I spent two days in Zermatt, day hiking to Matterhorn viewpoints and trying to spot the famous black-nosed sheep.
Hey there! I am currently in Zermatt, Switzerland.
Imagine you're in a fairy tale where dramatic alpine mountains rise behind
valleys dotted with sheeps. This isn't a storybook but the village
of Zermatt, Switzerland. And even if you've never been here you've
probably seen this mountain, the Matterhorn. At 4,478 meters
it's one of the most iconic peaks in the world
and it's where I'll be staying for the next 48 hours.
Hey there! I am currently in Zermatt, Switzerland
as you may be able to tell by the famous mountain Matterhorn next to me.
Right now it looks like this on top. You really cannot see anything
but I don't know hopefully the clouds will clear.
My hike today is the popular Five Lakes Trail which begins with a cable car ride.
Okay I am now headed to the Five Lakes Trail. To cut some hiking time I got the ticket to
take the cable car to Blauhert and I think from there it's a pretty easy hike to the Five Lakes.
Oh my god so I just exited the Blauhert station and over there there are a lot of black-nosed
sheep which is one thing I really wanted to see while in Zermatt.
Oh my god hello! Oh my god look at these two sleeping on top of each other.
They have melted into one sheep.
Hi there! Hello! The black-nosed sheep originates from this region and they're so beloved that
Zermatt's official mascot is a black-nosed sheep named Wooly.
They're not only extremely cute but also known to be very friendly and curious.
That was such a fun surprise to see the black-nosed sheep
but now I am on my way to the first lake. The trail is pretty easy and flat.
The fog has arrived. Now you cannot see anything. Now it has just passed and you can see the
mountain again. There is Matterhorn right there. We are very close to the lake. I'm currently waiting
for Matterhorn to show its head. It's been hiding in the clouds all day but I think it's going to
just peek out for a little bit very soon. Some sheep passing through Zermatt and everyone's
so happy. I later found out that during July and August there's a daily goat parade. Each morning
the herd grazes on pastures outside the village and every evening they return through the town
to their barn, a tradition that's been passed down for generations. Why are they here? They're
called black neck goats, native to the region with a distinct half black half white coat.
Most are well behaved though a few would try to go off course for a quick snack.
Now I can finally see Matterhorn even in Zermatt village. Ah so pretty. There is Matterhorn.
The next day I headed to the Gornergrat to Riffelberg trail. I just hiked up to the
viewing point. I think this is the highest place you can be to see the glacier. There's a glacier.
There's a glacier. There's a glacier. There's a glacier. There's a glacier. There's a glacier.
Glacier all around. Ah you were skiing. Oh wow.
Oh wow. Ah yes I see the lift. It's going up and down.
Oh yes that's why yesterday in Zermatt I see people with their
ski snowboard and I was like where are they going? The Matterhorn sits between Switzerland and Italy.
You can ski almost all year long at the Matterhorn because of its high altitude and glacier terrain.
There is Lake Riffelsee. So not too far away from Riffelsee lake there is a second lake
with a little bit less people.
I just walked to the Riffelberg station and there's some kind of performance going on right now.
Matterhorn in German means the meadow peak. A poetic name for a mountain that
rise sharply from green alpine pastures into a dramatic pyramid of rock and ice.
The Matterhorn was first summited over 150 years ago. Decades later the first winter ascent was
completed and in 2015 the record ascent was in less than two hours. The Matterhorn isn't just
a mountain. It's a story of human determination and maybe one day I'll add my own chapter
and see how the view transforms from the base of the mountain to its peak.
