AI GeneratedThe Cleveland Cavaliers are reportedly considering a trade for Royce O'Neal, potentially involving Dennis Schroeder. This move aims to improve the team's positional value and depth by adding a proven \"3 and D\" wing who is a close friend of Donovan Mitchell, helping the roster recover from the loss of key players.
Mario Hazonia to the Cavs, but more moves will be coming.
I can promise you this report reveals a huge Cavaliers trade update that we could be seeing
in the near future that completely benefits the Cleveland Cavaliers positional value and
their depth there that they are so desperately looking to improve after losing out on LeBron
James.
I am Matt Pelangi here at Cavs Digesting us so much for joining me today.
I hope everyone's having a great start to the week.
It is a Monday, so your week could be going better soon.
I want to dive straight into this report and not hold you guys any longer.
So, let's dive into it right now.
Per Jake Weinbach, the Cavaliers could discuss a trade for Royce O'Neal in a potential deal
involving Dennis Schroeder.
O'Neal, who was recently acquired by the Hornets in the Miles Bridges trade, is a close friend
of Donovan Mitchell and would provide Cleveland with another proven 3 and D wing.
I would love this trade.
I just want to say that.
I know we added Hazonia, but Hazonia, I made a mistake in my Hazonia video.
He's actually 6'8", 6'9", and can play the 3 or the 4, so I think that he is going to
be a Dean Wade and Larry Nance Jr. replacement.
Well, I think Royce O'Neal could be a pretty sure frontrunner to be the backup 3 if Max
Struess is not there anymore.
I also think that Malik Thomas has proven himself as being a legitimate backup point
guard to replace Schroeder.
I'm going to compare and contrast Schroeder and Royce O'Neal and why I think that this
would be beneficial for the Cavs.
Of course, if you think that the Cleveland Cavaliers don't need another small forward
or shooting guard, you might not like this trade as much.

Now, let's go back into it.
Based off what you know about the trade right now, I want to ask you guys, would you make
this deal?
Yes or no?
I'm going to talk about the stats, but make your predict, but make your opinion, drop
your opinion now in the comments, and then we'll talk about the stats.
Just give you a couple of seconds to do that.
Predictions made you probably comment.
Why are you coming to them?
You gave your reasoning why now let's start off by giving an introduction to the man Royce
O'Neal.
He played in Phoenix.
That's what I remember him for mostly.
I also remember him in Utah for some reason.
I think I had him in a 2K MyLeague once as well.
Royce O'Neal, as you saw it in the Jake Weinbach post, he is a 3 in D player that I think adds
onto the Cavs perfectly.
I think he fits right in.
Love Sam Merrill, but Royce O'Neal is a better pure player overall than Sam Merrill because
he's not just going to shoot.
This is a 40% three point shooter who can play perimeter defense very well.
He's standing at 6'6", so he can play shooting guard and small forward, and he plays both
of them very, very well.
Of course, he was acquired by the Hornets when the Hornets traded Miles Bridges to Phoenix,
so I think that they could be a potential buy out there or just a sign in trade, but
I think that trading Schroeder straight up would help you salary wise.
I'm pretty sure salary wise because Schroeder makes a lot of money like 15 mil, but it would
also help positional value.
The Cleveland Cavaliers could be aiming to maybe add on a different backup point guard
to replace Schroeder in this trade.
But I think Royce O'Neal could be your true backup three.
Maybe trading Truce along for somebody else.
I still think the Cavs could be eyeing some bigger splash deals, could be eyeing some
bigger things outside of Kuminga or could be adding Kuminga still.
I think Max Truce could be a part of a sign in trade for Kuminga.
So maybe the Cavs are just looking to add on more, even though again, Sam Merrill is
a player that we have a lot of respect for Cavaliers Nation.
I just think that Sam Merrill doesn't bring enough to the table when he's not hitting
shots.
He does hustle.
He tries to drive, but I just don't think he's that true backup shooting guard that
you want.
I think that he needs to play in that Kyle Corver type of role more where he comes in
the game and hopefully you get some shots.
If you get a couple of misses, you pull them out.
If you get a couple of makes, you kind of just keep them in, see how hot he can stay.
That's what he does.
O'Neal can give you the 30 minutes a game where he's just playing great defense, scoring
the ball at a high efficient level or at an efficient level with 40% from the three
point line.
And he also is a good defender.
Fouls two times a game, which means that he's willing to use his body a little bit.
Of course, a steal, but just a permanent defender overall.
Pairing that with five rebounds a game as well, 10 points, five rebounds is really,
really good.
I personally wanted him at the 2024 trade deadline.
I thought that he is just one of those guys that you could just plug in and play out to
any roster.
I think that Royce O'Neal would be very beneficial to the Cavs.
Now, on the flip side, in this trade, you would be losing Dennis Schroeder, who I've
talked very negative about for his performance against the New York Knicks.
I thought he was absolutely abysmal, but that does not mean that he is terrible for the
Cavs because he was decent in the Toronto series and he was decent for us in the regular
season.
As you see in the regular season, 10 points, five assists, 24 minutes, 40% from the field,
32% from three is not great, but five assists and 10 points is pretty solid for backup point
guard.
It's actually great for backup point guard.
But I think that a big positive to look at here is that the Cleveland Cavaliers are making
moves.
It seems like they want to make moves that they're missing out on LeBron.
I think that it could start here.
It could start with, hey, you know, they did the trade where they tried getting Lonzo for
a coro in a straight up swap.
I'm not sure.
Last time we did that, it didn't work.
Maybe we shouldn't do it this time, but I just think that Schroeder is a undersized
point guard who can't hit a three pointer.
I think that that does hurt against some of the top teams in the NBA, at least the Eastern
Conference, because he was, again, he was terrible against the Knicks.
But I think he was in the regular season.
I really did like the way he played for us.
I complimented his game.
I made videos on it.
I do really think that Schroeder is the backup point guard that the Cavs wanted.
A guy that can handle the ball, give him another ball handler, get a couple assists, get a
couple points, play some good quality minutes.
I just think that his lack of size is just not what the Cavs need, especially when he
can't really make a three pointer.
It's the same thing with Lonzo.
Lonzo was bigger, but he couldn't make a shot.
That's kind of the problem we have with Schroeder is that he just can't make threes.
He can slash decently.
He's just pretty inefficient.
40%, 32%, 52% true shooting.
It's just not what you want.
Again, I do not think that Schroeder is awful.
I do not think that just getting rid of Schroeder means that is the best thing ever.
I'm not sitting here telling you that Schroeder is awful.
I just think that there is better backup point guards.
And I think the biggest thing to note is that I think positional value, I think Malik Thomas
is going to bring more out of backup one, Tyrese Proctor.
They're both bigger guards and they can score on all three levels.
I think that those guys could secure that spot down.
The only problem with adding in Royce O'Neal for me is that now you can potentially miss
out on Jalen Tyson minutes because the Cavs could be kind of small forward heavy.
They really relaxed forwards last year.
I think in the playoffs, we could have seen an extra four.
Now that they lost Dean Wade and Keon Ellis, they're starting lineups looking a little
bit like Harden, Mitchell, Struess, Mobley, Jared Allen, but then your bench.
What's your bench now?
Hazonia, Schroeder, Merrill, Tyson, Tomlin, Bryant.
I think you just need another, I think you just need one guy that could just really be
a true shooting guard, small forward.
You can also start Royce O'Neal if you want, if you were to trade Max Struess.
But I think what the Cavs should do is get rid of Max Struess and assign and trade for
Kuminga and then put Royce O'Neal at the backup three, have Hazonia be like the backup four,
Thomas Bryant be the backup five, although they don't really like playing him, but they
should put him at the backup five, and then I would have Malik Thomas at the backup one
and Merrill at the backup two.
I think that's the best lineup you could potentially have for the Cavs.
I think that that is something that you could see in the near future because I personally
do like Royce O'Neal, but we'll see if they make this move.
I'm not sure how much, how valid the source is, but I think it could be good.
So now that you know the stats, would you make this deal?
You kind of got my opinion, the lineups for the Cavs.
Now that you know, does your mind change at all?
