to layer and let it down.
I'm going to cut the top.
And that way I can probably handle that board.
I mean that that piece piece is going to be pretty heavy.
But I think if I cut the bottom first and then I cut the top.
I don't want to cut the top and it'd be leaning out over me
while I'm down there trying to cut the bottom.
So I'm going to cut the bottom first and we'll see what happens.
Okay y'all.
I got that.
That one put in.
We got to get this one put in.
That would be the bottom one down there.
That one was full of water.
It was holding water.
You see all that water on the ground.
I think I'm going to drill a hole.
Well that wouldn't help.
I think I'm going to cut a hole in the bottom of that pipe there.
That water can run out so it won't freeze in there.
The water gets in there and freezes and busts.
You'll have a problem.
I mean this thing's going to sit outside its whole life.
I don't know where the hole was.
There was a lot of stuff welded on there.
And it's going to make it hard for me welding.
That's going to try to steam off while I'm welding.
So I got to figure all that out.
But got that in.
The reason I stopped there number one is that door stop is going to get me.
Number two, I need this door stop which is there.
It's a one inch piece of steel.
That's going to be hard to find.
But maybe I can get that one off.
I don't know.
I ain't tried.
I ain't even looked at it.
But that's going to be a problem.
I need to get that onto this pipe here.
I need to get a measurement on this pipe.
I've been measuring this.
I measured that one and got the same thing.
It was a little crooked but I tried to match it.
It looked like it was about right.
Got it in there.
Got it plumbed up.
Got it squared off.
It don't look crooked.
Usually when you do it, you'll see a dog leg in it if you got it crooked.
But I'm pretty sure I got it right.
I'm going to get this other one cut and see if I can get it in there.
And then we'll be on our way here.
That strap did help.
I got another strap on the other side holding.
Keep it from twisting down too bad.
But I'll come back with you here in a few.
Hey y'all, I got the lock back in.
Got it in there.
Got it welded off.
Got my poles in the front.
The lock work.
But it's tight tight in there.
So we got it.
We got the bottom bar in.
We got both of these side bars in.
Did pretty good.
I think I'm going to call it for today.
Getting hot.
Still got to get in there and get that piece out.
Get it cut up.
Get a new piece welded in.
That board, that wood comes right out of there.
So I don't think it'll be that big of a deal.
I think we can just cut it and slide it.
And we'll be good.
I did get the whole headgate off.
It's sitting there.
I'm going to put it on Marketplace.
Try to get rid of it.
Make a few dollars off it.
Or not make.
But recover a few dollars off of it.
And then I need to find a piece of metal for over there.
And get the rest of this little bit of stuff going.
And we'll be good to go.
Y'all give us a thumbs up for filming.
