Coastal flooding hits parts of Newport Beach

In Newport Beach, we're along the Balboa Pier and I can tell you
we're actually having a little bit of a sprinkling right now.
You probably can't see it, but we can feel it.
But the big concern is that high tide that is coming
in around 11 o'clock, as Gigi just mentioned.
And you can see this massive sand berm out here.
That water is going to keep rising.
And the big concern is these low lying streets,
the ones that we've already seen be hit earlier this week.
Homes and businesses along the coast could be vulnerable
to flooding again today. Take a look. Let's go to this video from
Skyfox. You can see this is Newport Beach near Anchorage Way.
Skyfox capturing floodwaters
covering a street right next to rows of homes
and you see just how close the water is to
residential properties.
Another round of high tides expected today. More flooding in these
low-lying coastal neighborhoods and residents
and business owners say they've been more prepared
with each round of flooding.
I think everybody was really worried when it first started a couple
weeks ago when it was pretty bad
and then they keep on assuming like and preparing that it's
to get worse. And so as they're prepared, we're going to be better off.
I think we need to have a serious look at what we can do to maybe
change it or build something up
or put a seawall up or something higher.
I think that's the only solution really.
I think it's getting worse and worse.
And I want to show you a look at Balboa Island
from the water. We were on a boat
yesterday just before high tide.
And the National Weather Service warning that roads could be closed,
The property could see some water damage,
and shoreline erosion is also expected today.
Now, back out here live, another look at the water.
The coastal flood warning expires at 1 this afternoon,
and then the flood advisory takes over immediately after,
and that continues until 2 o'clock Friday.
So, again, the high tide, we'll be watching it this morning,
and we're even getting more precipitation out here,
more light rain that continues to fall here
on this part of the Orange County coastline.
In Newport Beach, on the Balboa Pier, we'll send it back to you.
All right, Mario, thank you.
A new study.
