I don't have any cool weather to tell you about I tell you that it is hot We have a little bit of a sea breeze You can see by the arrows kind of impacting you slightly if you are right on the sand Otherwise you can tell it is going to be a warm and we don't even have too much in the way of cloud cover So it will warm up quickly today temperatures already in the 70s out in Ontario at 73 71 in Burbank It's 70 downtown same for Santa Monica and Long Beach Palm Springs. It's 90 degrees right now That's where it's gonna be particularly hot. We have those extreme heat warnings there for the heat risk really quite high So you want to be mindful of what you're doing outside? You want to limit those physical activities that you have planned outdoors for sure on days like these 116 Possibly there in the low desert 106 in the high desert areas upper 80s up into the mountains where a lot of people don't have Air-conditioning up in Big Bear and Crestline Lake Arrowhead. So you really want to limit those activities again It's American if you can't 94 for downtown LA today Well above average and around 80 for the coastal communities with some humid conditions as well. It's gonna be on Santa Monica and Laurel We're gonna get eyes on that in just a moment, but on the way the 10 freeway conveniently right underneath us Take a look at that. Now that's gonna be through downtown Los Angeles those taillights moving away from us That's gonna be the westbound 10 as we're passing the 110 It's gonna be the usual traffic pattern moving along very well here But you're gonna be hitting the brakes slow and go through mid city. Give yourself that normal time You know what? I'm gonna take that back. It looks actually pretty good all of your neck today. You're hitting the brakes Where's that? That's gonna be just past Arlington. That's gonna be a good drive indeed eastbound wide open moving Well, we'll talk to you about that breaking news shortly sending it back to y'all in the studio Thank you, Stu happening today The preliminary hearing for singer David will enter day three with prosecutors expected to dig deeper in Forensic evidence a lot of interest in this case Mario Ramirez is live at the criminal courts building in downtown LA and he has more Good morning. Yeah, that's right. Good morning Today's testimony will give us an even closer look into the investigation of this gruesome murder case against the pop singer He's accused of killing 14 year old Celeste Rivas Hernandez and yesterday. We heard from a crime lab analyst who? talked about how Investigators found at least 11 air freshener scattered throughout that Tesla that was registered to the singer including in the front trunk where Celeste remains Decomposing remains were found back in September and it was that testimony that caught the attention of public observers Listen to what they had to say afterwards his first image of like 12 or 15 air fresheners That he had thrown in the trunk to try to cover up the decomposing body It's even disturbing to imagine him driving around trying to use that Tesla with that going on in the trunk The crime lab specialists also testified the vehicle had the stench of a decomposing body along with maggots and flies inside the front trunk And she also documented suspected blood stains inside the Tesla using a special chemical that makes traces of possible blood glow a Second LAPD crime lab scientists later Testified about the search of Burke's Hollywood Hills garage where investigators found multiple Suspected blood stains on rubber floor mats on a tarp and beneath the blue inflatable children's pool saying the pool appeared to have several cuts It smelled freshly laundered and contained a roll-up dryer sheet Meanwhile attorneys representing Celeste's family say so far the prosecution's evidence has remained largely intact under cross-examination here at this point the D the defense attorneys really haven't been able to poke a hole in any of the Prosecutions evidence that they put into place then a criminologist took the stand and testified that blood stains were found on the lower compartment trunk of David's Tesla and that they tested positive for Celeste's DNA Now prosecutors also presented what they believe was a financial motive in the alleged killing and Interscope Records executive testified Burke's Suda Stood to make up to 19 million dollars under his record deal Which was canceled after Celeste's body was found and prosecutors argued if she had gone public with allegations of their relationship It would have ended his career So today that preliminary hearing process continues we're expecting to hear more about the DNA evidence that was collected and I just talked to a Few of the public that are trying to get in to get one of those seats to the court's lottery system one woman She's in town. She's a sort of a traveling nurse and she has a family of attorneys So she wants to be inside the courtroom this morning to get a close look for herself for now We'll send it back to you in the studio My investigators spent a lot of time talking about how they found the blood inside of the Tesla as well as the home What exactly was that process? Yeah, that was a detailed testimony that we heard and one of the most interesting parts one of the crime lab specialists Talking about how they use a special chemical called blue star and even if there's a tiny trace of blood present it reacts with the iron and it Glows in bright blue under low light. So we heard a Testimony that the crime lab specialists said they took that DNA that was found inside the vehicle and they matched it with Celeste DNA today We're expecting to learn more about the blood and the DNA testing that was done from the blood found inside the home as well inside the garage and there's been no indication as far as if David had any kind of help if anyone was involved aside from him in this case Well, that's something that the defense may try to prove and it'll be interesting to see when this trial starts If it does if the judge does find probable cause here enough evidence to move forward how that plays out I was talking to a former federal prosecutor Nima Romani earlier this week And he said one of the questions he has is who inside David's inner circle will testify Maybe one of his close friends or someone in his entourage who will speak out and talk about you know More about what was happening. So it'll be interesting so far. We haven't heard any of that We've only heard from law enforcement investigators handling the case David's financial advisor So more to come on that but it definitely will be interesting to see how that questions. Yeah All right. We'll keep an eye on how things unfold there in court today Mario. Thank you Meantime another chilling case involving social media stardom and major felony charges will play out in a different in downtown LA courthouse today All right So influencer Gabby Gonzalez her attorney father Francisco Gonzalez and her ex-boyfriend are due to be arraigned Today the trio is accused of trying to hire a hitman on in on the dark web back in 2021 To kill singer Jack Avery the father of Gonzalez his daughter Avery a former member of the musical group Why don't we was not hurt though? Investigators say the hitman was actually an undercover FBI agent The defendants face 25 years to life in prison if convicted. All right, 706. Let's go over to Stu now He's got some breaking news in West Hollywood another water main break Stu Well, it might be it might not be but I can tell you something broke under the under the roadway and it is flooded You can see the dirt and debris right there. This is going to be in the West Hollywood area right at Santa Monica It is between Laurel. Actually, let's just do the big ones. It's Crescent Heights and Fairfax They actually have the eastbound lanes closed down right now. You can see the water already shut off You did see some deputies in that shot now the Department of Water and Power down there The fire department was down there as well. They usually show up for water main breaks. They're the first ones That's probably gonna be well, it's not it's eight I was gonna say it's sevens from LA County, but it's eight So they are literally just down the roadway from this as far as the road itself They also have some DWP trucks right here blocking that transition road If you drive this you'll know what I'm talking about This is that road that the kind of sweeping transition that takes you over to Laurel Canyon or Fairfax right there They've got some trucks and they are probably the ones that's probably where the valve is to shut the water off right now, though It's just happened. There may be a little bit of flooding down there on that in some of those businesses Is this like the Sunset one? Is it related? This is one of those questions that we're gonna find out from the ground reporters and a little bit later on But right now the water is off. The road is definitely closed and repairs Yeah, they're probably gonna have to start those shortly. I'm still up in Skybox Do we have I think we have Brooke on the way out to the scene right now But as we're watching this and considering what happened in a different part of West Hollywood with that main water main break Disrupting things so much. You're wondering we've had so many stretches of of warm days like extremely hot days You're wondering if that could have anything to do with it I know that the the pipes obviously are, you know, 75 100 years old here. That doesn't help matters Yeah Just you know just from the backseat of a helicopter. I have no no real super knowledge I'm just a guy in the back of the helicopter Maybe and this is a big maybe maybe it is just the pressure because they did shut off that main line So now they're probably putting extra stress on smaller lines. Maybe that's a possibility what's going on down there? But definitely this one broke. It looks like it's right here by this sidewalk. You can actually see that cover all that dirt That's what we learned about all coming up from that from that main being broken some businesses right there in the corner as well But the water definitely off DWP definitely here on scene. They must have been closed by oh and the gas company Wonder if there's something else going on here all as well But right now portion of us Santa Monica definitely going to be closed That's going to be eastbound lanes crews are ready here. The water is off but repairs. That's probably going to be the same deal again It's gonna take some time. You see how far away that was from the water the other water main break We are probably I can't say exactly but we're several miles away. Let me try to do the camera move So that's gonna be Santa Monica. I'm gonna go over to the bus Depot. That'll give you an idea where that is So that's quite a distance. Okay, that's pretty far. Yeah, so that's so that's the yeah, that's where it was flooded But again, it's one of those ones, you know those pipes who knows maybe it was a pressure problem Maybe it is just another coincidence or another aging infrastructure. Something broke out here in the West Hollywood It's probably a combination of all those things But yeah I was reading about how extreme weather can cause Water mains to break because it increases the pressure on the system and then the ground shifts and the temperature Can play a factor so, you know just what I just read about it. So who knows we'll find out more as time goes on Thank you, Stu So let's get to that massive sinkhole that opened up on Sunset Boulevard caused by last week's ruptured water main yeah, let's go to Gigi right now to talk a little bit about how things are going and There's been a little bit of a snag here in what they're trying to do That's right a Roxanne Jen by my calculations the maps were looking at we're about 1.1 miles from Laurel in Santa Monica where that new break or leak has developed We're on Sunset Boulevard where it meets Holloway on the south side and Horn on the north side And this is where last night at about 830 workers saw water Pooling in an area that they had just finished covering with dirt with asphalt It was almost ready to go. They had to stop the work We believe that to break the asphalt and you're looking live where those orange barriers are There is now another hole there. That is where the water was spotted yesterday And as of 1030 the department 1030 last night Obviously the Department of Water and Power telling us they were looking into finding the source of that water They do believe it is some kind of a leak near the section of pipe that was replaced And of course, we're talking about one week ago today when that 116 year old section Failed sending millions of gallons of water down the street here in West Hollywood That section has now been replaced. The street was almost ready The work was moving ahead and I think we have some video from Sky Fox We had Sky Fox above it early this morning just to get a better idea. We did not see any active water They do have pumps in the hole. They do have a pump truck We saw someone working with an industrial type wet vac earlier not far from where that leak was seen Now is this going to delay the reopening of sunset? Keep in mind. This is not only a great inconvenience to all the folks who live in this West Hollywood neighborhood But the businesses being affected the businesses that have had to close Because the roads are closed now. The goal was to reopen the street by the end of the day tomorrow Yesterday the DWP said that was a Tentative everything is going perfectly goal. But now we have hit a snag We are awaiting a morning update from the DWP We have reached out to them obviously on what the situation is here in on Sunset Boulevard And of course on the situation developing on Laurel and Santa Monica where Stu Mandel is We'll have much more on that for you. Now another big development this morning involving Saudi Arabia yesterday the president indicated that there would be a a sharing of Technology to allow the Saudis to pursue civilian nuclear technology Somewhat controversial the president is defending it though saying this morning that this involves the Saudis joining the Abraham Accords This is a big step. This essentially would normalize relations between Saudi Arabia and And Israel which is not going to go over too. Well with Iran if in fact this happens But this is yeah, this is also a complicated issue when it comes to nuclear enrichment for potentially Making a bomb, right? Yeah, I mean gents there are certainly critics that that say that now with the White House counters Is that this is just civilian technology doesn't involve the enrichment necessary to make? To make nuclear weapons for instance But there are fears that this could trigger kind of a nuclear arms race in the Middle East and and during the Biden Administration the difference in the approach and demeanor regarding the Saudis Yeah, listen, you know the Saudis have been you know, kind of a difficult customer in some regard a Roxy But as you know, the president has really embraced their leader There have been you know stronger business ties established between the two countries But nevertheless that comes with a great deal of controversy also, you know, the issue is what we're friends with them now But who's to say, you know years from now how this is gonna play out and what our relationship might be with them in the future Congress would have to approve any of this Well, yeah, seemingly so as far as the nuclear program is concerned I think we're going to learn more about that during today's a White House briefing But you know to your point about about kind of the shifting sands of the Middle East Absolutely, I mean you never know where things are going to stand a year from now. Yeah, let's talk about the weather conditions today Of course, you know based on what we have been feeling the last several days In fact, the large part of this month of July has been hot. It is going to continue to be hot In fact, maybe even hotter as that big dome of high pressure which moved a little bit Its position was over the Texas Panhandle now moving just slightly closer to us here over SoCal And that's going to give us some slightly warmer conditions a little bit of humidity as well as some instability 10% chance for some showers over the mountains and deserts But this dangerous heat wave will continue this big ridge of high pressure keeping us away from any storms really in the Pacific We're gonna look for some high surf so if you are headed to the beach just to remember the strong rip currents there as well as Just remember to limit your outdoor activities under these weather conditions You can cause a lot of heat stress on our bodies when we talk about these very high temperatures. Also the surf heights reinforced by that Storm Fausto in the East Pacific by the way Speaking of tropical systems wanted to point out tropical storm Bertha the second named Storm in the Atlantic hurricane season it is now moving towards, Texas It didn't move in crossover New Orleans is about 145 miles now west southwest of New Orleans winds have weakened to about 45 miles per hour We have a slew of advisories here including the extreme heat warning for some of our inland areas out towards the IE in the deserts And then that heat advisory for upper 80s and even some 90s here closer to the coast or at least coastal valleys So very hot conditions will continue 116 expected in India today That's where that extreme heat warning is in place with that heat risk quite high to extreme 83 in Inglewood just a quick look at our temperature trend here in Crestline up at the mountains Not very many people have air conditioning It's gonna be the 90s through Saturday and Sunday too And then we'll get some noticeable relief in the temperatures down to the upper 80s on Monday Let's go back to Stu now get another look at our commute and the breaking news situation down in West Hollywood another another break Hey Yeah, another water main break for sure skybox traffic to us by my home So gonna do a little breaking news that is the water main break in the West Hollywood area not the one we've been thinking about This is gonna be on Santa Monica, Santa Monica Boulevard. The lease is only gonna be the eastbound lanes right now They're shut down basically from Crescent Heights all the way over to Fairfax If that's your drive definitely give yourself a little extra time or find a way around it Probably a block or two over if you're gonna get around it just fine. It's not too bad going into the airport area They're LAX the the traffic's pretty good. We do have the extreme heat though And those alerts will continue as well into the weekend We've got heat and humidity to contend with and some warm nights. So we're just not Recovering during the overnight hours with some cooling so that's why we have these extreme heat alerts in place We really want you to stay heat safe 80s 90s and triple digits will continue especially the farther inland you go. It'll be in the one teens I would say by early next week Monday Tuesday. It's gonna be a little less hot It'll still be hot But I think you will notice that it won't be quite as bad or as oppressive But the majority of the month of July we have had these very hot days Only red boxes and today will not be any different really with that 94. We're expecting for downtown That's well above the normal of 83 our sunset time this evening at 801 Here are the other highs we're expecting or actually these are the feels like temperatures right now It feels like 96 in Palm Springs. It feels like 76 in Golden Hills still not too bad Maybe you can get that walk-in before it really gets warm later this morning and then overnight look at this tomorrow morning at 2 a.m It's still pretty warm. That's why those ACs are running even during the overnight hours Here are the highs today plenty of those triple digits 104 in South Carina 106 in Woodland Hills So that 99 in Corona 116 possible in Palm Springs later today. So breaking this morning We are learning about another possible water main break in West Hollywood Happened about a couple of miles away from the the main water main break that we saw happen it last week in West Hollywood It's kept a stew in Sky Fox with a check on this. You see some major pooling on the sidewalk there Definitely the water is off the government of water and power here on seeing the gas company here as well You know, let's let's talk about what's going on So the gas company you can see one of their trucks right there their workers were out there with specialized tools And you can see that yellow spray paint on the sidewalk and on the roadway I'm pretty sure what they're doing there is they're mapping out their lines So when they start digging up that roadway They don't accidentally nick or break a gas line while they're doing repairs on the waterline now the Department of Water and Power They just arrived out here. They've actually brought a truck with asphalt. So I don't think they're planning on digging a giant hole This is not going to be like the same thing We saw at sunset and a little bit of a digger tool right there some other specialized trucks I venture to say that's probably going to be helped to clear out some of that water when they start digging open that hole The water definitely remain definitely broke right here near the sidewalk a lot of dirt debris out there on the sidewalk itself Possibly some flooding on some of the businesses right there But right now Santa Monica Boulevard the westbound lanes not affected Maybe a little bit of slowing as people drive by but as far as the eastbound lanes go Those are definitely going to be closed They're stopping you right there at Crescent Heights, and you're not allowed to make your way over to Fairfax But right now there's more of a Brooke Let's get this water out of the way start figuring out that hole and start doing those repairs ladies. You're showing this I just keep thinking about what a different scene. It was last week where we had that water just Gushing down the street. It was like a river right a very very different situation this time around Different situation for sure probably a much smaller pipe out here this waterline I think I'm guessing I mean it could be but I'm guessing that it's not going to be a 36 inch line underneath the roadway there It might just be a line that like a resident of in this case commercial line feeding these buildings right there So a smaller pipe indeed Department of Water and Power though. You know they're under the microscope They are close by but responding here so very quickly look at those trucks already Ready there these guys are coming to getting out those that's going to be spray that thing He's holding right there basically just going to hold the spray paint Can and they're going to probably mark out the roadway for their lines They're going to figure out where the water lines are those yellow lines that you see there That's going to be from the gas company the deputies out here We did see them make entry inside these two businesses probably just to make sure that there You know it there might be some water in there Just kind of check out what's going on, but in the end that roadway closed while the repairs are being made They are out here, but it also makes you wonder. It's so close together same city What's going on out here with our water lines for sure well? Yeah, there's no doubt the the piping is old and then this in the big water main break happened last week It's yes It's not even in the same general area about two miles away or so But you have to imagine that that would shift things in terms of the stress and the pressure that's put on these pipes And then in addition to that the demand from how how hot it's been these last few days Doesn't help matters Yeah, it was something that you guys can't taught me about and thank goodness for the chat GTP and Google Yeah, I guess the heat definitely does affect the roadway. I always think to myself It's seismic activity because we're out here in California, but apparently heat is part of that problem as well Department of water power I was kind of zooming in on I thought that was the device to hold this break And that is basically finding the pipes underneath the ground and you know we're learning again The blue means water yellow means gas and this this worker from the Department of water and power He's marking out where that line actually is under the roadway there where they're gonna start digging We'll we'll stay here Maybe if we'll check in and see what's going on But it definitely looks like most of that water was coming out of that access panel right there But again, we learned that we look I learned my lessons from guessing what watching that sunset deal Because where that water where the line breaks and where the water is coming out can be two different things all together All right now just figure out muddy mess. I know yeah, it's all mud But the response was quite quick again We think about what happened last time around last week where they were trying to figure out who is Responsible for what to be able to shut it off It wasn't just like oh a main switch And they could just quickly meanwhile right the water was gushing for about three hours before they figured out who was in charge But this one seems a lot more controlled and contained and the damage absolutely not even comparable to what was happening last week Still we'll keep an eye on it and see what kind of progress is being made there. It is on its way to Texas and it will continue to weaken but look at all the rain it is bringing that Texas coastline there winds at about 10 or rather 45 miles per hour and is moving west at 10 miles per hour We are also watching this storm system Hurricane Fausto in the East Pacific about a thousand miles now West southwest of the southern tip of Baja watching it because it has entered our swell window So it is generating these swells and waves up into SoCal So that is what's reinforcing the higher surf rolling in and also those strong rip currents in the water Watching Fausto also because it's gonna get pretty close to the Hawaiian Islands as we get into next week Monday So we'll keep you posted on that system in the meantime We do have these heat alerts in place We've got heat advisories all the areas shaded in orange for the possibility of heat related illnesses And then it gets greater as you get inland purple areas here or pink. That's where the extreme heat warnings are in effect Temperatures well into the triple digits so that greater risk or extreme risk for heat related illnesses there So you want to plan accordingly and limit your physical activity outdoors? We also have on top of that an air quality alert for a greater part of LA County so another reason to stay indoors because of the heat and the added Ozone or a smog if you will know the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke This is really important heat is the silent killer It is the number one leading cause of weather related deaths faint or dizziness excessive sweating That's pointing to heat exhaustion. You want to get inside and get some AC if you see someone that's not sweating outside Throbbing headache got red hot dry skin rapid But very strong pulse you want to call 9-1-1 this person is probably getting into that heat stroke category And that can be fatal you want to call for emergency help right away if you're headed to the beach 77 to 82 there on the sand surf Heights as I said up 3 to 6 feet Ventura County LA beaches South-facing beaches a little bit bigger getting up to even 5 to 7 foot sets LA Orange County 94 degrees I think Monday will be back down to the 80s still above average still hot But maybe not quite as hot 106 in the valleys in the ie we're gonna hang on to these heat alerts through at least Monday The mountains 88 that chance for some showers about a 10% Chance and then as we get to the high desert triple digits 106 there and of course hotter in the Coachella Valley 114 116 today getting up to 118 possible on Saturday, so stay heat sick I do some TV shut ups cuz these are cute.
